This new edition contains the texts and translations of two key
documents in medieval English history. The Dialogus de Scaccario,
or Dialogue of the Exchequer, written by Richard fitzNigel - an
insider at the court of Henry II (1154-89), has long formed the
basis of historical knowledge of royal finance in the later twelfth
century. It focuses on the annual audit of the sheriffs' accounts
that led to the writing of the documents known as the pipe rolls.
The Dialogus details the personnel and procedures of revenue
collection at a time of critical importance for English government,
administration, law, and economic development. It is a practical
handbook rather than a theoretical treatise, and it occupies a
unique place in English history.
Praise for the first edition: 'It is difficult to imagine another book in which one could find all this diverse material, and no doubt Amt's collection, in its richness, and in its genuine clarity and simplicity will takes prominent place in our expanded, diversified medieval curriculum, a curriculum that takes class, gender, and ethnicity as central to an understanding of world cultural history.' - The Medieval Review Long considered to be a definitive and truly groundbreaking collection of sources, Women s Lives in Medieval Europe uniquely presents the everyday lives and experiences of women in the Middle Ages. This indispensible text has now been thoroughly updated and expanded to reflect new research, and includes previously unavailable source material. This new edition includes expanded sections on marriage and sexuality, and on peasant women and townswomen, as well as a new section on women and the law. There are brief introductions both to the period and to the individual documents, study questions to accompany each reading, a glossary of terms and a fully updated bibliography. Working within a multi-cultural framework, the book focuses not just on the Christian majority, but also present material about women in minority groups in Europe, such as Jews, Muslims, and those considered to be heretics. Incorporating both the laws, regulations and religious texts that shaped the way women lived their lives, and personal narratives by and about medieval women, the book is unique in examining women s lives through the lens of daily activities, and in doing so as far as possible through the voices of women themselves."

Since the publication of the first edition of The Crusades: A Reader, interest in the Crusades has increased dramatically, fueled in part by current global interactions between the Muslim world and Western nations. The second edition features an intriguing new chapter on perceptions of the Crusades in the modern period, from David Hume and William Wordsworth to World War I political cartoons and crusading rhetoric circulating after 9/11. Islamic accounts of the treatment of prisoners have been added, as well as sources detailing the homecoming of those who had ventured to the Holy Land-including a newly translated reading on a woman crusader, Margaret of Beverly. The book contains sixteen images, study questions for each reading, and an index.

This popular primary source reader spans several centuries in over one hundred documents. In addition to constitutional highlights and standard texts such as the Magna Carta and Froissart's Chronicles, the editors include narrative sources on the lived experiences of an array of historical actors. All sources fit into thematic clusters on the Anglo-Saxon monarchy, lay piety, late medieval commercial life, queenship, and Jewish communities. The new edition begins in 500 CE with sources on the Gregorian mission and Viking invasions. Thirty new sources have been added, covering significant events such as the conquest of Wales and important themes and genres such as miracle collections, material culture, and archaeology. Introductions and thought-provoking questions situate each source in the historical landscape, paying attention to the circumstances of composition, the author's concerns, intended audience, and the conventions of the genre.
