Essays on the connections between politics and society in the
middle ages, showing their interdependence. Christine Carpenter's
influential work on late-medieval English society aspires to
encompass a wide spectrum of human experience. Her vision of
"total" history embeds the study of politics in a multi-dimensional
social frameworkwhich ranges from mentalities and ideology to
economy and geography. This collection of essays celebrates
Professor Carpenter's achievement by drawing attention to the
social underpinning of political culture; the articles reflectthe
range of her interests, chronologically from the thirteenth century
to the sixteenth, and thematically from ideology and culture,
through government and its officials, the nobility, gentry and
yeomanry, the law and the church, to local society. The connection
between centre and locality pervades the volume, as does the
interplay of the ideological and cultural with the practical and
material. The essays highlight both how ideas were moulded in
political debate and action, and how their roots sprang from social
pressures and interests. It also emphasises the wider cultural
aspects of topics too-easily conceived as local and material.

This book provides an accessible collection of translated legal
sources through which the exploits of criminals and developments in
the English criminal justice system (c.1215-1485) can be studied.
Drawing on the wealth of archival material and an array of
contemporary literary texts, it guides readers towards an
understanding of prevailing notions of law and justice and
expectations of the law and legal institutions. Tensions are shown
emerging between theoretical ideals of justice and the practical
realities of administering the law during an era profoundly
affected by periodic bouts of war, political in-fighting, social
dislocation and economic disaster. Introductions and notes provide
both the specific and wider legal, social and political contexts in
addition to offering an overview of the existing secondary
literature and historiographical trends. This collection affords a
valuable insight into the character of medieval governance as well
as revealing the complex nexus of interests, attitudes and
relationships prevailing in society during the later Middle Ages.

This book breaks new ground in the study of crime and law
enforcement in late medieval England using the reign of Henry V as
a detailed case study. Dr Powell considers the subject on three
levels: legal theory - academic, governmental, and popular thinking
about the nature of law; legal machinery - the framework of courts
and their procedures; and legal practice - the enforcement of the
law in the reign of Henry V. There exists at present no other work
devoted to setting the legal system of this period in its social
and political context. Rejecting the traditional view of late
medieval England as chronically lawless and violent, Dr Powell
emphasizes instead the structural constraints on royal power to
enforce the law, and the King's dependence on the co-operation of
local society for the maintenance of his peace. Public order relied
less on the coercive powers of the courts than the art of political
management and the use of procedures for conciliation and
arbitration at local level.
"Unshackled" is not a term with which we readily associate. We are
often captivated by and content with, the mundane as a normal way
of life. God sees the remarkable. He releases to us His truth,
strength beyond ourselves, courage to experience His faithfulness
and freedom so that we might live the extraordinary. God has
something greater for us These devotions will challenge us to reach
out beyond ourselves to a new and living way, explore new horizons
and encourage us to trust God in simple faith as the Lord and
Sovereign of our life. When we apply these truths and principles to
our life .... we will experience God doing things in and through us
that are beyond our capabilities. Applying His truth and principles
to our everyday life will radically change our life for His glory.
It will be an exciting journey as we dare to believe and trust Him
