Two or three years ago the editor of "Lippincott's Magazine" asked
me, with many others, to take part in the very interesting
"experience meeting" begun in the pages of that enterprising
periodical. I gave my consent without much thought of the effort
involved, but as time passed, felt slight inclination to comply
with the request. There seemed little to say of interest to the
general public, and I was distinctly conscious of a certain sense
of awkwardness in writing about myself at all. The question, Why
should I? always confronted me. When this request was again
repeated early in the current year, I resolved at least to keep my
promise. This is done with less reluctance now, for the reason that
floating through the press I meet with paragraphs concerning myself
that are incorrect, and often absurdly untrue. These literary and
personal notes, together with many questioning letters, indicate a
certain amount of public interest, and I have concluded that it may
be well to give the facts to those who care to know them.
Where are the children? "They can't be far away," replied my wife,
looking up from her preparations for supper. "Bobsey was here a
moment ago. As soon as my back's turned he's out and away. I
haven't seen Merton since he brought his books from school, and I
suppose Winnie is upstairs with the Daggetts." "I wish, my dear,
you could keep the children at home more," I said, a little
petulantly. "I wish you would go and find them for me now, and
to-morrow take my place-for just one day." "Well, well," I said,
with a laugh that had no mirth in it; "only one of your wishes
stands much chance of being carried out. I'll find the children now
if I can without the aid of the police. Mousie, do you feel
stronger to-night?"
When Madge Alden was seventeen years of age an event occurred which
promised to be the misfortune of her life. At first she was almost
overwhelmed and knew not what to do. She was but a young and
inexperienced girl, and for a year or more had been regarded as an
invalid.
