Designing for Dementia is written by an interdisciplinary team of professionals and academics whose aim is to present lessons learnt from the Dementia Demonstration House at the Building Research Establishment’s Innovation Park. Known as Chris and Sally’s House, the project represents a unique opportunity to show in practice what can be done to assist people living with dementia to continue to live at home and as part of the community with as much independence as possible. This book presents evidence based practical design guidance backed up by over 15 combined years of research by experienced professional designers. Beginning with an introduction which provides the background to the global dementia epidemic to allow readers to gain a better understanding of the issues they must consider, the book then discusses how good design principles, planning and construction standards can be used to effectively respond to the dementia crisis. The detailed findings from research using Chris and Sally’s house are presented and discussed, along with practical examples and success stories ranging from simple design features to the more complex use of sensors and automated ventilation. The hope is that readers can apply the lessons learnt from Chris and Sally’s House to successfully integrate solutions into the design of new or refurbished housing for the elderly, but also that the tools and insights shared will inform the wider context of good housing design, as well as the spectrum of constraints and design standards which often apply. This book is important reading for architects, designers, engineers and project managers, but also anyone with an interest in learning about practical solutions to aid those with dementia to live well at home.
New Developments in Dementia Prevention Research addresses a dearth of knowledge about dementia prevention and shows the importance of considering the broader social impact of certain risk factors, including the role we each play in our own cognitive health throughout the lifespan. The book draws on primary and secondary research in order to investigate the relationship between modifiable factors, including vascular and psychosocial risks, that may affect the incidence of dementia. Bringing together world-leading expertise from applied science, medicine, psychology, health promotion, epidemiology, health economics, social policy and primary care, the book compares and contrasts scientific and service developments across a range of settings. Each chapter presents these themes in a way that will ensure best practice and further research in the field of dementia prevention is disseminated successfully throughout the world. Perhaps most importantly, chapters also question what type of social responsibility we are prepared to embrace in order to address the challenges inherent in dementia prevalence. A decade ago, oestrogen-containing hormone therapy was viewed as a promising strategy for the prevention and treatment of dementia and age-related cognitive decline. However, treatment trials in women with Alzheimer's disease showed that oestrogens did not reverse cognitive impairment, and clinical trials in healthy older women indicated that oestrogens did not prevent cognitive decline. The Women's Health Initiative Memory Study trial even suggested an increased risk of dementia with treatment late in life. What happened? How are we to understand these findings? This book presents the relationship between intellectual functioning and sports performance for athletes with intellectual disabilities, as well as a discussion on the Computerised Cognitive test battery for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (CCIID), which was developed for that purpose. A literature review indicated that there is a significant difference between physical performance of athletes with and without intellectual disabilities, but so far, no studies have examined the association between the degree of intellectual functioning and sports performance for athletes with intellectual disabilities. This book investigates this relationship for different sports disciplines and examines the role of adaptive behaviour and different cognitive abilities using a wider range of cognitive information processing tests.
