Images of Judas across the centuries of Christian interpretation predominantly depict him as an object of horror and condemnation. Some modern interpreters have argued, however, that details about Judas in the canonical Gospels, such as his remorse and suicide, are tragic elements that vindicate Judas, to some extent at least. In addition, the recent discovery of the Gospel of Judas has provided further evidence that even in antiquity there were widely differing views of Judas. The question of the characterization of Judas in early Christianity remains open. Ancient rhetorical handbooks and countless examples from the literature of the Greco-Roman period reveal that death-accounts were regarded as fertile opportunities for shaping the characterization of a figure. Authors and audiences shared the expectation that the manner of a person's death revealed character. This insight provides a new window into the interpretation of Judas in the early Christian era, since three accounts of the death of Judas have survived from before 150 CE through the Gospel of Matthew, the Acts of the Apostles, and the fragments of Papias. Strategies for encomium and invective, and other elements of Greco-Roman and Jewish literary portraiture, vividly reveal the character-shaping significance of the details in the accounts of Judas's death. His final words, final actions, and the mode of his death-whether suicide by hanging, falling headlong and bursting, or swelling to the size of a wagon-all would have been understood to signify Judas's inner qualities and indicate his moral worth. To ancient auditors, the characterization of Judas in these texts could lead only to the assessment of Jesus, 'Woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed It would have been better for that one not to have been born' (Matt. 26.24).
On an idyllic and quiet December morning, the Farrington family was thrown into chaos by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Their lives would never be the same. The electron density of a nondegenerate ground state system determines essentially all physical properties of the system. In 1871 Kathryn Amhurst traveled from New Hampshire to the Pacific Northwest to marry Aaron Collier, a man she had never met. A spinster at 22, she did not choose to continue her teaching career or seek a husband in the East. She thought a challenging life awaited her in Washington Territory's wilderness. It did, in many ways. She experienced birth, death, sickness, accidents, various relationships, and with great courage she survived every one of them. She also felt the blush of first love, but not for her husband.
In 13 studies of representations of rape in medieval and early modern literature by such authors as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Spenser, this innovative book argues that some form of sexual violence against women has always served as a foundation of Western culture. The book has two purposes: to explore the resistance these pervasive representations generate for readers--especially for female readers--and to explore what these representations tell us about the relationships between men and women. Rose and Robertson focus in particular on the way depictions of rape make manifest a culture’s understanding of the female subject in society.
Since the eighteenth century, the one-to-one singing lesson has been the most common method of delivery. The scenario allows the teacher to familiarise and individualise the lesson to suit the needs of their student; however, it can also lead to speculation about what is taught. More troubling is the heightened risk of gossip and rumour with the private space generating speculation about the student–teacher relationship. Venanzio Rauzzini (1746–1810), an Italian castrato living in England who became a highly sought-after singing master, was particularly susceptible since his students tended to be women, whose moral character was under more scrutiny than their male counterparts. Even so in 1792, The Bath Chronicle proclaimed the Italian castrato: 'the father of a new style in English singing'. Branding Rauzzini as a founder of an English style was not an error, but indicative of deep-seated anxieties about the Italian invasion on England’s musical culture. This book places teaching at the centre of the socio-historical narrative and provides unique insight into musical culture. Using a microhistory approach, this study is the first to focus in on the impact of teaching and casts new light on issues of celebrity culture, gender and nationalism in Georgian England.

A Marker on Huff Creek is a fictional account based on historical facts. The focal point is a small stone marker that commemorates an unsolved murder which took place in Jackson County, Indiana in 1892. The murder is tied to many events related in the story. The authors characterize the marker as a symbol of the Huff Creek Valley, and the Valley as a microcosm of the grand phenomenon of Manifest Destiny. As an almost unimaginable migration swept into the region - some to stay, and others to pass on through - a wilderness was converted into civilization.
