This study of five key policy areas, from welfare reform to foreign
policy, demonstrates that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat
coalition failed to fulfil its promise to reverse the rising power
of the State. It exercised more subtle forms of 'soft power', often
in partnership with the private sector, and to the detriment of
ordinary citizens.

Near-Rings and Near-Fields opens with three invited lectures on
different aspects of the history of near-ring theory. These are
followed by 26 papers reflecting the diversity of the subject in
regard to geometry, topological groups, automata, coding theory and
probability, as well as the purely algebraic structure theory of
near-rings. Audience: Graduate students of mathematics and
algebraists interested in near-ring theory.

This volume brings together scholars from across Europe to
critically examine TV history programming in a period of political,
economic and cultural change. They look at links between
programming and national identity, consider the representation of
minorities, and explore a range of televisual genres and
techniques.
"Questioning Scotland" considers the ways in which Scottish
literature has often been discussed in parochial, essentialist
terms. It suggests that Scottish literary studies must now expand
its conceptual boundaries in order to account for changes taking
place at wider European and global levels. It is literary-based but
also scrutinizes the methodological construction process of
national traditions. Drawing on wider theories of postmodernism,
(post)nationalism and globalism, it will help map the changing
nature of national studies and Scottish studies in
particular.
This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to use ultrasound
to understand human physiology both in the clinical setting and the
classroom. Tremendous advances in ultrasound technology have
resulted in portable ultrasound systems that are easy to use,
produce excellent images, and are affordable with quality hand-held
and laptop-sized systems costing between $2K and $20K. These
systems are now being used at the patient bedside or point of care
by almost all medical and surgical specialities from primary care
to orthopaedic surgery. These portable systems, especially the
hand-held devices, are now being called the stethoscopes of the
21st century and will likely be used by many that are presently
using stethoscopes including physicians, nurses, physician
assistants, medics and other health professionals. Ultrasound began
to be used in medical student education in the 1990s and is
steadily becoming a common teaching tool for courses like anatomy
and physiology. It is a visual, highly interactive learning tool
that bridges the basic and clinical sciences and allows the learner
to observe physiology principles in a living model. Ultrasound is
also being used to teach other health professions students as well
as undergraduate college students and high school students. Despite
this interest there are no books available that provide an
introduction to ultrasound and how it can be used to enhance the
teaching of physiology. This e-book will do just that as well as
offer "How to Scan" videos with example laboratory exercises to
further engage learners.
(From the Preface) “The author has attempted to show how the
original five counties in 1812 were divided and sub-divided until,
by 1862, 114 counties had emerged. Reynolds County at one time, at
least in part, has been a portion of seven counties; Ste.
Genevieve, Cape Girardeau, Washington, Wayne, Madison, Ripley, and
Shannon.”
Much has been written about the Walt Disney Company's productions,
but the focus has largely been on animation and feature film
created by Disney. In this essay collection, the attention is
turned to The Disney Channel and the programs it presents for a
largely tween audience. Since its emergence as a market category in
the 1980s, the tween demographic has commanded purchasing power and
cultural influence, and the impressionability and social
development of the age group makes it an important range of people
to study. Presenting both a groundbreaking view of The Disney
Channel's programming by the numbers and a deep focus on many of
the best-known programs and characters of the 2000s--shows like The
Wizards of Waverly Place, That's So Raven and Hannah Montana--this
collection asks the simple questions, "What does The Disney Channel
Universe look and sound like? Who are the stories about? Who
matters on The Disney Channel?
