Paul Tillich first presented his lecture series "Advanced Problems
of Systematic Theology" between 1936 and 1938 at the Union
Theological Seminary in New York and later repeated it in different
variations on several occasions. We can regard these lectures as
the "original version" of his "systematic theology" of 1951-1963,
from which it differs in multiple respects.
der Universitat Frankfurt a. M. gewesen war, in New York seine
akademische Lehrtatigkeit aufnehmen.
Columbia University New York und an der Yale University New Haven
Vorlesungsmanuskripte Tillichs zugrundegelegt. Sie wurden vom
Herausgeber aus dem Englischen ins Deutsche ubersetzt.
This volume presents a critical edition of Paul Tillich's so far
unpublished first lectures at the Theological Faculty of Berlin: 1.
Christianity and the problems of contemporary society (1919), 2.
Encyclopedia of Theology and Religious Studies (1920), 3. Religion
and Culture (1920), 4. Philosophy of Religion (1920). These
manuscripts, archived at Harvard University, represent a
differentiated document of Paul Tillich's cultural-theological
reflections and those related to the philosophy of religion during
the first years of the Weimar Republic.
This volume contains the previously unpublished manuscripts of the
lectures Philosophy of History and Social Pedagogy which the
theologian and philosopher Paul Tillich delivered at the University
of Frankfurt am Main in the Winter Semester 1929/30 in his capacity
as Professor of Philosophy and Sociology, together with a record of
the lecture Philosophy of History. In both lectures, Tillich
develops a philosophy of encounter. With this, he reveals a new
relationship of time and history, and also of the I-You
relationship and of education.
Geschichtsdeutung"). Die Lehre von der Vollendung ("theologische
Sinndeutung") ist nicht mehr ausgefuhrt. Die Edition ist eine
vollstandige Neubearbeitung des von Werner Schussler 1986
herausgegebenen Textes.
This edition is the first to publish three lectures which the
philosopher and theologian Paul Tillich, who emigrated to the USA
in 1933, delivered during a Guest Professorship at the Free
University of Berlin between 1951 and 1958. The three lectures are
entitled a oeOntologya (1951), a oeThe Human Situation in the Light
of Theology and Existential Analysisa (1952), a oeThe Ambivalence
of Life Processesa (1958). Their common theme is the Doctrine of
Man, which is developed from various perspectives.
Relatively little has previously been known about Paul Tillich s
teaching activities as Professor of Philosophy and Sociology at the
University of Frankfurt (1929 1933). This volume of the new edition
of Tillich s Collected Works includes texts drawn from Tillich s
legacy, including the following lectures he gave between 1930 and
the beginning of 1933: 1. Philosophy of religion; 2. The evolution
of philosophy from late antiquity until the Renaissance; 3.
Classical philosophy; 4. The history of philosophical ethics; and
5. Fundamental questions in systematic philosophy. In these
lectures, Tillich inquires about life s aporia, and reflects
philosophically about their implications."
