This dictionary contains the complete OHG lexis from the 8th
century (and from earlier sources) and presents the first part of a
planned chronological dictionary of German vocabulary. This is the
first work that can claim to give a complete account of German
words in Latin sources of this age and of borrowings into Latin.
The words are categorised first by word families (citing sources
with a chronological division into quarter-centuries and with a
regional classification), then by first occurrences, and finally by
NHG words with equivalents in the 8th century or earlier. This
chronological dictionary is of central importance for etymology and
lexical history, but also for philological and historical
enquiries.
Wussten Sie, was das Blasshuhn, jenen possierlichen schwarzen
aneinander.Nach Vogelfamilien sortiert, beginnt der Band mit den
Papageien und endet mit der grossen Familie der Enten. Zwei
Gedichte aus der deutschen Renaissance, eines davon vom Nurnberger
Meistersinger Hans Sachs, sowie ein ausfuhrliches Register
schliessen den Band ab."
In this chronological dictionary, the vocabulary of Old High German
is sorted by periods, regions and text-types; in addition,
vernacular insertions in Latin texts are registered as far as
possible. An evaluation section lists which Old High German words
appear in the 9th century at all, and which occur there for the
first time. This makes it possible for the vocabulary to be
examined and described systematically.

German language. The first edition was published in 1883, and since
