This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 2.5 license. This book
describes the extensive contributions made toward the advancement
of human assessment by scientists from one of the world's leading
research institutions, Educational Testing Service. The book's four
major sections detail research and development in measurement and
statistics, education policy analysis and evaluation, scientific
psychology, and validity. Many of the developments presented have
become de-facto standards in educational and psychological
measurement, including in item response theory (IRT), linking and
equating, differential item functioning (DIF), and educational
surveys like the National Assessment of Educational Progress
(NAEP), the Programme of international Student Assessment (PISA),
the Progress of International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) and
the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). In addition to
its comprehensive coverage of contributions to the theory and
methodology of educational and psychological measurement and
statistics, the book gives significant attention to ETS work in
cognitive, personality, developmental, and social psychology, and
to education policy analysis and program evaluation. The chapter
authors are long-standing experts who provide broad coverage and
thoughtful insights that build upon decades of experience in
research and best practices for measurement, evaluation, scientific
psychology, and education policy analysis. Opening with a chapter
on the genesis of ETS and closing with a synthesis of the
enormously diverse set of contributions made over its 70-year
history, the book is a useful resource for all interested in the
improvement of human assessment.
When we imagine life behind the high walls of the fortress-like
prisons that were built and modified as the modern prison system
was created in the mid-nineteenth century, we conjure up scenes
where strict regulation prevailed to control people in body and in
mind. An image that poses something of a paradox is that of mothers
and their babies living in this carceral environment. This book
looks behind the cell doors of these institutions to illuminate the
experiences of this group of prisoners. The management of their
health alongside the management of penal discipline posed complex
conundrums to the prison system. Although rarely fully considered
at policy level, this balancing act was negotiated by those who
lived and worked in prisons on a daily basis. -- .
This book contributes to the global turn in First World War studies
by exploring Australians' engagements with the conflict across
varied boundaries and by situating Australian voices and
perspectives within broader, more complex contexts. This diverse
and multifaceted collection includes chapters on the composition
and contribution of the Australian Imperial Force, the experiences
of prisoners of war, nurses and Red Cross workers, the resonances
of overseas events for Australians at home, and the cultural
legacies of the war through remembrance and representation. The
local-global framework provides a fresh lens through which to view
Australian connections with the Great War, demonstrating that there
is still much to be said about this cataclysmic event in modern
history.
The last few years have seen an increasing awareness among the
mental health community to the unique situations of the person
suffering simultaneously from mental health disorders and substance
abuse addiction. Complementing this rise in attention has been a
realization of the unique challenges faced by mental health
professionals engaged in the treatment of these clients, and a
startling acknowledgement of the gap in the existing literature on
the topic. There is currently no available treatment manual that
includes specific training on how to treat this difficult
population, following guidelines and practical instructions based
on treatment practices already employed by the authors. This
treatment manual will fill an important gap in the literature by
addressing the specific challenges faced by the clinician treating
individuals with co-occurring schizophrenia and substance abuse
disorders.
The unique strength of the proposed volume is its close adherence
to a treatment plan proven successful by empirical research and now
being made available for the practicing clinician. The book is
designed as a manual for mental health professionals, and follows a
program which incorporates various treatment components, from
motivational interviewing, urinalysis contingency, and social
skills training to education and coping skills, problem solving and
relapse prevention, and finally termination. Guidelines are clearly
established for these treatment modes, utilizing case examples and
fictional situations to allow the reader to profit more directly
from the lessons in the text. The book follows a treatment outline
that will allow the clinician to pattern a series of therapy
sessions after thesuggested timeframe found within the text.
Additionally, the format and flow of individual sessions is
carefully considered and discussed, allowing the clinician a model
from which to base a treatment plan.
The four volumes of Game Equilibrium Models present applications of
non-cooperative game theory. Problems of strategic interaction
arising in biology, economics, political science and the social
sciences in general are treated in 42 papers on a wide variety of
subjects. Internationally known authors with backgrounds in various
disciplines have contributed original research. The reader finds
innovative modelling combined with advanced methods of analysis.
The four volumes are the outcome of a research year at the Center
for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Bielefeld. The
close interaction of an international interdisciplinary group of
researchers has produced an unusual collection of remarkable
results of great interest for everybody who wants to be informed on
the scope, potential, and future direction of work in applied game
theory. Volume III Strategic Bargaining contains ten papers on game
equilibrium models of bargaining. All these contributions look at
bargaining situations as non-cooperative games. General models of
two-person and n-person bargaining are explored.
The Handbook of Formative Assessment in the Disciplines
meaningfully addresses current developments in the field, offering
a unique and timely focus on domain dependency. Building from an
updated definition of formative assessment, the book covers the
integration of measurement principles into practice; the
operationalization of formative assessment within specific domains,
beyond generic strategies; evolving research directions including
student involvement and self-regulation; and new approaches to the
challenges of incorporating formative assessment training into
pre-service and in-service educator training. As supporters of
large-scale testing programs increasingly consider the potential of
formative assessments to improve teaching and learning, this
handbook advances the subject through novel frameworks,
intersections of theory, research, and practice, and attention to
discernible disciplines. Written for instructors, graduate
students, researchers, and policymakers, each chapter provides
expert perspectives on the procedures and evaluations that enable
teachers to adapt teaching and learning in-process toward student
achievement.
The correlation between schizophrenia and substance abuse in
psychology is recognized as a growing issue, yet it is one that
many practitioners are often ill-prepared to address. Behavioral
Treatment for Substance Abuse in People with Serious and Persistent
Mental Illness addresses the specific challenges faced by the
clinician treating individuals with co-occurring schizophrenia and
substance abuse disorders. Designed as a treatment manual for
mental health professionals, the book incorporates various
treatment components, from motivational interviewing and social
skills training to education, problem solving, and relapse
prevention. The book presents clearly established guidelines for
these treatment modes and utilizes both case examples and fictional
situations to present a practical, hands-on approach. Readers will
profit directly from the lessons in the book, which offers the
clinician an invaluable model from which to base a treatment plan.
Two hundred years ago in Florida, the valleys of the St. Marys
and the St. Johns seethed with intrigue as a band of settlers
audaciously conspired to overthrow the Spanish colonial government.
Long a specialist in Florida history, Congressman Charles E.
Bennett in this book traces France's attempt to gain control of
Florida in 1793-95 by supporting this abortive rebellion.
From a wilderness inhabited only by Indians Florida evolved into
a region of wealth in Indian trade and one of political importance
to rival European factions. Discovered by Spain in the early
sixteenth century, Florida's northern frontier was colonized in the
late 1700s, mainly by Anglo-Saxons who were unhappy living under
Spanish rule.
Initially supported by the French, a group of the colonists
plotted a revolt, which was officially repudiated by France in 1794
when its governing power changed hands. The Anglo-Saxons continued
the conspiracy, quietly encouraged by the French. Eventually
arrested and tried by the Spanish, many of these men were
landowners who had sworn loyalty to Spain. Bennett has recreated
this intriguing scenario through translations of the original
Spanish documents of the criminal proceedings against these
revolutionaries and through their personal correspondence.
Bennett places these events in the contemporary scene of
European and American affairs: the United States playing the
careful and ambiguous role of a neutral, marking the beginnings of
an American foreign policy; France, in revolt at home and at war
with Spain, struggling to gain a foothold in the New World; and
Spain, trying to maintain its weakening hold in North America. The
territorial ambitions of these three nations mirrored ideological
and political conflicts in Europe and helped to shape the two-party
system in the United States.
First published in 1931, this book provides a brief overview of the
essentials of philosophy. It aims to combat the notion of the
inaccessibility of philosophy by providing an introduction to its
history and what the author believes to a 'minimum dose...of
incontrovertible philosophical truth'. The book merely assumes an
ordinary level of adult education and offers an outline of the key
areas of philosophy - consciousness, reality, experience, Life,
God, love, aesthetics, conduct, logic - and as such will be of
interest as a very useful starting point for anyone wishing to
undertake further studies.

Frontinus, Sextus Iulius, ca. 35-103 CE, was a capable Roman civil
officer and military commander. Praetor of the city in 70 and
consul in 73 or 74, 98 and 100, he was, about the year 76, sent to
Britain as governor. He quelled the Silures of Wales, and began to
build a road through their territory; his place was taken by
Agricola in 78. In 97 he was given the highly esteemed office of
Manager of Aqueducts at Rome. He is known to have been an augur,
being succeeded by his friend Pliny the younger.
The two sides of Frontinus's public career are reflected in his
two surviving works. 'Strategemata', "Stratagems," written after
84, gives examples of military stratagems from Greek and Roman
history, for the instruction of Roman officers, in three books; the
fourth book is concerned largely with military discipline. 'De
Aquis urbis Romae', "The Aqueducts of Rome," written in 97-98,
gives some historical details and a description of the aqueducts
for the water supply of the city, with laws relating to them.
Frontinus aimed at being useful and writes in a rather popular
style which is both simple and clear.
