This annotated bibliography concentrates on books dealing with an
important category of literature for youths, that of war and peace.
The number of books for young people on this subject is
surprisingly large, yet it is often ignored. Though such books
don't form the center of children's literature, they do represent
an important portion of it, revealing to children vital truths
about the human condition and how nobly humans can act under
extreme hardship. The book includes a number of different types of
works dealing with war and peace, e.g., allegories and parables,
picture books, poetry, biographies, Revolutionary and Civil War
books, tales of the Holocaust and Hiroshima, and stories dealing
with pacifism. Each entry includes author, title, publishing data,
and age level, as well as an annotation that assesses the entry's
pertinence, quality, and value. In addition to this bibliography
for youths, there is an annotated bibliography of materials for
adults that covers how to discuss the subject of war and peace with
young people. The volume is also extensively cross-referenced and
indexed, providing access to authors, illustrators, and titles,
subject entries such as warriors and pacifists, and categories of
material such as parables or poetry. It will be an important
reference work for teachers dealing with the subject of conflict
and for courses in education and the social sciences, and a
worthwhile addition to college, university, and public libraries.
Throughout recorded history, mankind has turned to language play
as a source of entertainment and intellectual stimulation. This
unique new reference provides comprehensive listings and
explainations, together with samples and historical information,
concerning the hundreds of letter and word games, puzzles, and
linguistic entertainments that enrich our cultural life.
In an introductory section, the author discusses the various
ways of manipulating words and letters and the relation of this
pastime to literature, linguistics, education and humor. He
comments on the use of word-play techniques in the teaching of
language arts, noting their demonstrated benefits in stimulating
creativity and motivating the unwilling student. Turning to the
literary uses of language play, he talks about writers--from
Shakespeare, Dickens, James Joyce, and Gertrude Stein to the
dadaists, Edward Lear, Ogden Nash, and various contemporary
literary artists--whose linguistic devices run the gamut from
riddles, acrostics, cross-word puzzles, and anagrams--are
considered, along with individual and group games intended to
entertain, teach skills, or challenge the imagination or
intellect.
Mathematical play has challenged and stimulated human ingenuity
throughout recorded history. It has ranged from the common sorts of
brain teasers such as mazes, arithmetic story problems, and simple
geometric puzzles to sophisticated explorations of questions that
still concern modern mathematical theorists. This new dictionary
provides a tantalizing variety of paradoxes, games, problems, and
puzzles that will appeal to mathematics enthusiasts at every level
of proficiency. Eiss introduces his subject with an overview of the
history of recreational mathematics and its relation to some
theoretical questions that have occupied mathematicians for
centuries. Dictionary entries include problems posed by particular
thinkers as well as traditional puzzlers that have come down to us
anonymously. Information on the origins and history of many of the
activities is supplied, and thorough cross-referencing enables the
reader to locate all puzzles, games, and amusements of a similar
type. The bibliography suggest sources of further information.
The term "mestizaje" is generally translated as race mixture, with
races typically understood as groups differentiated by skin color
or other physical characteristics. Yet such understandings seem
contradicted by contemporary understandings of race as a cultural
construct, or idea, rather than as a biological entity. How might
one then approach mestizaje in a way that is not definitionally
predicated on 'race,' or at least, on a modernist formulation of
race as phenotypically expressed biological difference? The
contributors to this volume provide explorations of this question
in varied Latin American contexts (Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia,
Colombia, Peru), from the16th century to the present. They treat
'mestizo acts' neither as expressions of pre-existing social
identities, nor as ideologies enforced from above, but as cultural
performances enacted in the in-between spaces of social and
political life. Moreover, they show how 'mestizo acts' not only
express or reinforce social hierarchies, but institute or change
them - seeking to prove - or to dismantle - genealogies of race,
blood, sex, and language in public and political ways. The chapters
in this book originally published as a special issue of Latin
American and Caribbean Ethnic Studies.
The conference of our European Institute for social security was
held from the 16th till the 19th of October 1980 in Peruggia. As
usual the theme of the Conference was the same of that of the
preparatory Colloque held in Brussels in 1979: Social security
reforms in Europe. The reports of that Colloque were published as
Part I I of the Yearbook 1978-1980. Part I of the Yearbook
1980-1981 contains the reports presented in Peruggia. The reports
are focussed on three items: The financing of social security (J.P.
Launay, Jan B.M. Pierik, Jcentsrn Henrik Petersen and Guy Perrin);
The social benefits (Bernd Schulte and Sven Guldburg) and The
organization of social security (A.J. Ogus, A. Berenstein and Jef
van Langendonck) . The Yearbook contains also two national reports
(M. Magrez and Asbj rn Kjcentsnstad), not available to be included
in Yearbook I I 1978-1980. Finally the Yearbook contains a report
from Guy Perrin on the social security problems of migrant workers
and the synthesis report of Pasquale Sandulli. It's a pity that we
could not include the report of Lucia Vitali, Le prestazini per

no English or French translation available. The Institute once
again wants to express its sincere gratitude to Pasquale Sandull i

In The Fernando Coronil Reader Venezuelan anthropologist Fernando
Coronil challenges us to rethink our approaches to key contemporary
epistemological, political, and ethical questions. Consisting of
work written between 1991 and 2011, this posthumously published
collection includes Coronil's landmark essays "Beyond
Occidentalism" and "The Future in Question" as well as two chapters
from his unfinished book manuscript, "Crude Matters." Taken
together, the essays highlight his deep concern with the Global
South, Latin American state formation, theories of nature, empire,
and postcolonialism, and anthrohistory as an intellectual and
ethical approach. Presenting a cross section of Coronil's oeuvre,
this volume cements his legacy as one of the most innovative
critical social thinkers of his generation.

The term “el pueblo” is used throughout Latin America,
referring alternately to small towns, to community, or to “the
people” as a political entity. In this vivid anthropological and
historical analysis of Mexico’s Yucatán peninsula, Paul K. Eiss
explores the multiple meanings of el pueblo and the power of the
concept to unite the diverse claims made in its name. Eiss focuses
on working-class indigenous and mestizo populations, examining how
those groups negotiated the meaning of el pueblo among themselves
and in their interactions with outsiders, including landowners,
activists, and government officials. Combining extensive archival
and ethnographic research, he describes how residents of the region
have laid claim to el pueblo in varied ways, as exemplified in
communal narratives recorded in archival documents, in the
performance of plays and religious processions, and in struggles
over land, politics, and the built environment. Eiss demonstrates
that while el pueblo is used throughout the hemisphere, the term is
given meaning and power through the ways it is imagined and
constructed in local contexts. Moreover, he reveals el pueblo to be
a concept that is as historical as it is political. It is in the
name of el pueblo—rather than class, race, or nation—that
inhabitants of northwestern Yucatán stake their deepest claims not
only to social or political rights, but over history itself.

Dies soll dadurch erreicht
werden, dass weit verbreiteten beziehungsweise allgemeingultigen
Ansichten und Glaubenssatzen der hinduistischen Vorstellungswelten
der Vorrang vor den eventuell voneinander abweichenden
konfessionsbedingten Uberzeugungen in Einzelaspekten eingeraumt
