The King was cold. The Duke had to wait twenty minutes, the Duke of
Cumberland being with the King. However, I believe this delay may
only have originated in a necessary change of dress on His
Majesty's part, as he was sitting for his picture in a Highland
dress. The Duke saw a large plaid bonnet in the room, and he
believes the King had still on plaid stockings. The business of the
restoration was finished in ten minutes, when the conversation
flagged, and the Duke was rising to go away.

Since Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Gulf War veterans have
expressed concerns about health effects that could be associated
with their deployment and service during the war. Although similar
concerns were raised after other military operations, the Gulf War
deployment focused national attention on the potential, but
uncertain, relationship between the presence of chemical and
biological (CB) agents and other harmful agents in theater and
health symptoms reported by military personnel. Strategies to
Protect the Health of Deployed U.S. Forces which is one of the four
two-year studies, examines the detection and tracking of exposures
of deployed personnel to multiple harmful agents.

The Dark Side of Media and Technology: A 21st Century Guide to
Media and Technological Literacy is Herculean in its effort to
survey for landmines in a rapidly changing media landscape. The
book identifies four dark outcomes related to media and technology
use in the 21st century, and balances the dark side with four
points of light that are the keys to taking ownership of a media-
and technology-saturated world. The text contains an impressive
list of multi-disciplinary experts and cutting-edge researchers who
approach 25 separate dark side issues with concise, highly readable
chapters, replete with unique recommendations for navigating our
mediated present and future. The Dark Side of Media and Technology
is grounded in theory and current research, but possesses an appeal
similar to a page-turning dystopian novel; as a result, this volume
should be of interest to scholars, students, and curious
lay-readers alike. It should be the "go-to" text for anyone who is
interested in learning what the research says about how we use
media and technology, as well as how media and technology use us.

This double volume contains two masterpieces of the Czech composer
Leos Janacek. Jenufa was the opera which finally brought him
international recognition - and, with it, fame at home. Based on
Ostrovsky's The Storm, Katya Kabanova contains wonderful music
inspired by the composer's love for a much younger woman. The
scores are discussed by Arnold Whittall, and the background sources
are variously introduced by social and literary historians. John
Tyrell comments on an important letter about the genesis of Katya;
Sir Charles Mackerras describes his work as an interpreter and
advocate of this brilliantly original and dramatic music. Contents:
A National Composer Jaroslav Krejci; Drama into Libretto, Karel
Brusak; The Challenge from Within: Janacek's Musico-dramatic
Mastery, Arnold Whittall; Janacek and Czech Realism, Jan Smaczny;
Jenufa: Libretto by Leos Janacek; Jenufa: English translation by
Otakar Kraus and Edward Downes; A Russian Heart of Darkness, Alex
de Jonge; Janacek's forgotten commentary on 'Katya Kabanova', John
Tyrrell; Katya Kabanova: Libretto by Leos Janacek; Katya Kabanova:
English translation by Norman Tucker; Janacek's Operas -
Preparation and Performance, Charles Mackerras
Richard Strauss's opera is performed at the Royal Opera House, by
Maria Ewing and an international cast. This production was directed
by Derek Bailey in association with Sir Peter Hall.
Three of Verdi's most popular operas, all from the stage of the
Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. Bryn Terfel takes the
title role in Graham Vick's riotous production of 'Falstaff',
conducted by Bernard Haitink. David McVuicar's hedonistic
production of 'Rigoletto' stars Marcello Alvarez, Paolo Gavanello
and Christine Schafer under the baton of Sir Edward Downes. Jose
Cura and Dmitri Hvorostovsky lead the cast in Elijah Moshinsky's
blazingly passionate 'Il Trovatore', conducted by Carlo Rizzi.
