The IUT AM / IFToMM Symposium on Synthesis of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems, held in Riga, Latvia, 24-28 August 1998, was one of a series of IUTAM sponsored symposia which focus on the theory and application of methods of nonlinear dynamics in mechanics. The symposium follows eighteen symposia on Analysis and Synthesis of Nonlinear Mechanical Oscillatory Systems held at Riga Technical University from 1971 to 1991 and in 1996 (prof. E. Lavendelis and Prof. M. Zakrzhevsky). Early in the late fifties and sixties Prof. J. G. Panovko organised several successful conferences in Riga on Nonlinear Oscillations. The participants in all these conferences and symposia (except 1996) were only from the ex-Soviet Union. This symposium, organised by the Institute of Mechanics of Riga Technical University, brought together scientists active in different fields of nonlinear dynamics. Selected scientists from 14 countries represented a wide range of expertise in' mechanics, from pure theoreticians to people primarily oriented towards application of nonlinear and chaotic dynamics and nonlinear oscillations. The goal of the symposium was to stimulate development of the theory of strongly nonlinear dynamical systems and its new applications in the fields of applied mechanics, engineering and other branches of science and technology.

Enduring Truth argues that faithfulness to Scripture is the solution to a "crisis" among African American preaching. Though misinterpreting God's Word is not restricted to one race or culture, author Aaron Lavender identifies three factors that have precipitated the decline of black preaching specifically: racial segregation, black liberation theology, and prosperity theology. The book's first chapter recounts the history of the crisis, noting how discrimination in theological education led black ministers to liberal colleges and seminaries that prophetically confronted Jim Crow but taught the social gospel and other forms of theological error. Such schools ultimately were harmful to the spiritual health of black churches. Subsequent chapters discuss the role of biblical exegesis in preaching, develop a theology of preaching, and suggest preaching methods for the postmodern world. Every biblical text has one meaning, according to Lavender. The preacher's job is to determine and communicate that meaning, then show its relevance in the cultural context of his hearers. Proof-texting and relativism, Lavender writes, are two great enemies of biblical preaching. While focused on the African American context, this volume addresses topics relevant to all preachers. Enduring Truth is suited both for ministry practitioners and preaching courses. It will help readers elevate the Word of God over the worldly allures of any ministry setting.
Merriam Press Military Monograph 222. Seventh Edition (November 2012). Lavender was a member of Company I, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, originally arriving as a replacement in early October 1944 in the Huertgen Forest. There are a lot of stories about the war. Some have been made into movies. If you are looking for sensationalism, you won't find it here. If you have an interest in what war was like to a 20-year-old in the Infantry, Nudge Blue comes close to describing that experience. The combat portion of this story was written directly from notes accumulated during the actual fighting. In the over 50 years since, facts about places and unit action have been verified to assure accuracy. It includes action in several places that are famous-the Huertgen Forest, the Bulge, the Rhine River crossing at Remagen and contact with the Russians on the Elbe River. The military experience prior to combat, the post-war situation in Europe and commentary about war, in the appendices, were added later. Veterans who were in I Company of the 39th Infantry have commented favorably about Nudge Blue acknowledging it to be a faithful description of their personal experience. Lavender's experiences in combat make for fascinating, insightful reading, and an excellent companion to the late Bob Baldridge's Victory Road, showing what it was like to be an infantryman in the 9th Division. Contents: The Fatal Forest; Blocking the Bulge; From River to River; Bridgehead Battle; On to the East; Deutschland Kaput. Appendices: Writing Nudge Blue; At the Convenience of the Government; Observations on the Battle for Germany; The Huertgen Forest; Our Part in the Bulge; Bridge Anniversary; The Decision Not to Go to Berlin; Facts and Quotes; What is There About War? 26 photos, 1 illustration, 2 maps.
