In hierdie werk word gekonsentreer op die gemene onderliggende
beginsels van enersyds die verskillende vorme van saaklike
sekerheidsregte waar telkens sprake is van 'n bepaalde saak as
preferente skuldeiser. By persoonlike sekerheidsregte word
daarteenoor verhaal geneem op bates wat aan 'n ander regsubjek as
die primere skuldenaar behoort en wat dus nie deel van die saldo
van die skuldenaar se bates vorm nie.
This book of friends (liber amicorum) is a tribute to Professor JC
Sonnekus by colleagues and friends from Europe and South Africa to
celebrate his more than 40 years in the academy and his
contribution to law and its development. Authors from Belgium, the
Netherlands, Germany and South Africa make contributions on the
multitude of subjects and areas of jurisdiction to which professor
Sonnekus contributed over the years. Subjects that are discussed,
are divided under a general heading, the recognition and
enforcement of judgments, prescription, uncertainty regarding
common law rules and how the courts sometimes act in a law-making
capacity, conditional cession and `who has the King's voice' -
looking back at the convictions of the people and the legal
convictions in the nineteenth century and how it could still lead
to new insights. The law of delict leads to contributions on
accountability of children, the law concerning liability in general
and liability for an omission. The law of succession contains
contributions on wills and trustees; the section on estoppel and
enrichment touches on aspects of estoppel and the Turquand rule, as
well as Ponzi schemes and pyramid schemes. International
developments are discussed in the section on the law of marriage
and family law with contributions on marriage contracts and the
consequences of divorce under German law, general matrimonial
property law in Europe and the influence of the Belgian
constitutional court on family law. Insolvency law includes
business rescue and the actio Pauliana and the law of contract
contains a potpourri of contributions on the interpretation of
contracts, perpetual contracts, evictions and independent
warranties. The law of things (property) section contains
contributions on property law and habitatio, credit security law,
fragmented property, syndicated loans, servitudes and digital
assets. This collection of essays concludes with two contributions
on insurance law relating to self-steering and distance-steered
vehicles and the sources of insurance law.

An anthology of noir stories set in the tumultuous metropolis,
Lagos. Edited by Chris Abani, this collection brings together brand
new stories from some of Nigeria's best loved writers. From the
introduction by Chris Abani: The thirteen stories that comprise
this volume stretch the boundaries of "noir" fiction, but each one
of them fully captures the essence of noir, the unsettled darkness
that continues to lurk in the city's streets, alleys, and
waterways...Together, these stories create an unchartered path
through the center of Lagos and out to its peripheries, revealing
so much more truth at the heart of this tremendous city than any
guidebook, TV show, film, or book you are likely to find.

Tales from writers with Latinx, Caribbean, Asian, African, Arabic,
North American, East European origins, and more, challenge the
reader with stories that spill out into space, parallel realms or
just hidden in plain sight. The stories explore the world from the
perspective of the incoming, whether necessitated through war or
oppression, financial or familial need, or with hope for a better
future, examining visions of displacement and relocation in future
and speculative settings. New stories selected from open
submissions are set alongside classic sci-fi by the likes of Otto
(Eando) Binder and Zenna Henderson, modern stories by such authors
as Celu Amberstone and Ken Liu, and older, realist immigrant
narratives by Abraham Cahan, Sui Sin Far, Lee Yan Phou, Constantine
Panunzio and more. Complemented by a foreword by author E.C. Osondu
and an insightful introduction by Betsy Huang, Ph.D., this is an
intriguing view of the conflict and anxiety between the settled and
the unsettled. The Flame Tree Gothic Fantasy, Classic Stories and
Epic Tales collections bring together the entire range of myth,
folklore and modern short fiction. Highlighting the roots of
suspense, supernatural, science fiction and mystery stories, the
books in Flame Tree Collections series are beautifully presented,
perfect as a gift and offer a lifetime of reading pleasure.
The aim of this publication is to equip managers with insight into

Originally published in 1989, this volume carefully catalogues and
classifies the effect of bias on quantitative judgments. Each bias
is described by model and examples of this bias are given. The
examples include both theoretical investigations carried out in the
laboratory to study bias and practical illustrations. They are
accompanied by a discussion of methods of avoiding bias, where this
is possible. An early look into this now widely recognised subject,
this book was an invaluable resource for investigators and
practitioners in applied science at the time.
First Published in 1976, Arab Dollars for Africa examines how Arab
funds can be recycled into the African Economy. The long-term
industrial future of the Arab oil producers is dependent on the
availability of raw materials. Africa as a whole contains vast
reserves of vital minerals, but they require considerable
investment for their exploitation. The Arab states are well placed
to participate in the development of the African economy both on
the basis of state-to-state cooperation and through individual
enterprises. Africa and the Arab world share economic goals as
members of the developing world and as key primary producers and
have a common purpose in bringing about a new international
economic order. This book deals in detail with investment
opportunities in national development banks and in individual
agricultural and industrial projects. This is an important
historical analysis for scholars and researchers of African
studies, international politics and geopolitics.
Routledge is now re-issuing this prestigious series of 204 volumes

Isaacs. Each volume is available on its own, as part of a themed

The environmental impacts of acid rain: on human health, on
buildings and materials, on forests, freshwaters, crops and
biodiversity and on global warming have been well-documented. Less
is known about the extent and economic costs of these impacts. This
book describes the first major implementation of an integrated
scientific and economic assessment of the consequences of acid
rain. It provides an extensive data review and examines how this
unique approach to assessment modelling can be can be used to
calculate an acidification cost per unit of pollutant in monetary
terms. Part One focuses on the methodological issues of scientific
measurement of acidification, dose-response relationships and
economic approaches to acidification control. Part Two looks at the
environmental impacts and economic consequences of acidification.
Affected environmental media and human health are investigated in
separate chapters, each including both scientific and economic
analyses. Part Three provides a summary of the findings and makes
recommendations for further application of these types of results
to policy actions.
Series Information: Leverhulme Primary Project - Classroom Skills
Primary teachers have always been required to master a wealth of
knowledge and professional skills and recent debate has led to
pressure for ever higher levels of competence. Ted Wragg's book
aims to provide a comprehensive guide to the skills needed by
today's primary teachers. Separate chapters cover such central
demands of the job as explaining new topics, asking stimulating
questions and settling down with a new class, and one chapter is
devoted to the particular problems of supply teachers. Based on
extensive research in classrooms over a number of years, "Primary
Teaching Skills" is designed for both student and novice teachers,
as well as their more experienced colleagues at any stage of their
professional development.
This text describes the underlying behaviour of steel and concrete
bridge decks. It shows how complex structures can be analyzed with
physical reasoning and relatively simple computer models, and
without complicated mathematics. In recent years the computer
methods of grillage and space frame have become very popular and
accessible as microcomputers and software have developed rapidly.
In this second edition, the intrinsic safety of these methods when
used in a systematic manner is explained. New chapters have been
included on the analysis of distortion of box girder bridges, on
the stiffnesses of supports and foundations, and on integral
bridges. The chapter on beam decks and frames now includes
demonstrations of the influence of foundation stiffnesses on the
frame behaviour of a portal bridge and an arching structure.
Coverage of beam-and-slab bridges has been enlarged to explain
"torsionless design" which simplifies the design of some bridges.
New examples illustrate the grillage analysis of a composite bridge
using AASHTO type prestressed concrete girders, and of a composite
steel deck. Additional comparisons between grillage and finite
strip analyses of cellular structures are

Recent decades have witnessed both a renewed energy in feminist
activism and widespread attacks taking back hard-won rights.
Despite powerful feminist movements, the Covid-19 pandemic has
significantly undermined the progress women have struggled for
decades to achieve; how can this be? What explains this paradox of
a strong feminist movement coexisting with stubborn patriarchal
arrangements? How can we stop the next global catastrophe
initiating a similar backlash? This book suggests that the
limitations of social theory prevent feminist strategies from
initiating transformative changes and achieving permanent gains. It
investigates the impact of theoretical shortcomings upon feminist
strategies by engaging with two clusters of work: ungendered
accounts of capitalist development and theories on gendered
oppression and inequality. Decentring feminist theorising grounded
in histories and developments of the global North, the book
provides an original theory of the patriarchal system by analysing
changes within its forms and degrees as well as investigating the
relationship between the gender, class and race-ethnicity based
inequalities. Turkey offers a case that challenges assumptions and
calls for rethinking major feminist categories and theories,
thereby shedding light on the dynamics of social change in the
global South. The timely intervention of this book is, therefore,
crucial for feminist strategies going forward. The book emerges at
the intersections between Gender, International Development,
Political Economy, and Sociology and its main readership will be
found in, but not limited to, these disciplinary fields. The
material covered in this book will be of great interest to students
and researchers in these areas as well as policy makers and
feminist activists.

Teaching Human Rights in Primary Schools delves into the important
issue of Human Rights Education (HRE) implementation, exploring the
nature and extent of HRE in education policy and practice in
English primary schooling, and seeking to understand the reasons
for deficiencies in practice in this area. HRE enables people not
only to identify rights violations in their own lives, but also
equips them with the knowledge, values and skills required to
accept, defend and promote human rights more broadly. An awareness
of human rights is therefore crucial, no matter what a person's
age, and as such it is vital that information about human rights is
included within formal education. Beginning with an overview of the
relevant international obligations and agreements related to HRE,
Struthers then demonstrates that these are ostensibly not currently
being met in either policy or practice in England. The book then
draws upon current literature and empirical research with teachers
to explore and analyse the barriers to HRE implementation. While
the book uses the specific context of English primary education, it
makes broad interdisciplinary recommendations concerning how the
provision of HRE could be improved, which will be relevant to other
countries instituting programmes of HRE or values and citizenship
education. Interdisciplinary in nature and addressing HRE at both
the international and domestic levels, this book will be of great
interest to scholars, researchers and postgraduate students in both
education and law. It will be of particular interest to those
engaged in the study of human rights, children's rights and
education law, as well as those interested in curriculum policy and
development, teaching methodologies and the sociology of education.
It should also be essential reading for teacher educators, teachers
and policymakers.

Archaeoastronomy is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary inquiry
into the minds of our prehistoric and ancient ancestors, one that
attempts to reconstruct the ways in which early peoples made use of
the sky and its significance to them. Astronomy appears to be a
fundamental component of culture, making the scope of
archaeoastronomy worldwide. Thi
Assessment is now regarded as a 'high stakes' issue: schools,
teachers, and individual pupils are often judged by the results of
national tests and public examinations. This book addresses both
formal and informal ways of assessing children's work and progress.
Pupils' learning is often neglected in the debate, so this book
puts what children actually learn right at its centre and involves
them sensibly and appropriately in the improvement of teaching and
learning. The book is divided into six units where Ted Wragg
address topics such as: principles and purposes of assessment
written, oral and practical evaluation self-assessment the 'whole
school' approach staff development and appraisal. The inclusion of
tried and tested practical activities, discussion topics,
photographs, cartoons and case examples makes this a very
user-friendly book for both trainee and experienced teachers in
secondary schools. This is one of a set of eight innovative yet
practical resource books for teachers, focussing on the classroom
and covering vital skills for primary and secondary teachers. The
books are strongly influenced by the findings of numerous research
projects during which hundreds of teachers were observed at work.
The first editions of the series were bestsellers, and these
revised second editions will be equally welcomed by teachers eager
to improve their teaching skills.

and searching questions, to use questioning for different purposes
and to know what to do with the answers is crucial to teachers of
all subjects and age groups. Sometimes a whole lesson can be built
around one or two key questions. In Questioning in the Primary
School, esteemed authors Ted Wragg and George Brown explore the
wide range of questions that teachers can ask, from those requiring
simple recall of information right up to those that stimulate
complex reasoning, imagination and speculation. The book explores
the various strategies open to teachers and, through a combination
of activities and discussion points, helps pupils to: *reflect upon
their use of questions *develop their approaches to preparing,
using and evaluating questions *explore ways to encourage pupils to
ask questions.
