Why do some new export activities succeed while others do not? Why are some not even attempted? In this book, distinguished research teams analyze eleven cases of new export endeavors in six Latin American countries to learn how export pioneers are born and jump-start a virtuous process leading to economic transformation. The case studies range from blueberries in Argentina and fresh cut flowers in Colombia to aircraft in Brazil and software in Uruguay. They put to the test two conjectures: that costly burdens to entrepreneurial self-discovery due to imitation by competitors deter would-be pioneers (the low appropriation hypothesis advanced by Harvard s Hausmann and Rodrik) and that new export activities are a complex enterprise that only reach fruition when the innovative contributions of many actors are somehow provided jointly (the failure of coordination hypothesis). These case studies offer many examples in which cooperation proved absolutely vital to export success, while problems of appropriation appeared less critical. Interestingly, in solving coordination problems, innovators frequently mitigated problems of appropriation. Coordination is difficult, however, and, as the tales of these export pioneers suggest, industrial policy has an important role to play in facilitating it."

This book integrates three decades of owl monkey research conducted since 1994 when the first and only book focused on the genus Aotus was published. Owl monkeys were one of the least understood primates then; knowledge from wild populations was only beginning to emerge and there had been some substantial research in colonies of captive individuals. The situation is very different today. Research on captive owl monkeys has continued to develop, with valuable contributions to the health and medical sciences. And there is now enough information on the behavior, ecology, conservation, and biogeography of the genus that merits a synthesis. The book synthesizes new field data on the biogeography, behavioral ecology, circadian biology, population biology and demography spanning their entire continental range from Panamá to Argentina. It includes theoretical perspectives drawn from evolutionary biology, biological anthropology, anatomy, morphology and physiology, genetics, endocrinology and conservation biology to examine a specic set of adaptations that have allowed owl monkeys to exploit the nocturnal niche while functioning in a pair-living sexually monogamous system with remarkable patterns of paternal care. The author, with 30 years of research experience with both captive and wild primates, has directed the longest project on any owl monkey species and has conducted extensive original research on their biology, adaptive radiation and behavioral ecology. His expertise and published record on both wild populations and laboratory colonies makes this book one of a kind; it presents information from both captive and wild primates and explores questions through the integration of both approaches. Stereotypies in captive animals have been defined as repetitive, invariant patterns of behavior that serve no obvious goal or function. Stereotypies are commonly attributed to boredom or stress, and are typically "treated" with environmental enrichment. These enrichment items often includes food presented at times other than regular feedings. This thesis applies a "foraging loop" hypothesis to the behaviors of contrasting species of marine mammal carnivores; polar bears and walruses. Polar bears in the wild spend the majority of each day traveling to locate prey; captive polar bears spend several hours a day in locomotor stereotypies preceding a large feed. In contrast, walruses in the wild graze in beds of mollusks on the ocean floor, using their flippers, vibrissae, and mouths to locate and consume mollusks. Captive walruses spend the majority of their day circle swimming, mouthing, and sucking inedible objects in their enclosure. The results of six experiments allowed us to conclude that both species' stereotypies were attempts to forage in their captive environment, and that allowing these animals to forage in a species-typical manner effectively decreased those stereotypies.
