111 Places in County Durham You Shouldn't Miss will unveil Durham's
secret depths and lesser-known delights, allowing it to step out
from the shadow of its spectacular, UNESCO-listed cathedral and its
highly-ranked university. This small, hilly city has its gems, but
the county's historic towns (Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle,
Newton Aycliffe), by the water (Hartlepool, Seaham) and nestled
away in its tiniest villages (Kelloe, Tow Law) are home to Durham's
true hidden wonders. Discover the mysterious sea caves at Blackhall
Rocks, or wander up Nose's Point to Blast Beach. Traverse Durham
city's wonkiest staircase, or make your own mind up about the
county's most controversially-designed estate. Marvel at Killhope's
working Waterwheel, and uncover the county's famous coal mining
past. Unearth disused collieries and quarries reclaimed by the
overgrowth surrounding them. Spot what's left of a stone boar at
Barnard Castle. Hear the real story behind Hartlepool's most
baffling local legend, and try to stand atop a haunted copse... if
you dare.

A History of Webheath begins with its origins in around 1250 and
includes its time within the Forest of Feckenham. The boundaries of
the parish, which have been altered over the years, once covered a
far greater area, extending down through Upper Bentley, across
Crumpfields to Heathfield Road. Following Birchfield Road to
Headless Cross and back along the other side of the road, the area
also comprised Tack Farm, the outskirts of Hewell Grange and up to
Tardebigge Church. The book charts Webheathâs evolvement from a
sleepy, rural agricultural village to the present day thriving
community now encompassed within the town of Redditch in
Worcestershire. With maps and photographs it contains much
information on local landmarks, place names, farms and houses,
major local landowners and notable residents.

books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the
original University of Minnesota Press editions.
No other English translation of this famous thirteenth-century
Spanish narrative poem is available, in either poetry or prose. The
present translators have put it into a form that reproduces most
faithfully the quaint and naive quality of the original "Libro de
Apolonio," the story of which appears in Book Eight of John Gower's
"Confessio Amantis "and in Shakespeare's "Pericles."
The reader who is not a specialist in medieval or Spanish
literature will find here a lush uncensored tale of mad adventure.
If he will give himself up to the spell of its child-like spirit,
he will find himself led on through such "faery lands forlorn" as
the untrammeled imagination has immemorially loved to create. The
story parades before him storms, shipwrecks, kidnappings, pirates,
supposed deaths, miraculous escapes and survivals. Beginning in a
theme that runs through dramatic literature from "Oedipus Rex "
through "The Cenci " to "The Barretts of Wimpole Street," the plot
reveals the misfortunes that furiously pursue Apollonius, king of
Tyre, after he tries to woo the daughter of King Antiochus away
from her father. Forced to flee for his life, Apollonius plunges
from adventure to adventure, until incredible reunions and
transports of joy bring the tale to a conventional happy
ending.
The translators' Introduction gives an account of the use of the
Apollonius material in Old French, Provencal, Anglo-Saxon, German,
and other literatures, as well as tracing the history of the poem
from its source in a lost Greek romance.
