This classic work has been a unique resource for thousands of
mathematicians, scientists and engineers since its first appearance
in 1902. Never out of print, its continuing value lies in its
thorough and exhaustive treatment of special functions of
mathematical physics and the analysis of differential equations
from which they emerge. The book also is of historical value as it
was the first book in English to introduce the then modern methods
of complex analysis. This fifth edition preserves the style and
content of the original, but it has been supplemented with more
recent results and references where appropriate. All the formulas
have been checked and many corrections made. A complete
bibliographical search has been conducted to present the references
in modern form for ease of use. A new foreword by Professor S.J.
Patterson sketches the circumstances of the book's genesis and
explains the reasons for its longevity. A welcome addition to any
mathematician's bookshelf, this will allow a whole new generation
to experience the beauty contained in this text.
Originally published in 1907 as number seven in the Cambridge
Tracts in Mathematics and Mathematical Physics series, this book
provides a concise account regarding the theory of optical
instruments. The text was written with the aim of leading 'directly
from the first elements of Optics to those parts of the subject
which are of greatest importance to workers with optical
instruments'. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest
in optics, physics and mathematics.
This book is a facsimile reprint and may contain imperfections such
as marks, notations, marginalia and flawed pages.
There can be few books on mathematical mechanics as famous as this, a work that forms a comprehensive account of all the classical results of analytical dynamics.

E T Whittaker was an early 20th century Mathematician. He is
credited with pioneering research in special functions. Whittaker
was a member of the Royal Society. He was professor of Astronomy at
the University of Dublin and Professor of Mathematics at the
University of Edinburgh. A Course of Modern Analysis was the first
book in English to present the theory of functions of a complex
variable at an undergraduate level. This book was instrumental in
the study of such functions and their expansions as well as the
study of special functions and their related differential
equations.
