Translated from the Russian in 1928, this and the second volume of
the same title give an invaluable picture of what the Russian
leader Joseph Stalin understood by Leninism. Building on the
pamphlet Foundations of Leninism, (which forms the first part of
this book) the work presents a unified and complete work on the
problems of Leninism and socialist construction as they were
manifested in the 1920s, as well as discussion of the October
Revolution and the relationship of the USSR and the West in the
years following the First World War.

First published in English in 1929, this is a reissue of Otto
Ruhle's comprehensive biography of Karl Marx. Written by a leading
Marxist and key figure within the German Labour movement, this is
an exceptionally detailed and well-researched study which sets
Marx's life and work firmly within its social and historical
context before examining in depth the major events of his life and
the writings for which he has become such an influential figure in
modern political philosophy. The final chapter offers an appraisal
of both the man and his work, as Ruhle summarises why he believes
Marx was a genius.
First published in English 1929, this is a reisssue of the
nineteenth edition of Othmar Spann's classic history of economic
thought, which is stongly influenced by the German Romantic
tradition. Spann intended the work to serve as both history of
economic thought and a critique of the main theories and systems of
poltical economy, analysing the basic problems of economics in the
light of the evolution of economic theory. His study encapsulates
everything from pre-mercantile economics through to the political
economy of the early twentieth century, encompassing such diverse
subjects as the physiocratic system, the development of German
political economy and the evolution of socialism.

The life of the great Portuguese explorer who dared to sail beyond
the horizon The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521)
is one of the most famous navigators in history-he was the first
man to sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, and led the
first voyage to circumnavigate the globe, although he was killed en
route in a battle with natives in the Phillipines. In this
biography, Zweig brings to life the Age of Discovery by telling the
tale of one of the era's most daring adventurers. In typically
flowing and elegant prose he takes us on a fascinating journey of
discovery ourselves. Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was born in Vienna,
into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and
Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a
biographer. Zweig travelled widely, living in Salzburg between the
wars, and was an international bestseller with a string of hugely
popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and
Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he moved to London, where
he wrote his only novel Beware of Pity. He later moved on to Bath,
taking British citizenship after the outbreak of the Second World
War. With the fall of France in 1940 Zweig left Britain for New
York, before settling in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were
found dead in an apparent double suicide. Much of his work is
available from Pushkin Press.

From the moment of her birth to her death on the scaffold, Mary
Stuart spent her life embroiled in power struggles that shook the
foundations of Renaissance Europe. Revered by some as the rightful
Queen of England, reviled by others as a murderous adultress, her
long and fascinating rivalry with her cousin Elizabeth I led
ultimately to her downfall. This classic biography, by one of the
most popular writers of the twentieth century, breathes life into
the character of one of history's most remarkable women, and turns
her tale into a story of passion and plotting as gripping as any
novel.
First published in 1922, as part of the Cambridge Historical
Series, this book presents the English translation of a German
original written by Swiss historian Wilhelm Oechsli (1851-1919).
The text gives a broad overview of the history of Switzerland,
beginning with the separation of the Swiss from the Holy Roman
Empire and moving through to the establishment of Switzerland as a
federal state. A comprehensive bibliography is also included. This
is a detailed and highly readable book that will be of value to
anyone with an interest in historiography and perspectives on the
history of Switzerland.

Bringing to life one of the most complex characters in European
history Stefan Zweig based his biography of Marie Antoinette, who
became the Queen of France at the age of fifteen, on the
correspondence between her and her mother, and her great love the
Count Axel von Fersen. Zweig analyzes the chemistry of a woman's
soul from her intimate pleasures to her public suffering as a Queen
under the weight of misfortune and history. Zweig describes Marie
Antoinette in the King's bedroom, in the enchanted and extravagant
world of the Trianon, and with her children. And in his account of
'The Revolution', he describes her resolve during the failed escape
to varennes, her imprisonment in the Conciergerie and her final
tragic destiny under the guillotine. Zweig's account has been the
definitive biography of Marie Antoinette since its publication,
inspiring Antonia Fraser and the recent film adaptation. Stefan
