Energy Transitions in the Middle East - Challenges and Opportunities: Katherine Wolff, Karen E. Young Energy Transitions in the Middle East - Challenges and Opportunities
Katherine Wolff, Karen E. Young
R2,339 Discovery Miles 23 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How do Middle East energy transitions fit into international energy markets? In this book, energy analysts, geopolitical experts and specialists of political economy examine the new energy potential in the Middle East. The particular focus surrounds how the region’s access to finance, combined with the new global regulations and considerations of economic development, shape the region’s energy transitions overall. The Middle East is revealed to be a key site of new energy production, sharing and transmission as well as technology innovation. At the same time, the authors examine the variables that determine the success in each country and energy source, including the advantages that hydrocarbon producers will have in renewables and transition fuels, and the risk that these might slow down the energy transition overall. In doing so, the book situates the energy transition in the Middle East in a broader context of economic development, financing models, and regulations, and explains how this context interacts with the development of new energy sources. Energy Transitions in the Middle East is an account of the challenges Middle Eastern states will face in navigating the global energy transition, as well as their key areas of opportunity.

Ethel E. Young, Jerome Wilson
R683 Discovery Miles 6 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about the unique educational experience of an African American segregated Catholic school in Mississippi from 1910 -1975. The school was founded and administered by nuns and priests from religious orders founded in Germany. This account focuses on the period between the 1940s to the 1960s which included a description and historical perspective of how despite the American apartheid system in operation in Mississippi at that time, one Catholic school with committed teachers and dedicated parents was successful in educating African American children. The story recounted here is not about the despair of growing up in Mississippi but about how a quality educational experience yields great outcomes when the goals of parents, teachers and the educational programs are intertwined. The significance of this book can be found in the power of integrating sound teaching, high expectations and strong parental support. Lessons learned from this educational experience has implications for the effective education of today's African American children as well as a model of success for broader and more heterogeneous student populations.

Two accounts of the westward pioneers to Colorado
Dangers of the Trail in 1865 by Charles E. Young
The Story of a Pioneer by V. Devinny
This book contains two books, gathered here for their common subject-and value reading-concerning the 'March of Destiny'-the inexorable movement of pioneers to claim the unsettled lands of the great American continent. Trudging alongside 'prairie schooners' these brave, ordinary men, women and children stepped into the unknown to create a better life for themselves and forge a new nation in the process. Many would fall by the wayside, victims to disease, accidents, starvation, banditry, raids by hostile Indian tribes or simply through exhaustion as a result of pitiless journeying through hundreds of miles of difficult terrain beset by every force of nature the wilderness could throw against them. When they arrived at their 'promised land' there began the difficult task of making a living against many of the same obstacles. These are two accounts, recorded for posterity, by those who prevailed to reach and live in Colorado.

CONSEQUITER QUODCUNQUE PETIT, CONSTANTIA DILLENGENTIA ET COR IMMOBILE SANS PEUR

Freemasonry is worldwide, to know and understand in one country is to know and understand in another although there may be some language barriers, the mode of recognition is the same.

According to Modern Scholars, and Historians, Modern Freemasonry officially began in London, England in 1717 at the Goose and Gridiron Tavern.

There has been dispute among Masonic Historians that Freemasonry origins date back to the beginning of mankind. There are theories which date back to Adam and Eve, Solomon in the building of the Temple in Jerusalem, the building of the Tower of Babel, Alexander the Great, Leonidus king of Spartica, Noah in the building of the Ark, the Ancient Mysteries, and so on. Whatever the case may be, Freemasonry as it is today is based on all these theories, whether true, fables, or just conjured stories, they are the baseline for what we know today as Freemasonry.

According to Scholars, and Historians, Ancient Craft Masonry commenced with the creation of the world, calling it Ano Lucis (A.L.), "in the year of light" 4000 years prior to the Christian era, thus, 4000 plus 2004 = A.L. 6004. Royal Arch Masonry dates from the year the second temple was commenced by Zerubbabel, Anno Inventionis (A.I.), "in the year of discovery," 530 years prior to the Christian era, thus, 530 plus 2004 = A.I. 2534. Order of the High Priesthood date from the year of the blessing of Abraham by the High Priest Melchizedek, Anno Benedictionis (A.B.), "in the year of the blessing," 1913 years prior to the Christian era, thus 1913 plus 2004 = A.B. 3917. Royal and Select Masters date from the year in which the temple of King Solomon was completed Anno Depositions (A. Dep.) "In the year of deposit,"1000 years prior to the Christian era, thus 1000 plus 2004 = A. Dep. 3004. Knights Templar date from the year of the organization of the ancient order, Anno Ordinis (A.O.), "in the year of the Order," 1118 years into the Christian era, thus 2004 - 1118 = A.O. 886.

Landmark Essays on Rhetorical Invention in Writing - Volume 8 (Paperback): Richard E Young, Yameng Liu Landmark Essays on Rhetorical Invention in Writing - Volume 8 (Paperback)
Richard E Young, Yameng Liu
R870 Discovery Miles 8 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the process of assembling this collection, the editors quickly realized that no group of a dozen and a half articles can adequately represent the developments in modern rhetorical invention, even when the choices are restricted to articles on invention in writing. The articles selected for inclusion are probably best seen as synecdochic -- as representatives, albeit particularly notable ones, for whole categories of efforts to address particular questions associated with invention in writing. Each marks in the development of modern invention, if not the first major expression of the position, at least an especially significant moment in an on-going conceptual process. One useful way of thinking about these papers and their relationships is to see them as representing basic issues that run like motifs through the recent history of rhetorical invention, in particular invention in writing.
This collection presents a heteroglossia of perspectives on, models of, and insights into invention in writing. As such, the possible relationships among the articles that can be considered with profit are numerous and varied. The landmarks in this collection are not merely fossils nor is the inquiry into invention in writing a kind of antiquarian exercise. Each of the articles has useful things to say, stimulating discussions that are ongoing today. All combine to challenge scholars to continue what they began -- a copious, diverse, and fruitful effort to reinvent "inventio."

R475 R439 Discovery Miles 4 390 Save R36 (8%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Amid ethnic violence, political corruption, and petty professional intrigue, an artist tries to live free of lies. Set during the last years of the Soviet Union, Stone Dreams tells the story of Azerbaijani actor Sadai Sadygly, who lands in a Baku hospital while trying to protect an elderly Armenian man from a gang of young Azerbaijanis. Something of a modern-day Don Quixote, Sadai has long battled the hatred and corruption he observes in contemporary Azerbaijani society. Wandering in and out of consciousness, he revisits his hometown, the ancient village of Aylis, where Christian Armenians and Muslim Azeris once lived peacefully together, and dreams of making a pilgrimage of atonement to Armenia. Stone Dreams is a searing, painful meditation on the ability of art and artists-of individual human beings-to make change in the world.

Conditionality & Coercion - Electoral clientelism in Eastern Europe (Hardcover): Isabela Mares, Lauren E. Young Conditionality & Coercion - Electoral clientelism in Eastern Europe (Hardcover)
Isabela Mares, Lauren E. Young
R2,838 Discovery Miles 28 380 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In many recent democracies, candidates compete for office using illegal strategies to influence voters. In Hungary and Romania, local actors including mayors and bureaucrats offer access to social policy benefits to voters who offer to support their preferred candidates, and they threaten others with the loss of a range of policy and private benefits for voting the "wrong" way. These quid pro quo exchanges are often called clientelism. How can politicians and their accomplices get away with such illegal campaigning in otherwise democratic, competitive elections? When do they rely on the worst forms of clientelism that involve threatening voters and manipulating public benefits? Conditionality and Coercion: Electoral Clientelism in Eastern Europe uses a mixed method approach to understand how illegal forms of campaigning including vote buying and electoral coercion persist in two democratic countries in the European Union. It argues that we must disaggregate clientelistic strategies based on whether they use public or private resources, and whether they involve positive promises or negative threats and coercion. We document that the type of clientelistic strategies that candidates and brokers use varies systematically across localities based on their underlying social coalitions. We also show that voters assess and sanction different forms of clientelism in different ways. Voters glean information about politicians' personal characteristics and their policy preferences from the clientelistic strategies these candidates deploy. Most voters judge candidates who use clientelism harshly. So how does clientelism, including its most odious coercive forms, persist in democratic systems? This book suggests that politicians can get away with clientelism by using forms of it that are in line with the policy preferences of constituencies whose votes they need. Clientelistic and programmatic strategies are not as distinct as previous have argued. Oxford Studies in Democratization is a series for scholars and students of comparative politics and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on the comparative study of the democratization process that accompanied the decline and termination of the cold war. The geographical focus of the series is primarily Latin America, the Caribbean, Southern and Eastern Europe, and relevant experiences in Africa and Asia. The series editor is Laurence Whitehead, Senior Research Fellow, Nuffield College, University of Oxford.

Reading Empirical Research Studies - The Rhetoric of Research (Paperback, New): John R. Hayes, Richard E Young, Michele L.... Reading Empirical Research Studies - The Rhetoric of Research (Paperback, New)
John R. Hayes, Richard E Young, Michele L. Matchett, Maggie McCaffrey, Cynthia Cochran
R1,527 Discovery Miles 15 270 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For the most part, those who teach writing and administer writing programs do not conduct research on writing. Perhaps more significantly, they do not often read the research done by others because effective reading of articles on empirical research requires special knowledge and abilities. By and large, those responsible for maintaining and improving writing instruction cannot -- without further training -- access work that could help them carry out their responsibilities more effectively. This book is designed as a text in graduate programs that offer instruction in rhetoric and composition. Its primary educational purposes are: * to provide models and critical methods designed to improve the reading of scientific discourse * to provide models of effective research designs and projects appropriate to those learning to do empirical research in rhetoric. Aiming to cultivate new attitudes toward empirical research, this volume encourages an appreciation of the rhetorical tradition that informs the production and critical reading of empirical studies. The book should also reinforce a slowly growing realization in English studies that empirical methods are not inherently alien to the humanities, rather that methods extend the power of humanist researchers trying to solve the problems of their discipline.
