This book considers what work and retirement mean for older women,
how each is experienced, and how working fits with other facets of
their lives. The authors draw on data collected from women
themselves, employers, industry stakeholders and older workers'
advocates, to explore older women's experiences of work and
retirement against a backdrop of current policy efforts to extend
working lives in response to ageing societies. Contrary to common
representations of the situation of older workers, the data reveal
how workplaces can be seen as relatively benign, and retirement
viewed positively. It contributes to academic debate regarding
identity, purpose and meaning in later life, identifying challenges
for work-focused public policy. Students and scholars of human
resource management, sociology, gerontology and social policy will
appreciate the extension of understanding older women's life course
trajectories that the book offers. Public policy-makers will
benefit from the different representations of older women in the
book, and the identification of where they would benefit from
policy changes.

Creative Ageing and the Arts of Care makes a case for cultural
participation by older adults to enhance the quality of their
lives. Building on concepts of adult human development and
empowerment, Elizabeth Brooke reframes 'active ageing' to include
forms of creative expression and cultural participation crucial to
transforming later stages of the life course. Focusing on the
micro-level of the experiences of older adults in visual arts,
dance, theatre and music, the book showcases multi-perspective case
studies compiled from community-based initiatives and care settings
carried out in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, and
Australia to explain creative ageing in practice. Through the
analysis of arts forms embedded in theoretical sociological
frameworks and the lens of cultural gerontology, the case studies
explore and develop theoretical insights about older adults'
experiences of artmaking which also contest ageism. The case
studies interrelate meso-level interactional processes entailed in
art-making and macro-level structural contexts. Drawing out success
factors, the author articulates a transferable policy framework and
practical recommendations for a multi-level model of creative
ageing. Breaking fresh ground by proposing a new conceptual and
practical framework promoting 'creative ageing', Elizabeth Brooke
ultimately argues that 'active ageing' must be reframed to include
cultural participation as an integral domain at the crux of
wellbeing. Ultimately, the book demonstrates how quality of life
and quality of care, including self-care, coincide by enabling
adults to flourish creatively as they age.
This book is intended to be a users' manual, not a reference book,
and so has charts, diagrams, tables and cross-references to enable
the interested practitioner to incorporate the Western Herbal
Tradition into their practice. It synthesises and elaborates on all
the extant information on the Western Healing Tradition as recorded
by William Lilly and Nicholas Culpeper in the 17Cth and from the
author's own herbal practice. It shows how using planetary energies
and the wheel of the year deepens our understanding of the action
of medicinal plants on the body and establishes the practitioner
within their environment, allowing them to use planetary energies
to determine the peak times to harvest and use herbal remedies and
to locate health and sickness within the holistic paradigm of
Western Traditional Herbal Medicine. For ease of use, the book is
divided into two sections. The first details the philosophical
framework within which traditional western herbalists can operate;
looking at the four humours, and seven planets and the use of the
diagnostic tool of the decumbiture chart. The work is so organised
that the humoral system can be used without astrology, should that
be the preference. The second part covers the practical application
of the philosophy, how to collect, make and administer herbal
remedies according to the planetary days and hours and the
decumbiture chart. Examples of decumbiture charts will be included
to show how the philosophy is used in practice. Lastly, a materia
medica of common herbs is included. This fascinating new title by
the best-selling Elisabeth Brooke will be of interest to anyone
involved in the theory or practice of herbal medicine, particularly
those who have been inspired by her other classic works including A
Woman's Book of Herbs and Herbal Therapy for Women.
Offering a new and insightful discussion into the subjects of both
Greek mythology and astrology, Elisabeth Brooke skilfully
intertwines the two to create an original and captivating
exploration of the female experience. It expresses a deep
appreciation that women’s lives are not all the same and should
not be put into the same overused stereotypes; instead, it offers a
refreshing perspective of female archetypes, illustrated by the
lives of extraordinary women both alive and dead, which women
everywhere will relate to. Each chapter of this book follows one of
the twelve Astrological Signs, seven traditional planets, as well
as the Houses and Aspects. The connection to a Goddess of Greek
mythology is detailed for each of these, providing an illuminating
and engrossing background to the Greek myths and Goddess lore. The
chapters bridge the gap between ancient and modern, exploring more
recent examples of brave, strong, and empowering women for each of
the Astrological Signs. The book can be read straight through as an
exploration of the Goddesses and Astrology, and as a reference book
for both astrological studies and historical Goddess lore. Goddess
Astrology also contains excerpts from classical texts, newly
translated by the author Elisabeth Brooke.
First published in 1993, Elisabeth Brooke's powerful exploration of
women's role as healers through the ages and their continuing fight
for recognition is now expanded and updated. Tracing a lineage that
spans the centuries, this revisionist history celebrates women in
medicine from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome through to the Middle
Ages, the Renaissance and the present day. Drawing on primary
sources, the lives of revolutionary healers are explored in this
comprehensive overview - from Trotula to Hildegard von Bingen, Mary
Seacole to Wendy Savage.Informed by the author's appreciation of
the politics of medicine, this revised edition features brand-new
sections on community medicine; indigenous healers; end-of-life
care and twentieth-century pioneers such as Rosemary Gladstar, Ina
May Gaskin and Louise Hay.
Where do you go at night, once you have turned out the light and
snuggled down under the blankets? Abigail Crabtree's imaginary
world is precious to her; an escape from the waking world. That is
until one wintry night, when a sinister horseman appears and
threatens to wrest it from her in the name of the King of Traumund.
Desperate to save her realm from asion, she turns to her godfather
- the enchanting Mr. Montefiore - for help. She takes refuge in his
desolate country house, where rumours of cruelty and murder abound.
Encouraged by his apparent sympathy, Abigail and her giant owl soar
beyond the borders of her own imaginary world and into the vast
universe of collective dreams. But even as she delights in
Traumund's bewildering beauty, she finds herself ever more seduced
by the very evil which threatens to destroy it. How can Abigail
remember what she is fighting for? How can she even be sure where
her loyalties lie? And - the most formidable question of all - will
she ever be free of the intensely beguiling Mr. Montefiore?
