Atheistic Platonism is an alternative to both theism and nihilistic
atheism. It shows how any jobs allegedly done by God are better
done by impersonal Platonic objects. Without Platonic objects,
atheism degenerates into an illogical nihilism. Atheistic Platonism
instead provides reality with foundations that are eternal,
necessary, rational, beautiful, and utterly mindless. It argues for
a plenitude of mathematical objects, and an infinite plurality of
possible universes. It provides mindless rational grounds for
objective values, and for objective moral laws for the persons who
evolve in universes. It defines a meaningful way of life, which
facilitates self-improvement. Atheistic Platonists argue for
computational theories of life after death. Atheistic Platonism
includes a rich system of spiritual symbols. It values
transformational practices and ecstatic experiences. Where atheisms
based on materialism fail, atheisms based on Platonism succeed.
This volume brings to the attention of contemporary readers a
tradition of psychological thought that has received little
attention over the last century. Psychology's history has been
unimaginatively presented as a fight between behaviorists and
mentalists. A third alternative, the New Realism, which cuts
through that dichotomy, has been lost. "The New Realism" was indeed
once new. This volume provides a glimpse of how this school of
thought attempted to redefine the notion of mental processes,
including consciousness, in psychological theorizing. Holt's
rejected the nativity of iconoclastic Watsonian behaviorists, and
thus the New Realism was thoughtful in ways that behaviorist social
engineering was not. The implications of these innovations in
psychological theorizing are traced from the beginning of the
twentieth century to the contemporary period. The contributors
provide these intellectual links, along with efforts to look at the
relatedness of the human organism and its world. At their
beginning, these ideas are embedded in a reverence for William
James's work, particularly his later Radical Empiricism. In
contemporary psychology, this legacy has given us the framework of
ecological psychology as we know it today, and provides the basis
for several modern critiques of cognitive psychology. The present
volume opens the door for future historical inquiries. This is an
exemplary addition to the series on the History of Psychological
Ideas.

A Captain's Journal is a personal account of events from Balad Air
Force Base Hospital in Iraq during a six month period from 2006 -
2007. The stories are told from the personal perspective of Eric
Charles, an Anesthesiologist. Eric recounts his patient encounters
that range from pleasant to gut-wrenching and from laughable to
tear-jerking. The descriptions of the events are occasionally
graphic, but strike a realistic chord. Eric also weaves into the
narrative many personal and philospohical interactions from the
every day events of living in the midst of the Iraq War.

In 2007, a survey - the first of its kind - was carried out to
gauge young people's awareness of and attitudes towards ASEAN,
follow the decision by ASEAN heads of state and government to
accelerate the date for accomplishing an integrated ASEAN Community
by 2015. Views and attitudes from university undergraduates in the
ten ASEAN member states who participated in the survey indicated a
nascent sense of identification as citizens of the region as well
as their priorities for important aspects of regional integration.
An update to the 2007 survey was carried out in 2014-2015 amoung
the same target population but with an expanded scope of twenty-two
universities and institutes of higher learning across the ten
member states. In the updated survey, we found that there are more
ASEAN-positive attitudes region-wide, but there are also increases
in ASEAN ambivalent attitudes at country-level in some ASEAN
members. Young people's priorities for important aspects of
regional integration have also shifted away from economic
cooperation to tourism and development cooperation. New questions
in the latest survey also allows us to demonstrate the descriptive
vocabulary and cognitive maps students hold for the region and its
nations. This book details the key findings of the updated survey
compared to the earlier survey. These include nation-by-nation
results and a summary of region-wide trends, as well as what they
suggest for the prospects of ASEAN integration beyond 2015. These
are assessed in a chapter providing broad recommendations for
policymakers and educators in the ASEAN member states.
