Culturing Wilderness in Jasper National Park - Studies in Two Centuries of Human History in the Upper Athabasca River Watershed... Culturing Wilderness in Jasper National Park - Studies in Two Centuries of Human History in the Upper Athabasca River Watershed (Paperback)
I.S. MacLaren, Michael Payne, Peter J. Murphy, Pearlann Reichwein, Lisa McDermott, …
R1,072 Discovery Miles 10 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Adults need playgrounds. In 1907, the Canadian government designated a vast section of the Rocky Mountains as Jasper Forest Park. Tourists now play where Native peoples once lived, fur traders toiled, and Metis families homesteaded. In Culturing Wilderness in Jasper National Park, I.S. MacLaren and eight other writers unearth the largely unrecorded past of the upper Athabasca River watershed, and bring to light two centuries' worth of human history, tracing the evolution of trading routes into the Rockies' largest park. Serious history enthusiasts and those with an interest in Canada's national parks will find a sense of connection in this long overdue study of Jasper.

Technology and the Good Life? (Paperback): Eric Higgs Technology and the Good Life? (Paperback)
Eric Higgs
R1,263 Discovery Miles 12 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Can we use technology in the pursuit of a good life, or are we doomed to having our lives organized and our priorities set by the demands of machines and systems? How can philosophy help us to make technology a servant rather than a master?
"Technology and the Good Life?" uses a careful collective analysis of Albert Borgmann's controversial and influential ideas as a jumping-off point from which to address questions such as these about the role and significance of technology in our lives. Contributors both sympathetic and critical examine Borgmann's work, especially his "device paradigm"; apply his theories to new areas such as film, agriculture, design, and ecological restoration; and consider the place of his thought within philosophy and technology studies more generally.
Because this collection carefully investigates the issues at the heart of how we can take charge of life with technology, it will be a landmark work not just for philosophers of technology but for students and scholars in the many disciplines concerned with science and technology studies.

When it comes to implementing successful ecological restoration projects, the social, political, economic, and cultural dimensions are often as important as-and sometimes more important than-technical or biophysical knowledge.

"Human Dimensions of Ecological Restoration" takes an interdisciplinary look at the myriad human aspects of ecological restoration. In twenty-six chapters written by experts from around the world, it provides practical and theoretical information, analysis, models, and guidelines for optimizing human involvement in restoration projects. Six categories of social activities are examined:

-collaboration between land manager and stakeholders
-ecological economics
-volunteerism and community-based restoration
-environmental education
-ecocultural and artistic practices
-policy and politics

For each category, the book offers an introductory theoretical chapter followed by multiple case studies, each of which focuses on a particular aspect of the category and provides a perspective from within a unique social/political/cultural setting.

"Human Dimensions of Ecological Restoration" delves into the often-neglected aspects of ecological restoration that ultimately make the difference between projects that are successfully executed and maintained with the support of informed, engaged citizens, and those that are unable to advance past the conceptual stage due to misunderstandings or apathy. The lessons contained will be valuable to restoration veterans and greenhorns alike, scholars and students in a range of fields, and individuals who care about restoring their local lands and waters.

Honor Thy Mother, FIND Thy Father (Paperback): Eric Higgs, Christopher Scott Honor Thy Mother, FIND Thy Father (Paperback)
Eric Higgs, Christopher Scott
R371 Discovery Miles 3 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a story that is rooted in the bible verse "Honor thy mother & thy father", but in our case we had to find him first. This is the story of me (Eric) and my brother (Chris) who I didn't know was my brother. This story started with each of us going on a "Mecca" in our lives, to find a missing common element - our father - who we chose to lose, because he lost us first. This is a story that is rooted in faith, trust, forgiveness, and possibilities, with faith being the most important, because sometimes you have to trust that feeling in your gut and step out there and follow it. Our lives have been forever changed, and changed for the greater.

Nature by Design - People, Natural Process and Ecological Restoration (Paperback): Eric Higgs Nature by Design - People, Natural Process and Ecological Restoration (Paperback)
Eric Higgs
R1,581 Discovery Miles 15 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ecological restoration is the process of repairing human damage to ecosystems. It involves reintroducing missing plants and animals, rebuilding soils, eliminating hazardous substances, ripping up roads, and returning natural processes such as fire and flooding to places that thrive on their regular occurrence. Thousands of restoration projects take place in North America every year. In Nature by Design, Eric Higgs argues that profound philosophical and cultural shifts accompany these projects. He explores the ethical and philosophical bases of restoration and the question of what constitutes good ecological restoration.Higgs explains how and why the restoration movement came about, where it fits into the array of approaches to human relationships with the land, and how it might be used to secure a sustainable future. Some environmental philosophers and activists worry that restoration will dilute preservation and conservation efforts and lead to an even deeper technological attitude toward nature. They ask whether even well-conceived restoration projects are in fact just expressions of human will. Higgs prefaces his responses to such concerns by distinguishing among several types of ecological restoration. He also describes a growing gulf between professionals and amateurs. Higgs finds much merit in criticism about technological restoration projects, which can cause more damage than they undo. These projects often ignore the fact that changing one thing in a complex system can change the whole system. For restoration projects to be successful, Higgs argues, people at the community level must be engaged. These focal restorations bring communities together, helping volunteers develop a dedication to place and encouraging democracy.

Restoring the Pacific Northwest - The Art and Science of Ecological Restoration in Cascadia (Paperback): Dean Apostol, Marcia... Restoring the Pacific Northwest - The Art and Science of Ecological Restoration in Cascadia (Paperback)
Dean Apostol, Marcia Sinclair; Foreword by Eric Higgs
R1,270 Discovery Miles 12 700 Out of stock

The Pacific Northwest is a global ecological "hotspot" because of its relatively healthy native ecosystems, a high degree of biodiversity, and the number and scope of restoration initiatives that have been undertaken there. "Restoring the Pacific Northwest" gathers and presents the best examples of state-of-the-art restoration techniques and projects. It is an encyclopaedic overview that will be an invaluable reference, not just for restorationists and students working in the Pacific Northwest, but for practitioners across North America and around the world.

Mapper of Mountains - M.P. Bridgland in the Canadian Rockies, 1902-1930 (Paperback): I.S. MacLaren Mapper of Mountains - M.P. Bridgland in the Canadian Rockies, 1902-1930 (Paperback)

Mapper of Mountains follows the career of Dominion Land Surveyor Morrison Parsons Bridgland, who provided the first detailed maps of many regions of the Canadian Rockies. Between 1902 and 1930, this unheralded alpinist perfected phototopographical techniques to compile a series of mountaintop photographs during summers of field work, and spent his winters collating them to provide the Canadian government and tourists and mountain climbers with accurate topographical maps. Bridgland was also a great climber and co-founder of the Alpine Club of Canada. Mapper of Mountains tells the story of the Rocky Mountain Repeat Photography Project, which studies the changes sustained in the Rockies, repeating the field work accomplished by Bridgland almost a century ago.
