The result of a European-American co-operation, whose joint efforts
have dramatically reduced the rate of recurrent groin hernia, burst
abdomen and incisional hernia in patients.
The contributors to this updated volume are among the most renowned
specialists in the field and here they present personal accounts of
the once controversial techniques they have now perfected.
New sections have been added to include such revolutionary
techniques as prosthetic mesh and laparoscopic surgery.
As part of this multilayered conversation about stigma, this volume
discusses the relationship between the stigmatized individual and
our role as researchers. Here we address our own perspectives as
researchers struggling with stigma issues and tellability, as well
as scholarly reflexive concerns dealing with what can't be said
when working with stigmatized groups or topics. The disciplinary
focus of folklore positions us well to concentrate on the
vernacular experience of the stigmatized, but it also propels us
toward analysis of the performance of stigma, the process of
stigmatization, and the political representation of stigmatized
populations. These perspectives come to the fore in this book, as
does the multilayered nature of stigma-its ability to reproduce,
overlap, and spread, not just in terms of replication but also in
terms of the ethnographer's ability to apprehend it and her ability
to research and write about it.
Since its publication in 1989, Console and Classify has become a
classic work in the history of science and in French intellectual
history. Now with a new afterword, this much-cited and
much-discussed book gives readers the chance to revisit the rise of
psychiatry in nineteenth-century France, the shape it took and why,
and its importance both then and in contemporary society.
"Goldstein has raised our understanding of the politics of
psychiatric professionalization on to a new plane."-Roy Porter,
Times Higher Education Supplement "[A]n historiographical tour de
force, quite simply the most insightful work on the subject in
English or any other language. . . . [A] work of distinctive
originality. . . . It is written with lucidity and elegance, even a
certain confident scholarly panache, that make it a pleasure to
read."-Toby Gelfand, Social History "Exhaustively researched,
elegantly written, and persuasively argued, Console and Classify is
an excellent example of the . . . sociologically informed
intellectual history, stimulated by Kuhn and Foucault."-Robert Alun
Jones, American Journal of Sociology
This book tells the amazing story of perception -- how experiences
are created by your senses and how you use these experiences to
interact with the environment. You might be surprised to know that
although perception is easy -- we see, hear, feel touch, and
experience taste and smell without much effort -- the mechanisms
that create perceptions are both extremely complex and hidden from
our view. SENSATION AND PERCEPTION unravels these complexities by
taking you on a journey that describes perceptual research in a
clear easy-to-understand way, and by linking the results of this
research to your everyday experience. The text is supported by
beautiful color illustrations, a media program that makes
perception come alive (in the MindTap digital learning solution),
and learning aids to help you understand and remember what you have
read.
The Juvenile Justice Anger Management (JJAM) Treatment for Girls is
a manualized anger management and aggression reduction treatment
designed for adolescent girls and young women placed in residential
juvenile justice facilities. This gender-specific treatment is an
8-week, cognitive-behavioral group intervention that consists of 16
90-minute sessions. The JJAM Facilitator Manual includes a
user-friendly, session-by-session guide, along with the
accompanying workbook materials for youth participants. JJAM
addresses the unique gender- and developmental-needs of girls and
young women in juvenile justice system, such as the link between
relational and physical aggression, the importance of strengthening
and repairing damaged relationships, and the need to transfer
skills learned in a facility to day-to-day life in the community
following discharge. Session activities elicit real-life examples
from participants so that activities and content can be tailored to
the characteristics, needs, and interests of the specific girls and
young women in each group. JJAM was developed through a rigorous
research process and is identified as an empirically based program
and empirically supported treatment. Studies have shown that JJAM
significantly reduced anger and aggression among girls in
residential juvenile justice facilities, making it an essential
resource for any clinician working on anger management treatment.
Ever since they were young, Peggy Cryden noticed her children's
gender expression did not correspond with society's expectations of
their biological gender. In this moving and honest memoir, Peggy
details the experiences and challenges of raising both a gay son
and a gay, transgender son and shares her family's journey of
adversity and growth, which has helped inform her work as a
psychotherapist. Beginning with her own unconventional upbringing
and personal relationships, the second half of the book follows her
children from birth to adulthood and through their numerous
experiences including coming out, depression, hate crime,
relationships, school and various aspects to do with transitioning
(legal, physical, medical, social) as well as their appearances in
the media as a family. This book is insightful, charming and
thought-provoking, and through levity and humour, offers a positive
approach to parenting outside of convention.
Three years ago, rising cycling star Cal Scott abruptly quit his T
Mobile team and returned to California, determined to abandon
racing forever. Now Cal's father has an offer: Join him for a trip
to Italy for some recreational cycling, no strings attached. Cal
suspects that his bulldog-defense-attorney father has another
agenda; the trip coincides with Bassano del Grappa's tortuous race
up the slopes of Monte Grappa. In Italy, Cal comes under the
tutelage of his father's friend and famous cycling coach, Gianni Di
Salvo, who brings Cal onto his team with the offer of all the
support he needs to enter and win the race, if only he can get his
head and heart right with racing again. Cal discovers the embers of
racing still burn hot, as does his love for Di Salvo's beautiful
daughter, Daniella. Chain Reaction tells the story of Cal's quest
to purge himself of his past and discover that beyond the cutthroat
side of pro cycling is the essence of the sport: being pushed
beyond one's limit to achieve the impossible.
This book covers all facets involving the production and use of
ethanol. Topics include the optimization of raw materials, energy,
capital, process model-based computer control, and human resources
to produce ethanol. It compares and contrasts processes to prepare
ethanol using biotechnology processes to prepare ethanol from
chemical synthesis. Matters of optimization of ethanol use as
fuel/fuel components are addressed based on thermodynamics,
kinetics, and usage. It also discusses pollutants produced from
ethanol and mixtures containing ethanol, the status of ways to
control these pollutants, and what can be done to minimize the harm
to the earth's ecosystems due to ethanol and gasoline reactions.
A Proactive Approach to Improving and Protecting the Environment
The accumulation of pharmaceuticals in the environment is a growing
concern, the magnitude of which has not been determined, yet cannot
be ignored. Touting the benefits of research and discovery as it
relates to a pharmaceutical presence in the environment,
Pharmaceutical Accumulation in the Environment: Prevention,
Control, Health Effects, and Economic Impact explores ways to
effectively minimize the harmful impact of environmental
contaminants. It considers current practice in the field, provides
a historical reference, and presents effective methods for
detecting and containing low levels of environmental contaminants.
It also offers practical suggestions for mobilizing private and
public resources. Discusses Health Impacts and Risks to Humans and
Other Living Species The contributors of this work consider
important environmental contaminants that include pharmaceuticals,
personal care products, and special products, such as contrast
agents and illicit drugs. This book describes current health impact
concerns, methods for assessing risk, and lessening the negative
impact on health through research and analysis. It examines the
costs of wastewater treatment, and considers ways to potentially
reduce the effect of environmental contaminants in treated water
and in the soil. It looks at what may be done about contaminated
soil and landfills, addresses the costs of contaminant elimination,
and suggests ways to get rid of contaminants sensibly and
consistently. It also includes case histories and chapters authored
by specialists who are experts in their fields. Developed as a
reference for professionals and senior undergraduate and graduate
students in environmental science/ecotoxicology, the text proposes
advancements and applications that can help control pharmaceutical
accumulation and improve the environment. It serves as a resource
for those in the pharmaceutical industries, personal care product
industries, and related areas; scientists and researchers in
related areas; as well as environmental protection agencies,
physicians, and medical personnel.
