Since its establishment, the UN's Peacebuilding Architecture (PBA) has been involved in peacebuilding processes in more than 20 countries. This edited volume takes stock of the overall impact of the PBA during its first decade in existence, and generates innovative recommendations for how the architecture can be modified and utilized to create more synergy and fusion between the UN's peace and development work. The volume is based on commissioned research and independent evaluations as well as informed opinions of several key decision-makers closely engaged in shaping the UN's peacebuilding agenda. It seeks to find a balance between identifying the reality and constraints of the UN's multilateral framework, while being bold in exploring new and innovative ways in which the UN can enhance the results of its peace and development work through the PBA. The research and writing of each chapter has been guided by four objectives: to assess the overall impact of the PBA; to generate innovative ideas for how the PBA can be made more effective post-2015; to analyze the PBA's role at the nexus of the UN's peace and development work; and to consider what would be required for the PBA to increase and improve its impact in future. It will be of interest to diplomats, UN officials, the policy community and scholars engaged in the debate following the 2015 review and the implementation of its recommendations, and will be an essential resource for UN and peacebuilding scholars.

Peace Support Operations: Nordic Perspectives brings together Nordic academics working in the field of peace support operations broadly defined. It contains a collection of articles that present different theoretical approaches to the study of peace support operations and contribute to enhance the knowledge of the Nordic countriesa (TM) participation in such operations. Its case studies describe the development of peacekeeping forces from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland in the face of evolving threats to world security over the past sixty years, and how each country's reaction has differed. The conflicts covered in this study include the Cold War, the Balkan conflict, the first Gulf War and the Malawian ethnic conflict. Thus, it constitutes a contribution to the academic field in both a theoretical and an empirical sense.

To what extent can the United Nations serve as an agent for emancipatory change and transformation? This fundamental question lies at the heart of this exciting new book. Author Eli Stamnes applies the principles and precepts of Critical Security Studies to offer a new and highly innovative perspective on the UN operation that was deployed in the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia between December 1992 and February 1999. Three of the core arguments of Critical Security Studies are brought to bear, namely: the importance of the wider security agenda beyond the purely military; the importance of 'referent objects' other than the state; and a determination to make a concern with human emancipation central to the academic enterprise. The result is to open up new or underappreciated dimensions of the UN operation in Macedonia. By developing a framework of analysis based on the ideas of Axel Honneth the book also makes an original and important contribution to the further development of Critical Security Studies itself.
