Dieser Buchtitel ist Teil des Digitalisierungsprojekts Springer Book Archives mit Publikationen, die seit den Anfangen des Verlags von 1842 erschienen sind. Der Verlag stellt mit diesem Archiv Quellen fur die historische wie auch die disziplingeschichtliche Forschung zur Verfugung, die jeweils im historischen Kontext betrachtet werden mussen. Dieser Titel erschien in der Zeit vor 1945 und wird daher in seiner zeittypischen politisch-ideologischen Ausrichtung vom Verlag nicht beworben.

Nicht allein dem Plan des Gesamtwerkes verdanken die zwei Bande, die der pathologischen Anatomie des Auges gewidmet sein sollen und deren erster hiermit zur Ausgabe gelangt, ihr Entstehen. Das Bediirfnis nach einer um- fassenden Darstellung der histologischen Veranderungen bei den Erkrankungen aller Teile des Auges war seit langem ein so fiihlbares gewesen, daB man ohne Ubertreibung sagen dad, jeder wissenschaftlich und klinisch interessierte Fach- kollege empfand den Mangel aufs lebhafteste, sobald er sich in ein die ein- schlagigen Fragen betreffendes oder auch nur beriihrendes Problem zu ver- tiefen wiinschte. Wohl besaBen wir in deutscher Sprache zwei ausgezeichnete kurzgefaBte Darstellungen der speziellen pathologischen Anatomie und Histo- logie des Auges aus der Hand von R. GREEFF und S. GINSBERG; aber erstlich lag ihre Entstehung mehr als 25 Jahre zuriick, und zweitens wollten beide Werke nicht mehr als den Praktiker in das Studium einfiihrende Lehrbiicher sein. Eine erschopfende handbuchartige Darstellung des Gegenstandes zu geben, lag wohl von jeher auBerhalb der Moglichkeit fiir einen Einzelnen, selbst zur Zeit, als das pathologisch-anatomische Studium des Auges sich in seiner Bliite- zeit befand und manche der hervorragendsten Vertreter des Faches sich wissen- schaftlich fast ausschlieBlich in jener Richtung betatigten. Selbst JULIUS v. MICHEL - urn eine der markantesten Erscheinungen aus jener anatomischen Ara zu nennen - hat den sein ganzes Leben mit sich getragenen Plan, eine groBe pathologische Anatomie des Auges zu schreiben, nicht durchzufiihren vermocht.
