Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names is a unique and momentous
on-going scholarly project. Its intention is to provide those
engaged in the study of the Greek world with a list, accompanied by
full, itemized evidence, of any personal name known from
literature, inscriptions, papyri, vases, coins, and other objects.
The chronological range is from the earliest period (though
excluding Mycenean names) to about the seventh century AD; the
arrangement, both with each of the alphabetically arranged entries
and in the work as a whole, is regional. This first volume in the
series covers the Aegean Islands, Cyprus, and Cyrenaica. Volume II,
which has now also been published, covers Athens.
This book demonstrates how horror films of the 1930s and 1940s
reflected specific events and personalities of the era, most
notably the Great Depression and World War II. Beginning with
""Dracula"" and ""Frankenstein"" (1931), it relates the many ways
that horror films and society intersected: Franklin D. Roosevelt's
skepticism toward conventional wisdom and the public's distrust of
experts was mirrored in ""Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"" and ""Murders
in the Rue Morgue""; the freaks in Tod Browning's 1932 film of the
same name revolted against the powerful people of the circus, much
like the Bonus Army protested the sufferings of the Depression;
King Kong's rampage on New York personified the anti - New York
sentiment in the nation at large; Lon Chaney Jr.'s ""Wolf Man""
symbolized the experience of his creator, Curt Siodmak, as a Jewish
refugee from Nazi Germany.
The Cricket Chronicles presents an extensive integrated unit of
study focused on that familiar insect-the cricket. Teachers are
given a complete guide and reproducible worksheets for elementary
and middle school students. With more than 30 different activities
on crickets, students learn science content and skills including: *
Taxonomy * Anatomy * Ecology * Marking and recapturing techniques
for estimating population size * Reading biological distribution
maps * Caring for living organisms in the classroom Many activities
involve hands-on science investigations; others incorporate
reading, writing, and using graphic organizers to compare crickets
to kids and other insects. This book includes learning logs to help
students complete all activities and assist the teacher in
assessment. Technological applications are also included such as
cricket songs, which can be downloaded and played in the classroom.
Everything a teacher needs to know or do to successfully teach this
unit is covered in The Cricket Chronicles, which is designed for
classrooms of any size and is an original and fun alternative to
the typical science curriculum. See also:Challenging Science and

Updated versions of papers delivered to a 1988 meeting of food
technologists in Dallas, plus a few added chapters, survey the
instruments and methodologies available for the instrumental
analysis of chemical, physical, and microbiological aspects of
food, especially in quality assurance and control
Primary bile duct cancers are rare and generally aggressive
entities. Historically, this disease was managed exclusively with
surgical therapy with few long-term survivors. However, with
improvements in chemotherapeutics, targeted therapy, interventional
radiology techniques and development of alternative surgical
approaches, treatment has moved to the utilization of a
multidisciplinary care team employing multimodality treatments
which has finally led to improvement in outcomes. In this book,
Chapter One examines symptoms and the current state of medical and
surgical management of bile duct cancer, while Chapter Two
discusses the clinical aspects of care of extrahepatic biliary
cancers with an emphasis on diagnosis and management. Chapter Three
assesses the risk of bile duct cancer among beneficiaries of The
Health Insurance Society of Printing Industry (HISPI) using
diagnosis-procedure-combination (DPC) data in comparison with
general population. Chapter Four concludes with a summary of
results for chemotherapy and targeted therapies.
A Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter of a dilute
gas of weakly interacting bosons confined in an external potential
and cooled to temperatures very near to absolute zero (0 K or
-273.15 DegreesC). Under such conditions, a large fraction of the
bosons occupy the lowest quantum state of the external potential,
at which point quantum effects become apparent on a macroscopic
scale. This book gathers and presents research in this field
including a new approach to Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates,
elliptic vortices in self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensates and
matter wave dark solitions in optical superlatices, as well as the
mathematical description of the effective behavior of
one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with defects.
The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names offers scholars a fully documented listing of all known personal names from the ancient Greek world, drawing on all available evidence from the earliest times to about AD 600. The present volume, III.A, presents the onomastic material from the Peloponnese, Western Greece, Sicily, and Magna Graecia, continuing the series begun with Volume I, The Aegean Islands, Cyprus, and Cyrenaica, and Volume II, Attica.
This book provides a complete conspectus of the evidence for every
identifiable resident of Athens in antiquity, except for foreigners
whose ethnic is known. It is thus both a prosopography and an
onomasticon in one. In the former capacity, it is the successor to
the distinguished Prosopographia Attica of J. Kirchner, published
in 1903; in the latter it provides the Athenian contribution to the
Lexicon of Greek Personal Names series, edited by P. M. Fraser and
E. Matthews. The evidence for the denizens of Athens in antiquity
is substantially epigraphical in nature and most of the references
in this work are to inscriptions. This is particularly so for the
Hellenistic and Roman periods, when the literary sources all but
fail. Since Kirchner completed his magisterial work, excavations,
especially in the Athenian Agora, have brought to light a massive
treasure trove of inscriptions. This volume incorporates the
evidence from these new discoveries, brings up to date the (now)
antiquated forms of references which render Kirchner's work so hard
to use, and also includes the evidence from the Roman period. This
volume will serve as an invaluable tool for scholars of ancient
history and epigraphy, bringing together for the first time in
ninety years the evidence for every individual of Ancient Athens
who is known by name from the early Classical to the late Roman
period.
Empower your students as they reimagine the world around them
through mathematics Culturally relevant mathematics teaching
engages and empowers students, helping them learn and understand
math more deeply and make connections to themselves, their
communities, and the world around them. The mathematics task
provides opportunities for a direct pathway to this goal; however,
how can you find, adapt, and implement math tasks that build
powerful learners? Engaging in Culturally Relevant Math Tasks helps
teachers to design and refine inspiring mathematics learning
experiences driven by the kind of high-quality and culturally
relevant mathematics tasks that connect students to their world.
With the goal of inspiring all students to see themselves as doers
of mathematics, this book provides intensive, in-the-moment
guidance and practical classroom tools that empower educators to
shape culturally relevant experiences while systematically building
tasks that are standards-based. It includes A pathway for moving
through the process of asking, imagining, planning, creating, and
improving culturally relevant math tasks. Tools and strategies for
designing culturally relevant math tasks that preservice, novice,
and veteran teachers can use to grow their practice day by day.
Research-based teaching practices seen through the lens of
culturally relevant instruction that help students develop deep
conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, fluency, and
application in all K-5 mathematical content. Examples, milestones,
opportunities for reflection, and discussion questions guide
educators to strengthen their classroom practices, and to reimagine
math instruction in response. This book is for any educator who
wants to teach mathematics in a more authentic, inclusive, and
meaningful way, and it is especially beneficial for teachers whose
students are culturally different from them.
This introductory undergraduate textbook provides a concise, clear and affordable overview of parasite biology for students and nonspecialists, preparing them for more technical and detailed literature. Using examples from all groups of animal parasites, the text considers the various stages of a parasite's life cycle from finding hosts to surviving within the host. The author discusses the significance of damage caused by parasites and approaches to control, giving the book a well-rounded scope for those new to the subject or desiring a review of key points. A key feature of the book is its comparative rather than systematic approach. Suitable for all introductory parasitology courses in biology, zoology and human and veterinary medicine.
