Justice, Sustainability, and Security - Global Ethics for the 21st Century (Hardcover, New): E Heinze Justice, Sustainability, and Security - Global Ethics for the 21st Century (Hardcover, New)
E Heinze
R1,945 Discovery Miles 19 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this interdisciplinary volume, Heinze and a diverse group of senior scholars explore global ethics through sustainability, justice, and security. They address topics within these categories based on recent world events (BP oil spill, 'War on Terror', UN Climate Conference, for example) with an eye toward reconciling the interests of states and other global power-holders with those of individual human beings and global society as a whole.
Using a variety of techniques and approaches, including applied ethics, constructivist social science, normative political theory, and field research and narrative approaches, Justice, Sustainability, and Security not only enhances our knowledge of these issues, but it teases out their moral dimensions and offers prescriptions for how governments and global actors might craft their policies to better consider their effects on the global human condition. The volume thus seeks to illustrate the interplay between the 'theory' and 'practice' of global ethics.

Ethics, Authority, and War - Non-State Actors and the Just War Tradition (Hardcover): E Heinze, B. Steele Ethics, Authority, and War - Non-State Actors and the Just War Tradition (Hardcover)
E Heinze, B. Steele
R1,639 Discovery Miles 16 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In original essays written by both senior scholars as well as rising younger scholars in the field of international ethics, this volume addresses the ethics of war in an era when non-state actors are playing an increasingly prominent role in armed conflict. Central to this concern is the issue of whether, or under what conditions, non-state actors can be said to have the "authority" to participate in war. The contributors therefore explore and analyze the problems with, and possibilities for, incorporating non-state actors into the traditionally state-centric moral vocabulary about war--namely, the just war tradition.

Practices of Dialogue in the Roman Catholic Church - Aims and Obstacles, Lessons and Laments (Hardcover, Annotated edition):... Practices of Dialogue in the Roman Catholic Church - Aims and Obstacles, Lessons and Laments (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
Bradford E. Hinze

One of the principal buzzwords of the Second Vatican Council (1963-65), along with collegiality, co-responsibility, full participation, and aggiornamento, was dialogue. This is a history of how the practices of dialogue have actually worked or failed to work at every level of the church over the past forty years. Beginning at the most basic level, that of the parish, the book moves up the ecclesiastical ladder from parish councils, to diocesan synods, to the (Roman) synod of bishops. The book moves laterally as well to include ecumenical and interreligious dialogues. A chapter is devoted to the fractious Call to Action Conference, initiated by the U.S. bishops in 1976; another to the new inclusive style of drafting pastoral letters by the U.S. bishops - "The Challenge of Peace" (1983), "Economic Justice for All" (1986), and the never approved pastoral on women ("Partners in the Mystery of Redemption"). A further chapter is devoted to Cardinal Bernardin's Catholic Common Ground Initiative, which is still going on, though it was initially publicly attacked by four U.S. cardinals. Finally, there is a chapter on what was perhaps the most radical and far-reaching exercise of dialogue of all, namely, the dialogical and democratic processes by which women religious revised their constitutions. This is a cautionary tale, filled with thick description of advances and retreats. In a curious way, the book is a sequel to the multi-volume "History of the Second Vatican Council", edited by Giuseppe Alberigo and Joseph Komonchak If those volumes tell us what transpired at the council, Hinze's volume tells us what happened when the council fathers went home and all the good ideas of the council were either put into effect or left to gather dust in the dead-letter bin. Vatican Council II is an ongoing experiment, and "Practices of Dialogue" is a series of reports from the labs.

Behind every important development in Catholic doctrine and practice since the beginning of the modern period have been debates about the interpretation of Christianity's classic texts and traditions and their ideological and practical implications. Over the past century there have been breakthroughs in retrieving the origins of beliefs and practices, recovering the rich, myriad, and multifaceted literary forms, and recognizing the ways these venerable traditions have been received, applied, and negotiated in the lives of reading audiences with their contrasting worldviews. The essays in this volume by leading figures in Catholic theology suggest what might be called a "third naivete" that blends deeply contextual interpretations with a critical theological analysis of the roles of power and grace in church and society. The abilities and skills to grapple with basic issues in hermeneutics and critical theory remain necessary and fundamental for Catholic theology. At stake is nothing less than how the good news of God's salvation can be grasped and lived today. This volume provides a trustworthy map and compass for negotiating these debates and options. Contributors include: Sandra M. Schneiders, Francis Schussler Fiorenza, Robert J. Schreiter, John E. Thiel, Dominic Doyle, Fernando F. Segovia, Andrew Prevot, Ormond Rush, Judith Gruber, Susan Abraham, Anthony J. Godzieba, and Bradford E. Hinze.
