There are a number of different approaches and therapies available for children, young people and adults on the autistic spectrum, and the amount of information available on each one can be daunting for professionals and parents alike. Autism, Educational and Theoretical Approaches offers concise and clear explanations of a variety of proposed interventions and their effectiveness, and helps the reader to decide on the most appropriate treatment for each individual. Efrosini Kalyva provides accessible information about recent scientific evidence and the latest research, and allows you to consider the pros and cons of each approach. She focuses on the following areas including cognitive-behavioral approaches, developing social interaction, alternative communication strategies, developing play, sensory-motor approaches, psychotherapeutic approaches and biochemical approaches. This much-needed guide for practitioners and student teachers will also appeal to interested parents, and to anyone looking for a comparative examination of the variety of treatments on offer.
Social anxiety or social phobia has become increasingly common in contemporary societies due to the increased isolation in impersonal living environments and the weakening family ties that leave many individuals feeling withdrawn and estranged. In this book, the authors present new research on the ways of assessing social anxiety, as well as the role of autonomic arousal in the development of social phobia. Special reference is made to the impact of family on the development and maintenance of social anxiety in children on a both theoretical and practical level. Social anxiety is also discussed in different groups of individuals that have unique characteristics, such as substance users and abusers, patients with chronic heart failure, individuals with autism spectrum disorders, and AIDS/HIV sufferers. Finally, suggestions are made on ways to enhance help-seeking behaviour for individuals with social anxiety disorders and there is extensive reference to cognitive behavioural training and other relevant effective treatment or intervention techniques.
Conflicts are 'time-distributed social episodes' consisting of many discrete components that include issues, oppositions, resolutions and outcomes. We encounter conflicts everyday in our lives in different contexts and with different people about various different issues. Although all these levels of conflict play an important role in our lives, the focus of this book will be on interpersonal conflict that is more common in infancy, childhood and adolescence.
