Originally published in 1923, this book contains twelve essays on
English literature and analysis. Kellett prefaces the collection by
saying that, although many of his opinions in the essays will not
be universally accepted, 'it will be enough if they provoke thought
and stimulate discussion'. Six of the articles concern
Shakespeare's style and attitude, while the other half examine
authors such as Chaucer, Macaulay and Dryden. This book will be of
value to anyone with an interest in English literature and
historical literary criticism.
Ernest Edward Kellett (1864 1950) was an English writer and
literary critic who was senior English master at the Leys School,
Cambridge from 1889 to 1924. Originally published in 1928, this
book presents a selection of thirteen essays by Kellett on a
variety of literary figures and themes. Reflecting the author's
often outspoken views, the text contains many 'audacious
traversings' of widely held opinions regarding certain figures and
'reconsiderations' of previously held critical positions. This book
will be of value to anyone with an interest in literary criticism
and the writings of Kellett."
