Study of the Norman World's borders, frontiers, and boundaries in Europe, shedding fresh light on their nature and extent. The Normans exerted great influence across Christendom and beyond in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Figures like William the Conqueror and Robert Guiscard subdued vast territories, their feats recorded for posterity by chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Geoffrey Malaterra. Through travel and conquest, the Normans encountered, created, and conceptualised many borders, with the areas of Europe that they ruled and most affected often being grouped together as the "Norman World". This volume examines the nature, forms, and function of borders in and around this "Norman World", looking at Normandy, the British-Irish Isles, and Southern Italy. Three sections frame the collection. The first concerns physical features, from broad frontier expanses, to rivers and walls that were both literally and metaphorically lines of division. The second shows how borders were established, contested, and negotiated between the papacy and lay rulers and senior churchmen. Finally, the third highlights the utility of conceptual frontiers for both medieval authors and modern historians. Among the subjects covered are Archbishop Anselm's travels across Christendom; the portrayal of borders in the writings of William of Jumièges, Orderic Vitalis, and Gerald of Wales; and the limits of Norman seigneurial and papal power at the edges of Europe. Overall, the essays demonstrate the role that the manipulation of borders played in the creation of the "Norman World", and address what these borders did and whom they benefited.

Beyond Evolutionary Psychology - How and Why Neuropsychological Modules Arise (Hardcover): George Ellis, Mark Solms Beyond Evolutionary Psychology - How and Why Neuropsychological Modules Arise (Hardcover)

The nature/nurture question is an age-old problem. Beyond Evolutionary Psychology deals with the relation between culture, evolution, psychology and emotion, based both in the underlying biology, determined by our evolutionary heritage, and in the interaction of our brain with the physical, ecological and social environment, based in the key property of brain plasticity. Ellis and Solms show how the brain structures that underlie cognition and behaviour relate to each other through developmental processes guided by primary emotional systems. This makes very clear which brain modules are innate or 'hard-wired', and which are 'soft-wired' or determined through environmental interactions. The key finding is that there can be no innate cognitive modules in the neocortex, as this is not possible on both developmental and genetic grounds; in particular there can be no innate language acquisition device. This is essential reading for students and scholars of evolutionary psychology and evolutionary biology.

Beecoming Sophie - A Bee Conscious Adventure (Paperback): Melissa Martin Ellis Beecoming Sophie - A Bee Conscious Adventure (Paperback)

PRAISE FOR BEECOMING SOPHIE: Sophie's story is utterly 'bee-coming" and is a delight to the eye as well as the mind. It is an effective way to introduce the plight of the bees as well as the well-known solutions to a youthful audience. I plan to donate my extra copy to the Henry Barnard School on the Rhode Island College campus as a tool for learning about the hives about to be installed. As one who teaches about diversity, I am appreciative of the natural and effective way that the author has for representing multicultural youth and some of the issues international adoptees face in American society. These complex issues are addressed through this lovely story about bees and the environment. The book makes a wonderful addition to your beekeeping library or a great gift to give to a special young person in your life. It is an excellent way to introduce them to the world of bees and their intimate connection to the well-being of our shared environment. --Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban, PhD, RI Beekeepers' Association Secretary, Professor Emerita of Anthropology Rhode Island College, author, educator Adopted teen Sophie Saffron has a secret--the bee that flew in her window one rainy evening is far more than she seems. She is Phoebee, the Queen of the Bees and she carries all the secrets of their ancient wisdom. She has an urgent message for Sophie, who adopts Phoebee and her mission. She must save the honeybees worldwide--before it is too late for them and all mankind. Sophie recruits her brother Rolando, and friend Sokuen to sting the community into bee-conscious action
