Bob Sloan, a young helicopter repair and design technician for Atlanta, Georgia, based HeloTechnologies. Sloan has spent six years in the Navy working on choppers on aircraft carriers, and four years in the civilian world working for Helo Tech. Atlanta, Georgia. Oppertunity knocks and Sloan volunters for an assignment in Vietnam as a civilan tech rep. The money sounds good. He knows nothing about warfare, the jungle, or Vietnam, other than what he has seen on the TV news, but, he reasons, it makes no difference as he will be on a big safe base somewhere fixing helos and not involved in the Army way of life. On his first day in Vietnam the helicopter he is riding in is shot down over the A Shau Valley, known as The Arizona. He is the only survivor and has no idea how to survive or get out of the heavy combat zone. He is just starting to figure things out when he is captured by the Viet Cong.
Brad Morris, a Navy SEAL, buried the last members of his command. It's 2015 in Djibouti, a small country in West Africa on the Red Sea. Something has killed nine-tenths of the world's population and he has no idea what it is. Governments and society have vanished. After listening to the end of the world, Brad has had enough. He is going home. If anyone else is still alive, he feels it has to be his grandfather. He is a tough old man, a Vietnam Vet. Home is Jacksonville, Florida. Brad knows the 65-footer cannot make the voyage straight across the Pacific to the US; so he has to find another way. He decides to follow the coast of Asia up to the Bering Straits, cross over to Alaska and follow the coast south then cross the US to Florida. It turns out things aren't quite that easy. So begins the long journey home.
