Teaching Literature Using Dialogic Literary Argumentation (Paperback): Matt Seymour, Theresa Thanos, George E. Newell, David... Teaching Literature Using Dialogic Literary Argumentation (Paperback)
Matt Seymour, Theresa Thanos, George E. Newell, David Bloome
R1,231 Discovery Miles 12 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Introducing a new framework for teaching and learning literature in secondary schools, this book presents Dialogic Literary Argumentation as an inquiry-based approach to engage students in communicating and exploring ideas about literature. As a process of discovery, Dialogic Literary Argumentation facilitates conversation-"arguing-to-learn"-as a method to support students' diverse perspectives and engagement with one another in order to develop individual and collective understandings of literature and their place in the world. Covering both the theoretical foundation and application of this method, this book demonstrates how to apply Dialogic Literary Argumentation to teach literature in a way that foregrounds dialogue, learning through inquiry, diverse views, listening to others, and engagement with our communities. Ideal for preservice teachers in literacy methods courses and practicing teachers, it features real-world cases, discussions of the principles presented, resource lists, and conversation starters for professional learning communities, professional development, and teacher education.

Russel K. Durst, George E. Newell, James D. Marshall
R4,221 Discovery Miles 42 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Taking as a starting point the most enduring insights to emerge from acclaimed researcher Arthur Applebee's scholarship, this volume brings together leading experts to fully examine his work for its explanatory power and its potential to shape current and future research agendas. Focused on the ways in which students learn, schools teach, and assessors evaluate the forms and uses of language needed to flourish and grow, Applebee's work reconceptualized how educators view language development and use in relation to schooling. Organized around three themes-Considering Curriculum as Conversation; Writing as a Tool for Learning; Talking it Out: Class Discussion and Literary Understanding-the 14 fascinating chapters in this book extend and challenge Applebee's insights.

Repo Stories - Life Lessons in Repossessions (Paperback): Douglas E. Newell Repo Stories - Life Lessons in Repossessions (Paperback)
Douglas E. Newell
R319 Discovery Miles 3 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Doug's talent as a storyteller is unmistakable. The tales he recounts herein are engaging, sometimes sobering, and often very funny. Sparing himself no scrutiny in looking back on his career as a repossession agent, he holds the reader's attention and gives advice by example (even when the example illustrates what not to do). Doug's conclusions about self-defense, drawn from the lessons learned during his career, are surprisingly insightful. While editing his stories, I found myself both entertained and informed. These sensations are, for someone in my line of work, both rarities - and they are rarer still when they occur simultaneously. This book shares some of Doug's experiences and the lessons he learned as a martial artist and a young man during his eight years in the world of repossessions. During those eight years he would repossess hundreds of items, ranging from cars, trucks, motorcycles, airplanes, farm equipment, limousines, and hearses to home appliances and other things long since forgotten. Ninety-nine percent of the time things would go well. The stories in this book encompass the small one percent of the time when things turned bad. Most of the stories in this book have some application to self-defense, as teaching life lessons on self-defense is part of the purpose of the book. Others he's included because he hopes you will find them entertaining.

America's Secret Island (Paperback): Peter E. Newell America's Secret Island (Paperback)
Peter E. Newell
R243 Discovery Miles 2 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

I reveal the existence of a US-UK-NATO submarine base on Andros, established in 1963. I describe in detail all the facilities on Andros, used mainly by the Americans, although British personnel, including submarines, visit the base, not generally known or reported in Great Britain. Mention is made of Paradise Island, adjacent to Nassau, where entertainment is provided for personnel stationed in Andros. Paradise Island was developed by the mafia, with assistance from former President Nixon. The next chapter details SOSUS, the underwater anti-submarine detection system, connected, in the Atlantic Ocean, to West Wales, the Azores, Bermuda and Andros. Like the base on Andros, SOSUS is rarely, if ever, reported in the British media. Who knows of its base in West Wales? Very few.

The Killers in Gilbourne County features Mitchell Granger, a man with a passion for growing his general contracting business and hunting whitetail deer in north central Oklahoma. The outset of the new hunting season brings anticipation of stirring adventures, success afield, and comradeship with his hunting partner, Craig Huntsman. However, stumbling over a dead body in the woods puts an eerie and perilous spin on ordeals yet to come. Granger's newfound romance and the near death of his hunting partner spur the protagonist to uncover the truth and put things right. As the details unfold, protecting the lives of the people he loves, and exposing countywide corruption, proves more dangerous than the beast in the woods trying to kill him.

A Stitch in Time - The Needlework of Aging Women in Antebellum America (Paperback): Aimee E. Newell A Stitch in Time - The Needlework of Aging Women in Antebellum America (Paperback)
Aimee E. Newell
R714 Discovery Miles 7 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing from 167 examples of decorative needlework - primarily samplers and quilts from 114 collections across the United States - made by individual women aged forty years and over between 1820 and 1860, this exquisitely illustrated book explores how women experienced social and cultural change in antebellum America. The book is filled with individual examples, stories, and over eighty fine color photographs that illuminate the role that samplers and needlework played in the culture of the time. For example, in October 1852, Amy Fiske (1785 - 1859) of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, stitched a sampler. But she was not a schoolgirl making a sampler to learn her letters. Instead, as she explained, “The above is what I have taken from my sampler that I wrought when I was nine years old. It was w[rough]t on fine cloth [and] it tattered to pieces. My age at this time is 66 years.” Situated at the intersection of women's history, material culture study, and the history of aging, this book brings together objects, diaries, letters, portraits, and prescriptive literature to consider how middle-class American women experienced the aging process. Chapters explore the physical and mental effects of “old age” on antebellum women and their needlework, technological developments related to needlework during the antebellum period and the tensions that arose from the increased mechanization of textile production, and how gift needlework functioned among friends and family members. Far from being solely decorative ornaments or functional household textiles, these samplers and quilts served their own ends. They offered aging women a means of coping, of sharing and of expressing themselves. These “threads of time” provide a valuable and revealing source for the lives of mature antebellum women.
