Joan Baez - The Last Leaf (Hardcover): Elizabeth Thomson Joan Baez - The Last Leaf (Hardcover)
Elizabeth Thomson
R464 Discovery Miles 4 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since she stepped onstage unannounced at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival, Joan Baez has occupied a singular place in popular music. Within three years, she had recorded three best-selling albums and had embarked on a tour of southern US campuses, playing to integrated audiences in an era of segregation. When Time magazine chronicled the folk revival in November 1962, her portrait was on the cover. Her voice was “as lustrous and rich as old gold.†She has mentored generations of singer-songwriters, most famously Bob Dylan.   But Joan Baez has always been much more than simply a singer. Even before she stood on the podium beside Dr Martin Luther King at the March on Washington, her voice was raised in sorrow and anger as well as in song. The causes for which she has campaigned are legion and it’s no surprise that she was chosen to open Live Aid in Philadelphia in 1985. In 1993, amid the siege of Bosnia, she donned a flak jacket to sing for the citizens of Sarajevo offering, as so many times before and since, “an act of love, sharing, witness and musicâ€.   Now approaching 80, Baez has stepped down from the stage following a worldwide farewell tour and a final Grammy-nominated album. The Last Leaf is a celebration of a timeless figure whose music and influence will endure long after her voice is silenced. The Discography is by Grammy-nominated music historian Arthur Levy. Joan Baez is the recipient of the 2020 Woody Guthrie Prize.

This book is the first dedicated collection of systemic functional descriptions of Japanese. It represents the most recent, international work describing the system and structure of Japanese and how applications of the descriptions have been used in the fields of computer science and education. The book is divided into two sections: descriptions and applications. The descriptions section is organised into the three metafunctions: textual, interpersonal and ideational. The applications section explores education and computing. The contributions on education present work on the application of systemic functional theory to teaching Japanese as a second or foreign language. The contributions on computing present the application of systemic functional theory to the development of a Japanese language based computer operating system. Systemic Functional Perspectives of Japanese is suitable for undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers of descriptive linguistics and applied linguistics and also for Japanese language teachers. It includes a foreword by Professor Noboru Yamaguchi, Tohoku University, one of the first linguists to explore systemic functional perspectives of Japanese.

Genetics and Public Health in the 21st Century - Using Genetic Information to Improve Health and Prevent Disease (Hardcover):... Genetics and Public Health in the 21st Century - Using Genetic Information to Improve Health and Prevent Disease (Hardcover)
Muin J. Khoury, Wylie Burke, Elizabeth Thomson
R2,788 Discovery Miles 27 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

With the accelerating discovery of human genes, public health professionals are increasingly confronted with a large body of scientific information that will guide public health action. Because the broad mission of public health is to fulfill society's interest in assuring conditions in which people can be healthy, the integration of new genetic information in public health research, policy and program development is unavoidable. Public health leadership is urgently needed to use genetic information to improve health and prevent disease, and to address ethical, legal and social issues resulting from inappropriate use of such information. In the not too-distant future, disease prevention and health promotion programs will routinely consider whether or not to use genetic information to help target behavioral, medical or environmental intervention activities in order to maximize benefit and minimize costs and harm to individuals. In anticipation of the expected growth at the interface of genetics and public health, this book delineates a framework for the integration of advances in human genetics into public health practice. It provides a comprehensive review of public health genetics, including chapters on important general issues such as newborn and other genetic screening, the delivery of genetic services, and the ethical, legal and social implications of the use of genetics within public health. It also reviews relevant clinical topics, the historical background, cross-cultural aspects, and communication issues. Contributors come from a wide range of fields including epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and management, health services research, behavioral and social sciences, ethics, law, health economics, and laboratory sciences.

Bob Dylan - No Direction Home (Illustrated edition) (Hardcover): Robert Shelton Bob Dylan - No Direction Home (Illustrated edition) (Hardcover)

Robert Shelton met Bob Dylan when the young singer arrived in New York in 1961. He became Dylan’s friend, champion, and critic. His book, first published in 1986, was hailed as the definitive unauthorized biography of this moody, passionate genius. Shelton tells the intimate and first-hand story of Bob Dylan’s formative years in Greenwich Village NYC, and it is the only biography that has been written with his active cooperation.   Dylan gave Shelton access to his parents, Abe and Beatty Zimmerman – whom no other journalist has ever interviewed; to his brother, David; to childhood friends from Hibbing; to fellow students and friends from Minneapolis; and to Suze Rotolo, the muse immortalized on the cover of Freewheelin’, among others. Concluding Dylan’s story backstage during his triumphant 1978 world tour, No Direction Home took 20 years to complete and when it was finally published the book received widespread critical acclaim.   Following his Nobel Prize for Literature Award in 2016, Dylan’s standing is higher than at any time since the 1960s and Shelton’s book is now seen as a classic. This new illustrated edition, published in the year of Dylan’s 80th birthday, includes key images of Dylan throughout his incredible, enduring career, making it a must for all Dylan fans.

"To this day, wherever great rock music is being made, there is the shadow of Bob Dylan," said Bruce Springsteen at the induction of Dylan into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. Or to quote John Rockwell, "Anyone who didn't live through the sixties simply cannot realize how important his albums seemed then; they defined a community." Dylan is a musical, literary, political, and religious icon whose lyrics and mystique have spawned countless articles and books. "The Dylan Companion" is a generous helping of the best, most pungent, and most insightful commentary on Dylan from all phases of his career right up to the present: personal recollections and professional assessments from the likes of Ken Kesey, Greil Marcus, Joan Baez, Andrew Motion, Lester Bangs, Kurt Loder, Allen Ginsberg, Pauline Kael, Geoff Dyer, Simon Winchester, and Robert Christgau--over fifty pieces celebrating the sixty-year-old performer who somehow manages to stay forever young.

The Bowie Companion (Paperback, New Ed): David Gutman, Elizabeth Thomson The Bowie Companion (Paperback, New Ed)
David Gutman, Elizabeth Thomson
R527 Discovery Miles 5 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite his vast influence and perennial popularity, David Bowie remains one of the most elusive figures in rock, and few books have taken a serious look at his remarkable career. The Bowie Companion provides an entertaining overview of nearly three decades of popular culture commentary, giving full weight to his stage, screen, and musical careers. From both American and English publications, the editors have come up with some astonishing selections, and have added to them a slew of new material. Included are: Leslie Thomas's hilarious local newspaper story on little Davy Jones (Bowie's original name) and his campaign to defend "those who wear their hair long"; Patti Smith's poem/review of Heroes; Gordon Burn's backstage look at The Elephant Man; Wilfrid Mellers's musical analysis of Hunky Dory; Anne Rice on Bowie's ambiguous gender; Jon Savage on Bowie's relationship to the mainstream; a strange conversation between Bowie and William Burroughs; three acerbic reviews by the immortal Lester Bangs; contributions from Marc Bolan, Simon Frith, Pauline Kael, John Rockwell, and Ellen Willis, among others; a lengthy introduction, a select discography, and an extensive bibliography. Taken together, they make up a book that is a must for Bowie fans, and a perfect companion for anyone interested in the phenomenon of pop stardom.
