In the year 2089, Earth has been under the dominance of a race of aliens for an entire century, enslaved via a mind-controlling device which is implanted in humans at the age of 14. Young Will Parker (John Shackley) is determined not to be 'capped', and with his cousin Henry (Jim Parker) goes on the run, aiming to find sanctuary with the 'free men' who still inhabit the mountains of Switzerland. En route the pair meet up with Jean-Paul - also known as 'Beanpole' - and live in constant fear of the 'Tripods' - the gigantic three-legged travel machines in which the alien overseers patrol the highways of England.

In 1554, England is ruled by the fervently Catholic Queen Mary (Kathy Burke), whose persecution of Protestants even extends to her own half-sister, Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett). When Mary dies, Elizabeth succeeds to the throne, but finds her country under threat from the Scots, French and Spanish. Although conducting an affair with Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester (Joseph Fiennes), Elizabeth is urged by her advisors to wed and produce an heir. Meanwhile, plots against her are being hatched by the Catholic bishops, and Elizabeth soon becomes the target of an assassination attempt. Cate Blanchett was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar and won a BAFTA in recognition of her performance.

In 'The King's Demons' (1983), the renegade Time Lord forces Kamelion (Gerald Flood) to pose as King John in 13th century England. 'Planet of Fire' (1983) sees the Doctor (Davison) and Turlough (Mark Strickson) arriving in Lanzarote on Earth to investigate the transmission of an unusual signal that turns out to be emanating from a mysterious alien artefact.
