One of the principal threads of Mr. Walcott's clever story, The Open Door, corresponds remarkably with the theft, and remarkable recovery of a famous painting by Millet, valued at ten thousand dollars, from a museum in San Francisco. The scene of the novel is also set in San Francisco, but since the manuscript was submitted well before the theft, Mr. Walcott cannot be accused of imitating the facts. This is a really good detective story; goodness in the case of a detective story denoting a striking plot, a baffling mystery and interest that grows more intense with each succeeding chapter.
