Introducing innovative new research from international scholars working on Islamic fashion and its critics, Islamic Fashion and Anti-Fashion provides a global perspective on muslim dress practices. Nick and Pascal live and sleep outside in central London. They are an unusual duo: Nick is an avid reader of history and philosophy able to converse on any topic; Pascal is quiet, spending much of his time lying still, communicating silently with birds and animals. Collected from Hindu temples and Buddhist nunneries and salvaged by the strand from waste heaps and the combs of long-haired women, hair flows into the industry from many sources. Entering this strange world, Emma Tarlo tracks hair's movement across India, Myanmar, China, Africa, the United States, Britain and Europe, meeting people whose livelihoods depend on this singular commodity. of deep civil unrest in India . In 1975 Indira Gandhi declared a
state of emergency which gave her the power to silence opposition
through arrests and censorship and to introduce a new program of
reform which included the draconian campaigns of slum clearance and
family planning. In the capital city of Delhi access to basic civic
amenities became dependent on the production of a sterilization
certificate. For many of the city's poorest inhabitants whose homes
had been demolished, the choice was between sterilization or
homelessness.
