This title introduces the novice researcher to more than just
methods and techniques in qualitative research. The topics covered
also include ways of looking for topics; positioning an
investigation within a theoretical frame; practising writing as a
process of conducting an inquiry; developing a sense of self as a
social researcher.
This book explores the current landscape of Initial Teacher
Education (ITE) in primary schools in South Africa. Considering
recent policy directives and initiatives, it highlights the
dilemmas of ITE for the primary school and gives a thorough account
of innovations and initiatives to improve ITE. The book presents
what works best for quality preparation of teachers in the Global
South, where many children rely on their teachers and school life
to break the cycle of poverty. Chapters draw on evidence from
workplace learning, pre-service study, and primary school teacher
education policy to highlight examples of promising change in
teacher education in South Africa, addressing the cliches of
"theory versus practice" head-on. This book successfully brings out
the challenging aspects of teacher education for childhood learning
which has otherwise been regarded as the softer option for a career
in education. This book will be of great interest for academics,
researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of teacher
education, African education, educational policy, international
education, and comparative education.

Today and ever since human beings interacted, addressing each other
constituted a vital part of communication. Over time most languages
of Indo-European origin developed distinctive forms of address,
mostly by means of binary systems comprising a polite and an
informal form. The English system of address pronouns, on the other
hand, is characterised by the unique development of the plural
pronoun 'you' virtually ousting its singular counterpart 'thou'.
This work looks into this development with regard to linguistic,
social, historical, and literary aspects. The main part of the work
thus focuses on the history of English address pronouns from Old
English to the present day. A diachronic description of the High
German address pronoun system, distinguishing itself by going
through an extreme variety of forms from its origins up to its
modern standard usage, shall serve as a basis for a comparative
analysis of the two systems and shed light on the immense influence
social and historical factors have on language. 'You and Thou'
addresses students of diachronic linguistics as well as anybody
interested in the history of English and German, and particularly
their address term systems.
