Juan is fifteen, sitting in a prison cell in Texas. He will be
executed soon-before his sixteenth birthday-for breaking the rules.
It's forbidden to break the rules. It's forbidden to write, too,
but Juan has paper at his disposal in his tiny cell. He wants to
write his story so that others can understand. He wants to explain
that he never really liked working for Adolf Hitler. "Juan of the
Third Reich" is a fictional look at what could have happened if
Hitler had won World War II. It is a recounting of one young
soldier's experience in the America that could have been if the
country had been overtaken by Nazis. In Juan's world, all serve
Emperor of the New Age, Hitler. Citizens are chosen for breeding,
while the rest of the world is not allowed to copulate. Citizens
aren't allowed to think anything outside of what Emperor Hitler
tells them-which is why Juan is to be executed. Ask yourself: what
if Hitler had won? What kind of world would we live in today? The
course of history would have changed forever, and Texas could
instead be known as the German Republic of Texas. "Juan of the
Third Reich" is the diary of a dead man, but it is also a warning.
If we the people become complacent to tyranny, in all its forms, we
will inevitably allow the savagery of our past to overtake us
again. And this time we may not have the will to defeat it.
