Das Ifo-Institut flir Wirtschaftsforschung hat im Frlihjahr 1961 mit Unterstlitzung der Fritz-Thyssen-Stiftung eine "Afrika-Studienstelle" ins Leben gerufen, die sich mit den wirtschaftstheoretischen und wirtschaftspoli- tischen Problemen der Entwicklungsl:: inder - speziell der afrikanischen Staaten - auseinandersetzen solI. Die Studienstelle steht damit vor der Aufgabe, durch Untersuchungen liber Struktur und Wachstumsmoglichkeiten einzelner Entwicklungslander an der Schaffung der Grundlagen mitzuarbei- ten, auf den en die Entwicklungspolitik der Bundesrepublik sich wirkungsvoll zu entfalten vermag. Eine systematische wissenschaftliche Fundierung der Entwicklungspolitik kann dazu beitragen, dag die verfligbaren Mittel personeller und finanziel- ler Art den wirtschaftlichen und soziologischen Gegebenheiten del' Entwick- lungslander bestmoglich angepagt werden. Gewig soll wissenschaftliche Arbeit nicht in erster Linie auf unmittelbaren Nutzen sehen: "Sie will aus sich selbst gewertet werden; aber sie bleibt deshalb nicht ohne Einwirkung auf die praktische Wirklichkeit". Wenn diesel' Ausspruch des grog en deut- schen Afrikanisten Diederich Westermann auch flir die Forschungsergebnisse gelten sollte, die in den "Afrika-Studien" ihren publizistischen Niederschlag finden, so wurden wir darin die beste Rechtfertigung fur unsere Arbeiten sehen.
