In their early years, the Texas Rangers protected the settlers from Mexicans and Indians along the river. As time passed, the Rangers became lawmen, protecting Texas after the Civil War. Now, times are changing and the Rangers must change with them. These men are known as the new breed. In this fourth book in the Ranger Winds Series by author E. Richard Womack, the Rangers still mourn the death of Ranger Captain Laughlin McFarland, a legend and the fastest gun in Texas. Captain Jones has been selected to replace McFarland, Dusty McFarland and Boots Law have become Ranger Captains in Uvalde and Abilene respectively, and Ryder McCoy has been assigned to establish a new station in Fort Worth. Newfangled inventions, such as one of the first horseless carriages in Texas, keep the men on their toes-as do a gang of highwaymen and the Pinkerton detective sent to catch them. Although new forensics and techniques have made detection procedures more efficient and simple, there's still plenty to keep the Rangers busy as murder, robberies, rustling, and general mayhem still plague the West as they rush headlong into the twentieth century.
Significant advances in our knowledge of genetics were made during
the twentieth century but in the most recent decades, genetic
research has dramatically increased its impact throughout society.
Genetic issues are now playing a large role in health and public
policy, and new knowledge in this field will continue to have
significant implications for individuals and society. Written for
the non-majors human genetics course, Human Genetics, 3E will
increase the genetics knowledge of students who are learning about
human genetics for the first time. This thorough revision of the
best-selling Human Genome,2E includes entirely new chapters on
forensics, stem cell biology, bioinformatics, and societal/ethical
issues associated with the field. New special features boxes make
connections between human genetics and human health and disease.
Carefully crafted pedagogy includes chapter-opening case studies
that set the stage for each chapter; concept statements
interspersed throughout the chapter that keep first-time students
focused on key concepts; and end-of-chapter questions and critical
thinking activities. This new edition will contribute to creating a
genetically literate student population that understands basic
biological research, understands elements of the personal and
health implications of genetics, and participates effectively in
public policy issues involving genetic information . Full, 4-color illustration program enhances and reinforces key concepts and themes Uniform organization of chapters includes interest boxes that focus on human health and disease, chapter-opening case studies, and concept statements to engage non-specialist readers
The definitive collection of North Carolina's odd, wacky, and most offbeat people, places, and things, for North Carolina residents and anyone else who enjoys local humor and trivia with a twist.
In this sequel to "Ride the Ranger Winds, " the Rangers face death as they try to keep order in an increasingly lawless Texas. Three of the Rangers-Boots, Jerry Jack and JoJo-arrive in Laredo to settle a range war. A rancher with precious water is fencing off his land, fueling a war that is about to get bloody. But there are also other problems to face - some more welcome than others. Three Fingers and his Indian followers are burning barns, killing babies, and stealing horses; there are settlers with grudges seeking revenge; and Boots is falling in love with Jane Wyatt, a newspaper writer. The Rangers also face constant temptations to give up their way of life. It will be up to Captain Laughlin, a legendary gunslinger, to figure out whether one of his men may be contributing to the violent disorder. Step into nineteenth-century Texas and join the Rangers as they contend with marauding Indians, traitorous men, and beautiful women in "Ranger Winds: Ride On."
The book presents a unified treatment of integer programming and network models with topics ranging from exact and heuristic algorithms to network flows, traveling salesman tours, and traffic assignment problems. While the emphasis of the book is on models and applications, the most important methods and algorithms are described in detail and illustrated by numerical examples. The formulations and the discussion of a large variety of models provides insight into their structures that allows the user to better evaluate the solutions to the problems.
This handbook describes a range of hand tools and simple muscle-powered machinery appropriate to developing countries where abundant labour can offset the problems of limited funds or unreliable sources of energy for mechanization.
This handbook is a useful aid for anyone working to achieve more effective lubrication, better control of friction and wear, and a better understanding of the complex field of tribology. Developed in cooperation with the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers and containing contributions from 74 experts in the field, the Tribology Data Handbook covers properties of materials, lubricant viscosities, and design, friction and wear formulae.
Volume III extends this handbook series to cover new developments
and topics in tribology that have occurred during the past decade.
It includes in-depth discussions on revolutionary magnetic bearings
used in demanding applications in compressors, high-speed spindles,
and aerospace equipment. Extensive coverage is given to tribology
developments in office machines and in magnetic storage systems for
computers. Monitoring sensors are addressed in the first chapter,
followed by chapters on specific monitoring techniques for
automobiles, diesels, and rotating machines. One chapter is devoted
to procedures used for tracking the remaining life of lubricants.
Synthetic lubricants are discussed by outstanding specialists in
this rapidly developing field. Synthetics are increasingly
important in widely diverse areas, including compressors using the
new ozone-layer-friendly refrigerants and a variety of
extreme-temperature and environmentally-sensitive applications.
Water- and gas-lubricated bearings are given similar attention. The
contributors also develop a new, unified coverage for fatigue life
of ball and roller bearings; for design and application of porous
metal bearings; for self-contained lubrication, involving oil
rings, disks, and wicks; and for plastic bearings. Each of these
classes of bearings are used by the millions daily throughout
industry.
Contemporary scholars have made important substantive and theoretical contributions to understanding the ways in which power is exercised through gender and through sexuality. Drawing upon a number of theoretical frameworks, including feminism, post-modernism, masculinities and queer theory, researchers have challenged dichotomous, static, and biologically reductionist conceptualizations of gender and sexuality. They have documented the myriad ways in which sex, gender and sexualities are far more complex than previously assumed. However, despite these advances in research, the tendency in the literature has been to examine gender or sexuality. This volume proposes a corrective to that trend by offering a collection of research based articles in which the authors examine the exercise of power at the intersection of gender and sexuality. The articles in this collection offer insights into some of the ways in which gender can be used to challenge the exercise of sexual power, as well as the ways that it can reify patriarchal, heteronormative sexual relations. Additionally, the articles advance the understanding of some of the institutionalized ways that sexual power might be used to challenge or reify gender relations. The articles in this volume have been written so that each is accessible to both students and senior scholars of gender and sexuality.
From barroom brawls to Main Street shootouts, Ride the Ranger Winds offers non-stop action of true to life Texas Rangers. From Captain Beasley to Laughlin McFarland and all the other Ranger Recruits, their one common denominator was their own personal integrity and straight forward approach to the dangerous life on the frontier. See how the author grasps the savagery of the times in the Ranger's raw dealings with murderers, rapists, cattle rustlers, outlaws and Indians. In an era with little, or no, political influence, the action is sometimes brutal and crude. Intertwined with the perils of the untamed west, romance is incorporated into the daily lives of the characters. Like mythical sailors with a girl in every port, the Rangers had their romantic interludes while on the trail of desperados. Follow Laughlin as he grapples with his life on the trail and his decision whether to marry Melissa and quit the Rangers, or continue his dangerous life on the Range.......Does he find an acceptable compromise?
F or as long as he can remember, Dusty McFarland has wanted to become a Texas Ranger, to follow in the footsteps of his father, Ranger Captain Laughlin McFarland. Now that he's turned eighteen, Dusty achieves that goal and, with his mother's blessings, is sworn in as a ranger. His father reminds him that his duties are to love the great state of Texas and to protect her with his life. Dusty understands the dangers and knows that each gunfight could be his last. From the moment Dusty receives his star, he and his father do their best to uphold the law by tracking criminals and bringing them to justice. Their adventures include finding Dusty's blood brother, Tony, and trying to clear him of rustling and murder charges. They meet up with T-Bone, a dimwitted giant of a man who is teamed with the ruthless Billy Driskell. They hunt now El Diablo, a psychotic loner who kills and rapes for pleasure. The third novel in a trilogy celebrating the tradition and legacy of the Texas Rangers, " Ranger Winds: The Last Ride" shows how the Rangers lived a life with demands that only a few good men could meet.
This volume describes research and theory concerning the cognitive neuroscience of attention. Filling a key gap, it emphasizes developmental changes that occur in the brain-attention relationship in infants, children, and throughout the lifespan and reviews the literature on attention, development, and underlying neural systems in a comprehensive manner. Special features include: * a new model of the neural control of eye movements; * a developmental perspective on the burgeoning literature on the cognitive neuroscience of attention; * the integration of ideas, research, and theories across chapters within each section via summary and commentary essays; and * a summary of the most recent work in the developmental cognitive neuroscience of attention by several of the leading researchers in this field. |
