After a major invasion of the Gaza Strip in late 2008,
twenty-year-old Mahmoud Barghout decided to become a zookeeper. He
saw that the children around him were exhausted by war, and so to
provide respite, he set up the Happy Land Zoo. But the war made
feeding and caring for the animals impossible--they died of thirst,
hunger, or injury--and replacing them meant finding large sums of
money and overcoming the blockade or the risk of bringing them in
through tunnels connecting the Strip to Egypt. So Mr. Barghout came
up with a solution for at least one animal: he dyed two local white
donkeys with dark stripes, to create zebras, which visiting
children could touch and even ride.
"The Story of Hurry" recounts the tale of these "made in Gaza"
zebras, of an inventive zookeeper just like Mr. Barghout, and of
the wondrous capacity of the imagination of children. Written by
Emma Williams, together with thought-provoking mixed-media
illustrations by Ibrahim Quraishi, this picture book for
inquisitive children aged 3 to 103 includes an historical note for
parents, teachers, and librarians.

This book draws together advances in the understanding, assessment
and treatment of stress, negative symptoms, social anxiety, OCD,
PTSD and mood disturbance in people with a diagnosis of psychosis,
providing a practical guide for clinicians. CBT for psychosis draws
on the principles and interventions developed for anxiety and
depression and adapts these to treat psychotic symptoms. CBT for
schizophrenia is now widely accepted as an effective treatment in
the reduction of psychotic symptoms. A review of findings led the
National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to
recommend offering CBT to all people with schizophrenia. Content
includes: the role of stress in psychosis; negative symptoms -
emotional, motivational and behavioural deficits; social anxiety
disorder; obsessional compulsive disorder; post-traumatic stress
disorder; mood disturbance in psychosis; and client handouts. It
features: 174 pages, perfect bound (246 x 171mm).
This step-by-step manual presents a flexible, five-module
intervention programme to help clients with schizophrenia
understand their illness, recognise, monitor and cope with their
symptoms and reduce the impact of the illness on their lives. Using
a broadly psychoeducational approach, this book draws on recent
advances in the psychological understanding and management of
schizophrenia, such as cognitive-behavioural techniques, to enable
people with schizophrenia to cope with specific symptoms such as
auditory hallucinations. The detailed individual session guides
include session plans, handouts and education material. This book
also includes a full description of the range of available
assessment tools, their administration and interpretation. Such
assessments are useful in monitoring individual change and in
assessing treatment effectiveness. Aimed at mental health
professionals, including clinical psychologists, psychiatric
nurses, social workers and occupational therapists, the programme
can be used with individuals or small groups in a variety of
settings, such as secure hospitals, general psychiatric hospitals,
hostels, group homes, day centres and the client's own home. As
approximately one person in a hundred is likely to receive a
diagnosis of schizophrenia in their lifetime, this practical
photocopiable manual is a valuable resource for anyone working with
this client group.
