Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - When the time-gun boomed from Edinburgh Castle, Bobby gave a startled yelp. He was only a little country dog - the very youngest and smallest and shaggiest of Skye terriers-bred on a heathery slope of the Pentland hills, where the loudest sound was the bark of a collie or the tinkle of a sheep-bell. That morning he had come to the weekly market with Auld Jock, a farm laborer, and the Grassmarket of the Scottish capital lay in the narrow valley at the southern base of Castle Crag. Two hundred feet above it the time-gun was mounted in the half-moon battery on an overhanging, crescent-shaped ledge of rock. In any part of the city the report of the one-o'clock gun was sufficiently alarming, but in the Grassmarket it was an earth-rending explosion directly overhead. It needed to be heard but once there to be registered on even a little dog's brain. Bobby had heard it many times, and he never failed to yelp a sharp protest at the outrage to his ears; but, as the gunshot was always followed by a certain happy event, it started in his active little mind a train of pleasant associations.

Greyfriars Bobby is the poignant story of Scotland's most famous dog. Bobby, a Skye terrier, lived in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. He was devoted to his kind master and enjoyed his life. When the man died, the little dog's devotion continued unabated, as he kept a nighttime vigil at his master's unmarked grave in Greyfriars cemetery. For the rest of his life - all fourteen years of it - Bobby's routine remained the same. Nothing, not even the efforts of the highest city officials, could dissuade him from sleeping near the resting place of his best friend. With its lovable hero and engaging portrayal of nineteenth century Edinburgh, Eleanor Atkinson's fictionalized account of a real-life dog will entertain readers of all ages.

The Greek myths are among the world's most important cultural building blocks and they have been retold many times, but rarely do they focus on the remarkable women at the heart of these ancient stories.

Stories of gods and monsters are the mainstay of epic poetry and Greek tragedy, from Homer to Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, from the Trojan War to Jason and the Argonauts. And still, today, a wealth of novels, plays and films draw their inspiration from stories first told almost three thousand years ago. But modern tellers of Greek myth have usually been men, and have routinely shown little interest in telling women’s stories. And when they do, those women are often painted as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil. But Pandora – the first woman, who according to legend unloosed chaos upon the world – was not a villain, and even Medea and Phaedra have more nuanced stories than generations of retellings might indicate.

Now, in Pandora's Jar: Women in the Greek Myths, Natalie Haynes – broadcaster, writer and passionate classicist – redresses this imbalance. Taking Pandora and her jar (the box came later) as the starting point, she puts the women of the Greek myths on equal footing with the menfolk. After millennia of stories telling of gods and men, be they Zeus or Agamemnon, Paris or Odysseus, Oedipus or Jason, the voices that sing from these pages are those of Hera, Athena and Artemis, and of Clytemnestra, Jocasta, Eurydice and Penelope.

This is the charming story, based on fact, of the love of a Skye terrier called Bobby for his master in nineteenth-century Edinburgh. Bobby and his master 'Auld Jock', a Pentland Hills farmer, were inseparable and for fourteen years after Auld Jock's death little Bobby made his home near the old man's grave in the cemetery in Greyfriars Kirkyard. He was loved and cared for by the local people who were touched by the bond between the dog and his master. A life-size statue of Bobby still stands in Edinburgh, commemorating his devotion and loyalty near Greyfriars.

Greyfriar's Bobby (Paperback): Eleanor Atkinson Greyfriar's Bobby (Paperback)
Eleanor Atkinson
R239 Discovery Miles 2 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Greyfriar's Bobby is the wonderful tale of a dog who sat on his mster's grave for many years, becoming so well known that the Edinburgh authorities built a statue of him. The impressive part of this book is Eleanor Atkinson's magnificent depiction of Bobby's understanding. A master of the plausible, she has us believe Bobby can understand English (or rather Scottish) by the tone and the mentioning of names by the speaker. Bobby's actions are always totally in keeping with the actions of a very intelligent dog rather than the actions of a human. The reader is never left thinking "Are you sure?" with any of Bobby's antics but is more inclined to applaud. Another amazing fact of the story is Atkinson's very evocative depiction of Edinburgh in the 1860's, especially considering she had never been there. The language she uses for the characters seems very authentic, although it does require a little effort to understand it at times. Overall, Greyfriar's Bobby is an enchanting read on the devotion and initiative of a legendary little dog. Anyone with a dog, an interest in Auld Sotland or a need for a lift, will enjoy this truly wonderful book.

The famous classic Scottish tale based on the true story of a dog's lifetime devotion to his master, first published in 1912, loved and widely read the world over. Bobby, a sparky silver-haired Skye terrier, adopts lonely shepherd Auld Jock, for his master and the two become inseparable. When Jock is dismissed by the farmer he tries to find work in the city, but sinks into poverty and dies, having suffered one cold winter too many. The farmer tries to reclaim Bobby as a pet for his daughter but the little dog remains faithful only to Auld Jock, guarding his master's grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard in the heart of Edinburgh's old town. By day, he plays with the local orphans and eats at a nearby tavern but, in spite of anything even the Lord Provost himself can do, Bobby returns each night to sleep by his master. Bobby's devotion changes the lives of those around him and ultimately the conditions of the poor in Edinburgh. And as the years go by, the little dog's loyalty is rewarded in a very special way.
