US-Israeli Relations in a New Era - Issues and Challenges after 9/11 (Hardcover): Eytan Gilboa, Efraim Inbar US-Israeli Relations in a New Era - Issues and Challenges after 9/11 (Hardcover)
Eytan Gilboa, Efraim Inbar
R4,173 Discovery Miles 41 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines in depth the fundamental problems, factors and issues in current US-Israeli relations, which will have implications both for the Middle East and for world peace and prosperity.

The US and Israel have established an exceptional relationship, which has significant effects on events and processes in the entire Middle East. Israel depends on the US for military hardware, for support against hostile international organizations, and for economic and financial aid. In turn, it is viewed by the US as a strong and reliable ally, and the US has adopted strategic concepts that for decades have governed Israel's national security, such as pre-emptive strikes and counter-terrorist strategies. However, politicians and scholars have accused Israel and pro-Israeli organizations of exerting too much influence on US policy in the Middle East. Here, a collection of international experts present original research and findings on a wide variety of critical bilateral and regional issues in American-Israeli relations, approaching the topics from both theoretical and practical angles.

US Foreign Policy and Global Standing in the 21st Century - Realities and Perceptions (Paperback): Efraim Inbar, Jonathan... US Foreign Policy and Global Standing in the 21st Century - Realities and Perceptions (Paperback)
Efraim Inbar, Jonathan Rynhold
R1,336 Discovery Miles 13 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines US foreign policy and global standing in the 21st Century. The United States is the most powerful actor in world politics today. Against this backdrop, the present volume examines how the foreign policies pursued by Presidents' George W. Bush and Barack Obama have affected elite and public perceptions of the United States. By examining America's standing from the perspective of different actors from across various regions, including China, Russia, Latin America and the Middle East, while also assessing how these perceptions interact with America's own policies, this books presents a fresh interpretation of America's global standing. In doing so, the volume evaluates how these perceptions affect the realities of US power, and what impact this has on moulding US foreign policy and the policies of other global powers. A number of books address the question of which grand strategy the United States should adopt and the issue of whether or not America is in relative decline as a world power. However, the debate on these issues has largely been set against the policies of the Bush administration. By contrast, this volume argues that while Obama has raised the popularity of America since the low reached by Bush, America's credibility and overall standing have actually been damaged further under President Obama. This book will be of much interest to students of US foreign policy, US national security, strategic studies, Middle Eastern politics, international relations and security studies generally.

The Arab Spring, Democracy and Security - Domestic and International Ramifications (Paperback): Efraim Inbar The Arab Spring, Democracy and Security - Domestic and International Ramifications (Paperback)
Efraim Inbar
R1,487 Discovery Miles 14 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume analyzes the political, economic and strategic dimensions of the recent upheavals in the Middle East known as the Arab Spring.

Mass demonstrations in many Arab states challenged the political status quo and the existing political and cultural system in the region. While it is too early to offer a definitive analysis of the impact of the widespread discontent in the Arab world, the trajectory of the events indicates regime change in several states, containment of political unrest in most states, increase in Islamic tendencies, centrifugal tendencies in a number of political units and deterioration of economic conditions.

This volume presents an initial assessment by a selected group of Israeli scholars of the implications of the Arab Spring. The chapters focus on important issues such as democratization, the role of economic factors in political change and explanations for variations in regime stability in the Middle East. Taking an international relations perspective, the book not only examines the evolving regional balance, but also explores the link between external and internal politics and the implications of terrorism for regional security. The chapters also address the implications of the Arab Spring for Israel and its chances of existing peacefully in the region.

This volume will be of much interest to students of Middle East politics, international security, foreign policy and international relations.

Radical Islam and International Security - Challenges and Responses (Paperback): Efraim Inbar, Hillel Frisch Radical Islam and International Security - Challenges and Responses (Paperback)
Efraim Inbar, Hillel Frisch
R1,326 Discovery Miles 13 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Radical Islam poses a political challenge in the modern world which is like that of no other radical religious movement. Ideologically, it is perceived by Western policy makers as threatening the liberal-democratic ideology by which most states in the West abide and which most other states rhetorically espouse.
This book serves as a welcome addition to the intellectual and policy debate on the nature of the radical Islam phenomenon and how to respond to it. The collection is divided into three parts: the first part seeks to understand the Islamic challenge in broad comparative and historical terms, while the second part deals with specific regional case studies, which seek to identify patterns of uniformity and variation in radical Islam across a wide swath of terrain. The third part is policy-oriented, suggesting possible responses to the Islamic challenge. The contributors include distinguished researchers from Europe, North America and the Middle East.
This book will be of much interest to students of Islamism, political violence, international security and Middle Eastern politics.

Democracies and Small Wars (Paperback, annotated edition): Efraim Inbar Democracies and Small Wars (Paperback, annotated edition)
Efraim Inbar
R1,743 Discovery Miles 17 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

By their nature, democracies clearly have greater constraints than autocratic regimes on their freedom of action as they have to meet constitutional, legal and moral criteria in their use of force, and particularly so regarding the management of small wars. The relatively slower decision-making processes reduces the amount of flexibility required for waging small wars. Democratic political processes, including engaging in war, also require a certain amount of transparency, which is invariably at the expense of the military operational needs for secrecy. Unquestionably, democracies pay a certain price in combat effectiveness for maintaining their values. This collection brings together a number of case studies showing how democracies have won small wars.

This collection not only tackles the issue of the future of small states in the post-Cold War international order, but also investigates the future of international relations.

Religious Radicalism in the Greater Middle East (Hardcover): Efraim Inbar, Bruce Maddy- Weitzman Religious Radicalism in the Greater Middle East (Hardcover)
Efraim Inbar, Bruce Maddy- Weitzman
R3,744 Discovery Miles 37 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the mid-1970s, radical groups within the world's religions have grown in size and popularity, taking on more active roles in the political discourses of their respective societies. In the Middle East, this phenomenon has been most pronounced, as groups espousing such outlooks have engaged in comprehensive campaigns - sometimes involving the use of terrorism and other violent tactics - to alter the political systems of the states in which these organizations reside as well as in countries abroad. This collection provides a political analysis of religious radicalism in the Greater Middle East - encompassing the Middle East, central Asia and north Africa.

Rabin and Israel's National Security (Hardcover): Efraim Inbar Rabin and Israel's National Security (Hardcover)
Efraim Inbar
R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Out of stock

"Specialists would undoubtedly regard this book's publication as providing the definitive work of scholarship and interpretation of Yitzhak Rabin's historic role in the evolution of Israel's national security doctrines and practices. Its best features include meticulous, exhaustively thorough research, clear organization, and a straightforward prose style blessedly free from military or political science jargon." -- Samuel W. Lewis, former Ambassador of the United States to Israel

For more than forty years Yitzhak Rabin played a critical role in shaping Israeli national security policy and military doctrine. He began as a soldier in the Palmach, the elite underground unit of the Jewish community in Palestine, served in the 1948 War of Independence, and ultimately became chief of staff of the Israel Defense Force (IDF), defense minister in several governments, ambassador to the United States, and, twice, prime minister. As chief of staff, Rabin led the IDF to its triumph in the 1967 Six Day War. He was assassinated in 1995 as prime minister as he left a peace rally.

Drawing on unpublished materials and interviews with important sources, including Rabin himself, Efraim Inbar's work offers a systematic study of Rabin's strategic thinking and his policies. Topics include the evolution of Rabin's thinking, his contributions to IDF military buildup, his stress on Israel's relationship to the United States, his attitudes toward the use of force, and his approach to Israel's nuclear status in the Middle East. Inbar's conclusion evaluates Rabin's contribution to Israel's national security and assesses Rabin's personal transition from warrior to peace maker. Because of Rabin's crucialrole in Israel's defense establishment at important junctures in its history, this book provides an important view into the security challenges Israel has faced and how the country has responded over four decades.
