On what basis are sibling relations made and negotiated and how do they change over time? How do siblings provide support, but also create pressure or conflict? Despite their importance as models for or contrasts to marriage, friendship, and nation, sibling relations have been largely ignored in anthropology. In this volume, the contributors provide a conceptualization of siblingship as shared parentage, exchange, and experience. They explore what makes these relations worth maintaining and how they contribute to wider community processes, material support, and emotional connection. The ethnographic case studies provide detailed descriptions of lived sibling relations in various settings across the globe.

In the case studies treated in this book, we show step-by-step examples of the physical arguments and the resulting calculations obtained using the quick-fire method. We also demonstrate the estimation improvements that can be obtained through the use of more detailed physics-based Back-of-the-Envelope engineering models. These different methods are used to obtain the solutions to a number of design and performance estimation problems arising from two of the most complex real-world engineering projects: the Space Shuttle and the Hubble Space Telescope satellite.

Obwohl die erste Auflage seit etwa 1964 vergriffen ist und damals schon del' Wunsch nach einer zweiten Auflage auftrat, haben sich die ruerfUr notwendigen Arbeiten langere Zeit hingezogen. Dies war auch dadurch bedingt, daB inzwi- schen die beiden Mitarbeiter del' ersten Auflage, die Herren Dir. Hans Muller und Dr.-Ing. Horst von Treufels, verstorben sind und die Neubearbeitung, die durch die starke Entwicklung unumganglich war, runsichtlich diesel' Kapitel und del' eigenen dem Herausgeber allein zufiel. Auf dem Gebiete del' Hochspannungstechnik haben sich die Anforderungen del' elektrischen Energieubertragung und des Elektrogeratebaus durch hohere Leistungen, hohere Ubertragungs-Spannungen und neuere Erkenntnisse run- sichtlich des Einflusses von Schaltspannungen und Fremdschichtbedingungen (Verschmutzung) auf die lsolierfahigkeit von lsolatoren weiter entwickelt und gesteigert. Die Hochfrequenztechnik war in del' erst en Auflage verhaltnismaBig kurz behandelt. Da das 1939 von Dr. Albers-Schonberg herausgegebene Buch "Hoch- frequenzkeramik" (Verlag Theodor Steinkopf, Dresden und Leipzig) keine weitere Auflage erlebt und sich dadurch eine Lucke fUr die in ihrer Bedeutung wichtige Hochfrequenzkeramik ergeben hat, so wurde es als Mangel angesehen werden mussen, wenn dieses Gebiet nicht in diesem Buch del' inzwischen einge- tretenen Entwicklung angepaBt ausfUhrlichel' behandelt worden ware. Auch auf dem Gebiete del' elektronischen und akustischen Geratetechnik sind auf dem keramischen Sektor Neuentwicklungen hinsichtlich keramischer Massen (Aluminiumoxid und allgemein Metalloxide), Anpassung del' Technologie, wirt- schaftlicher, rationeller Fertigungsverfahren eingetreten.
