How do people make inferences? How do their reasoning processes
differ and why? Methods of Thought attempts to answer these
questions by looking in detail at the different reasoning
strategies people apply, how these are acquired, how they are
selected and how use of these strategies is influenced by
individual and task properties. Focusing on empirical data and
research into deductive reasoning tasks, this book summarizes
current trends in the field and helps us to understand how
individual differences in reasoning impact on other studies of
higher cognitive abilities in humans. Contributors include
researchers who have shown that people make deductions by using a
variety of strategies, and others who have found that deductive
reasoning problems provide a useful test-bed for investigating
general theories of strategy development. Together, it is shown
that these general theories derived from other domains have
important implications for deductive reasoning, and also that
findings by reasoning researchers have wider consequences for
general theories of strategy development. This book will be of
interest to anyone studying or working in the fields of reasoning,
problem solving, and cognitive development, as well as cognitive
science in general.

I'm sure you've been through a situation where you get your
hopes built up by someone, only to have them let down by a
heart-wrenching disappointment. Well, Evie thought that the Captain
was going to take her to see an unusual but beautiful planet where
she would see things she had never seen before and probably never
will again. However, her hopes were dashed when the Train landed on
Earth, in Adelaide - where she comes from. No fun for Evelyn
Bamford (Earthling), but loads of fun for Paulo Vistar (Serothian)
as he had never seen the planet Earth before. Paulo is in for a
treat when their curiosity takes them to the Adelaide Zoo where
there has been a recent catastrophe.
While Evie is forced to stay home with her parents to give them
some much-overdue explanations, the Captain and Paulo are eager to
solve the problem at the zoo. Little do they know that there is
another catastrophe at a nearby school, and one determined teacher
suspects that it is not of this world.
Can a seven-year-old girl hold the key to the mystery of the
strange, aggressive-looking creature? What's it got to do with a
roaming crocodile? And can the Captain come up with a permanent
solution before the hostile visitors claim all the lives of the
people of Earth?
The Captain and Paulo find themselves becoming quick-change
artists and 'masters of disguise', while Evie is kidnapped from her
own backyard and comes face-to-face with the bullies of her
past.
Usually, things can't just disappear. You may think this has
happened before when you've lost a pen, your keys, your homework,
or maybe even your baby brother. But that is not actually what
happens at all. Usually, you have simply put it down somewhere and,
afterward, forgotten where. However, in this story, you will
encounter an incident where a person does disappear, and in this
story, that is not so unusual because the captain and the crew of
his train, Evelyn Bamford (Earthling) and Paulo Vistar (Serothian),
are on an unknown planet somewhere in deep space-where just about
anything could happen. Fourteen-year-old Evie has disappeared, and
it's up to her new travelling companions to discover what's
happened. Along the way, the captain and Paulo encounter an angry
lost mob, an angry hungry animal, and an angry greedy maniac, while
Evie's problems seem to be-well, more relaxing, peaceful, restful,
quiet and gloriously-sickeningly frustrating. How can Evie be stuck
somewhere that doesn't seem to exist? Why doesn't anyone else
around her notice that something is terribly wrong? And what is the
awful secret that lies beneath the surface of the sanctuary? Next
time you're thinking of taking a holiday, don't go there
Elizabeth Newton, being a Christian and a fan of science
fiction/fantasy, explores what space and time travel might be like,
with all the monsters and aliens included, but also with the
presence of an all-seeing, omnipresent, loving, compassionate God.
She embeds real life problems and situations within her stories
(particularly those faced by young teens through to young adults)
and communicates Christian values and morals in order to address
them. Her writing is light-hearted and whimsical, but at the same
time, mysterious and suspensful. There are some serious enemies to
face, obstacles to get past and lessons to learn.
