Karl Bonhoeffer, geboren wenige Jahre vor der Grllndung des Deutschen Reiches, gestorben im ersten Jahr des "Kalten Krieges", hat seiner Familie eine Autobiographie hinterlassen. Bonhoeffer hatte nicht an eine Ver- offentlichung gedacht. Jedoch die Lebensgeschichte eines Professors, der im Alter von 36 Jahren Kraepelin-Nachfolger in Heidelberg wurde, der bald danach Wernickes Lehr- stuhl in Breslau ubernahm und zwei Jahre vor dem Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges zum Ordinarius in Berlin ernannt wurde, eine solche Chronik, schien uns, diirfte der Offentlichkeit doch nicht vorenthalten werden. Der stillen Gelassenheit, in der Bon- hoeffer wahrend des Kaiserreiches, wahrend der Weimarer Republik und in der Hitler- Zeit der Wahrheit der Forschung lebte und diese verteidigte, entspricht auch der gleich- maBig erzahlende Ton in der Selbstdarstellung. Von dem Verfasser selbst ist unmittel- bar wenig die Rede. Er zeigt sich dem Leser durch das Medium seiner Welt, durch die Vorfahren, durch die "fast mystische lebensentscheidende" Begegnung mit seiner spate- ren Frau, durch das Schicksal der Familie und Freunde, durch die Probleme seines Beru- fes und die Personlichkeiten, mit denen er in engere BerUhrung kam, durch die poli- tischen Umstande und Ereignisse seiner Zeit.
