Thomas Aquinas: Disputed Questions on the Virtues (Hardcover): Thomas Aquinas Thomas Aquinas: Disputed Questions on the Virtues (Hardcover)
Thomas Aquinas; Edited by E. M. Atkins, Thomas Williams
R2,705 R2,458 Discovery Miles 24 580 Save R247 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The great medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas (1224/6-1274) was Dominican regent master in theology at the University of Paris, where he presided over a series of questions - academic debates - on ethical topics. This volume offers new translations of disputed questions on the nature of virtues in general, the fundamental or 'cardinal' virtues of practical wisdom, justice, courage, and temperateness, the divinely bestowed virtues of hope and charity, and the practical question of how, when and why one should rebuke a 'brother' for wrongdoing. The introduction explains how Aquinas's theory of virtue fits into his ethics as a whole, and it illuminates Aquinas's views by explaining the institutional and intellectual context in which these disputed questions were debated.

Augustine: Political Writings (Hardcover): Augustine Augustine: Political Writings (Hardcover)
Augustine; Edited by E. M. Atkins, R. J. Dodaro

This collection brings together thirty-five letters and sermons of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo from 396-430 AD, that deal with political matters. The letters and sermons are both practical and principled and treat many essential themes in Augustine's thought, including the responsibilities of citizenship, the relationship between the church and secular authority, religious coercion, and war and peace. These texts complement Augustine's classic The City of God, and give students direct insight into the political and social world of late antiquity with which Augustine was immediately involved.

Cicero: On Duties (Paperback, New): Marcus Tullius Cicero Cicero: On Duties (Paperback, New)
Marcus Tullius Cicero; Edited by M. T. Griffin, E. M. Atkins
R805 Discovery Miles 8 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

De Officiis (On Duties) was Cicero's last philosophical work. In it he made use of Greek thought to formulate the political and ethical values of Roman Republican society as he saw them, revealing incidentally a great deal about actual practice. Writing at a time of political crisis after the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44BC, when it was not clear how much of the old Republican order would survive, Cicero here handed on the insights of an elder statesman, adept at political theory and practice, to his son, and through him, to the younger generation in general. De Officiis has often been treated merely as a key to the lost Greek works that Cicero used. This volume aims to render De Officiis, which was such an important influence on later masterpieces of Western political thought, more intelligible by explaining its relation to its own time and place. A wholly new translation is accompanied by a lucid introduction and all the standard features of Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought, including a chronology, select bibliography, and notes on the vocabulary and significant individuals mentioned in the text.
