Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

Verna doesn't want to get married, but is swept off her feet by the
brilliant and charming Jeff. He promises her that he will earn a
million dollars, and she believes him. Verna was just waiting to
find a man in control of his destiny. Against the background of the
scientific advances of World War II, Jeff predicts that ships from
earth will travel to other planets, perhaps by "sailing" in space,
propelled by solar winds.
Jeff's genius, vision and hard work bring great success He is
able to retire early to pursue original research, but Verna soon
begins to suspect that something is very wrong. The peaceful life
she anticipated is torn apart when Jeff's behavior becomes
increasingly unpredictable. Verna looks everywhere for answers and
finally confronts the frightening reality of early-onset
Alzheimer's Disease In order to survive--both financially and
emotionally--Verna must somehow find within herself the strength
for both of them.
Adaptation in Young Adult Novels argues that adapting classic and
canonical literature and historical places engages young adult
readers with their cultural past and encourages them to see how
that past can be rewritten. The textual afterlives of classic texts
raise questions for new readers: What can be changed? What benefits
from change? How can you, too, be agents of change? The
contributors to this volume draw on a wide range of contemporary
novels - from Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series and Megan
Shepherd's Madman's Daughter trilogy to Jesmyn Ward's Salvage the
Bones - adapted from mythology, fairy tales, historical places, and
the literary classics of Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen,
and F. Scott Fitzgerald, among others. Unpacking the new
perspectives and critiques of gender, sexuality, and the cultural
values of adolescents inherent to each adaptation, the essays in
this volume make the case that literary adaptations are just as
valuable as original works and demonstrate how the texts studied
empower young readers to become more culturally, historically, and
socially aware through the lens of literary diversity.

Born into a Sephardic Jewish immigrant family, Dr. Issachar
Zacharie was the preeminent foot doctor for the American political
elite before and during the Civil War. An expert in pain
management, Zacharie treated the likes of Henry Clay, John C.
Calhoun, General George McClelland and most notably, President
Abraham Lincoln. As Zacharie's professional and personal
relationship with Lincoln deepened, the President began to entrust
the doctor with political missions. Throughout Lincoln's
presidency, Zacharie traveled to southern cities like New Orleans
and Richmond in efforts to ally with some of the Confederacy's most
influential Jewish citizens. This biography explores Dr. Zacharie's
life, from his birth in Chatham, England, through his medical
practice, espionage career and eventual political campaigning for
President Lincoln.
This intriguing book examines Lincoln's assassination from a
behavioral and medical sciences perspective, providing new insights
into everything from ballistics and forensics to the medical
intervention to save his life, the autopsy results, his compromised
embalming, and the final odyssey of his bodily remains. In this
book, E. Lawrence Abel sheds much-needed light on the fascinating
details surrounding the death of Abraham Lincoln, including John
Wilkes Booth's illness that turned him into an assassin, the
medical treatment the president is alleged to have received after
he was shot, and the significance of his funeral for the American
public. The author provides an in-depth analysis of the science
behind the assassination, a discussion of the medical care Lincoln
received at the time he was shot and the treatment he would have
received if he were shot today, and the impact of his death on his
contemporaries and the American public. The book examines Lincoln's
fatalism and his unbridled ambition in terms of empirical
psychological science rather than the fanciful psychoanalytical
explanations that often characterize Lincoln psychohistories. The
medical chapters challenge the long-standing description of
Lincoln's last hours and examine the debate about whether Lincoln's
doctors inadvertently doomed him. Challenges the long-standing
account of Lincoln's last hours and examines the debate about
whether his doctor prolonged or shortened his life Sheds light on
the crime with an in-depth analysis of ballistics and detailed
forensics information Features a new interpretation of why Booth
shot Lincoln
In this facsimile of a handwritten leather-bound journal, Pierre
Berge, the longtime partner of Yves Saint Laurent, remembers their
life together In this handwritten, personal memoir, Pierre Berge
recalls his life with Yves Saint Laurent in Morocco. He remembers
their arrival in Marrakech in 1966, their first home purchased
together, and their exploration of Morocco and its fascinating
light. He remembers friends-Loulou de La Falaise, Fernando Sanchez,
Andy Warhol, Betty Catroux-who, like them, chose to live in
Morocco, or who accompanied them on their adventure. He awakens the
past with personal photographs, many published for the first time,
and drawings and watercolors by Lawrence Mynott that evoke the
magic of Morocco. This moving, intimate book, bound to resemble a

the celebrated designer, revealing how Morocco's vibrant culture
and extraordinary landscapes inspired some of YSL's greatest
collections.

Focusing on the Supreme Court as an integral part of the
policy-making process, Susan Lawrence examines how a change in who
has access to the Court, and the nature of the institutions that
structure that access, has affected its agenda setting and
doctrinal development. In her analysis of cases sponsored by the
Legal Services Program (LSP) before the Supreme Court during the
1966 through 1974 terms, she explores the effect of this agency in
creating a voice for the poor in the judicial policy-making
process. The Court's response to cases presented by the LSP--as
exemplified in its decisions to invalidate residency requirements
for welfare recipients (Shapiro v. Thompson, 1969) but uphold
maximum family grants (Dandridge v. Williams, 1970)--is described
as emerging from a timely combination of new litigant claims,
available legal bases, and judicial values and role conceptions,
all of which were shaped by the political climate of the era.
Lawrence convincingly argues that litigation before the Court is a
powerful method of political participation for the disadvantaged.
