Liminal Spaces of Writing in Adolescent and Adult Education
addresses the persistent gap in writing reform at the middle,
secondary, and post-secondary level. Through an examination of
"useful" and "liminal" writing, the book explores the intellectual
and creative space where structured expectations verge with
individual imagination in writing. The premise of the book is built
around a multiplicity of ways to invite adolescent and adult
students to enter into states of liminality where they are
encouraged to experiment with style, form, genre, and voice.
Through research featuring the perspectives of adolescents,
classroom teachers, teacher educators, graduate students, and
literacy researchers, the book offers numerous insights into
fostering a liminal and useful approach to writing instruction.
Each author takes the reader through a journey of finding the
liminal as teachers, writers, and researchers. Taken together, this
tapestry of perspectives puts forth the argument that liminal
moments are necessary caveats to explore in order to cultivate
fully actualized writing where students are in control of
structures and traditional writing expectations but also free to
imagine new ways of breaking with conventions and being as writers.
Thus, the book argues liminal writing is critical in bringing about
sustained writing reform.
This interdisciplinary, international collection examines how
sophisticated digital practices and technologies exploit and
capitalize on emotions, with particular focus on how social media
are used to exacerbate social conflicts surrounding racism,
misogyny, and nationalism. Radically expanding the study of media
and political communications, this book bridges humanities and
social sciences to explore affective information economies, and how
emotions are being weaponized within mediatized political
landscapes. The chapters cover a wide range of topics: how
clickbait, "fake news," and right-wing actors deploy and weaponize
emotion; new theoretical directions for understanding affect,
algorithms, and public spheres; and how the wedding of big data and
behavioral science enables new frontiers of propaganda, as seen in
the Cambridge Analytica and Facebook scandal. The collection
includes original interviews with luminary media scholars and
journalists. The book features contributions from established and
emerging scholars of communications, media studies, affect theory,
journalism, policy studies, gender studies, and critical race
studies to address questions of concern to scholars, journalists,
and students in these fields and beyond.
This volume assembles the papers, presentations, and speeches from
the 50th Anniversary Meeting of the International Association of
University Presidents (IAUP) held in Oxfordshire in 2015. This book
is a companion volume to the proceedings of the 1965 inaugural
meeting of IAUP, also published by Fairleigh Dickinson University
Press. The highlight of the 50th Anniversary Meeting was an
academic conference at Oxford University on the theme of "Higher
Education in 2065." Participants were called upon to look ahead to
the next fifty years of global higher education, drawing from their
academic fields, as well as their leadership experience within and
beyond higher education. The resulting collection includes
discussions of current trends that will impact the future of
universities, as well as discussions of specific challenges likely
to face higher education institutions, both generally and in
particular regions. Some contributors outline steps that higher
education institutions and/or policymakers should adopt today to
prepare for those challenges, while others imagine the university
of the future. Edited by IAUP secretary-general emeritus Jason
Scorza, this book is dedicated to the memory of J. Michael Adams,
who served both as president of Fairleigh Dickinson University and
president of IAUP, and includes some of his final writings on the
topic of the future of global higher education. Founded in 1965,
IAUP is the world's largest association of university chief
executives from higher education institutions. Membership is
limited to individuals who serve or have served as presidents,
rectors, or vice-chancellors at accredited colleges or
universities.
Designing real gardens on slopes for real people forms the central
core of this book. It demonstrates that making plans for gardens on
slopes of all types really works. Not only that, they are a
necessary part of the process of turning challenging sites into
attractive gardens. This is a really useful book that shows how
good design helps to avoid costly common mistakes. It is a simple
and informative guide detailing from survey to construction and
planting. Not many gardens are completely flat. Just one step in a
garden makes a big difference, adding more interest to the site.
But slopes do present more of a challenge when designing gardens
and definitely add to the expense of a building project. A select
portfolio of beautifully designed gardens shows projects from start
to finish. These are not simply attractive garden plans - they
actually work! Not only does this book inspire, it will show how to
master hilly sites. There are currently no books that deal
specifically with this common problem: in fact, in many books,
designing gardens on slopes is barely mentioned. Students of garden
design, qualified garden and landscape designers, landscape
builders and architects, and owners of sloping gardens will
therefore find this book particularly useful.
"Now what should I do?" This is a question academic leaders ask
themselves with great regularity. As ironic as it may seem, very
few academic leaders have had any formal training in academic
administration, or in any kind of administration at all. For the
most part, academic administrators learn on the job. They also seek
advice wherever they can get it. The purpose of this book is to
offer such advice. The book is written both for academic
administrators at all levels as well as for those who aspire to
academic administration.

A woman's sexuality evolves dramatically during her life. In this
book, Elizabeth Davis explores hormones and menstruation, pregnancy
and birth, menopause and aging, fertility management through body
awareness, and much more, for a complete picture. She analyzes
controversial hormone replacement therapy and looks at what effect
stress, overwork, major life events, relationship upheaval, and
sexual abuse have on a woman's sexual health.
This fully updated edition presents practices and principles
applicable for the reconstruction of automobile and commercial
truck crashes. Like the First Edition, it starts at the very
beginning with fundamental principles, information sources, and
data gathering and inspection techniques for accident scenes and
vehicles. It goes on to show how to analyze photographs and crash
test data. The book presents tire fundamentals and shows how to use
them in spreadsheet-based reverse trajectory analysis. Such methods
are also applied to reconstructing rollover crashes. Impacts with
narrow fixed objects are discussed. Impact mechanics, structural
dynamics, and conservation-based reconstruction methods are
presented. The book contains a comprehensive treatment of crush
energy and how to develop structural stiffness properties from
crash test data. Computer simulations are reviewed and discussed.
Extensively revised, this edition contains new material on side
pole impacts. It has entirely new chapters devoted to low-speed
impacts, downloading electronic data from vehicles, deriving
structural stiffness in side impacts, and incorporating electronic
data into accident reconstructions
Based on the hit documentary that inspired a vibrant online
community, this innovative approach to birthing shows women how to
maximize childbirth's emotional and physical rewards
With more than 4 million babies born in the United States each
year, too many women experience birth as nothing more than a
routine or painful event. In her much-praised film Orgasmic Birth,
acclaimed filmmaker Debra Pascali-Bonaro showed that in fact
childbirth is a natural process to be enjoyed and cherished. Now
she joins forces with renowned author and activist Elizabeth Davis
to offer an enlightening program to help women attain the most
empowering and satisfying birth experience possible. While an
orgasmic birth can, for some, induce feelings of intense, ecstatic
pleasure, it is ultimately about taking control of one's own body
and making the most informed decisions to have a safe, memorable,
and joyful birth day.
Whether women choose to give birth at home, in a hospital, or in a
birthing center, Orgasmic Birth provides all the necessary tools
and guidance to design the birth plan that's best for them.
Featuring inspiring stories from mothers and their partners and
filled with practical advice and solutions, this one-of-a-kind
resource is the next frontier of natural, intimate childbirth.
Two old school friends reconnect unexpectedly after thirty-five
years and discover that they both love travelling - and the more
exotic and far-flung the location, the better! Not having a clue
whether they will get along, the eccentric pair embark on a trial
journey to Morocco. That tentative beginning has turned into a
series of wonderfully unusual holidays, and Hil and Liz have been
circumnavigating the globe ever since. Among many other
destinations, they have taken in Marrakech, Fez and the Atlas
Mountains; Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands; Istanbul and
Cappadocia. They've been on safari in Namibia, Botswana and the
Serengeti, attended music festivals in Naples and Prague and made a
pilgrimage to the western isles of Mull and Iona. Along the way
they have encouraged, enraged and entertained each other, while
living through countless adventures. This is a book for
thrillseekers and armchair travellers alike, a celebration of
friendship and laughter - and an inspiration for anyone who's
longed to venture outside their comfort zone and travel to exotic
places.
