The Boundaries of Mixedness - A Global Perspective: Erica Chito Childs The Boundaries of Mixedness - A Global Perspective
Erica Chito Childs
R1,234 Discovery Miles 12 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Boundaries of Mixedness tackles the burgeoning field of critical mixed race studies, bringing together research that spans five continents and more than ten countries. Research on mixedness is growing, yet there is still much debate over what exactly mixed race means, and whether it is a useful term. Despite a growing focus on and celebration of mixedness globally, particularly in the media, societies around the world are grappling with how and why crossing socially constructed boundaries of race, ethnicity and other markers of difference matter when considering those who date, marry, raise families, or navigate their identities across these boundaries. What we find collectively through the ten studies in this book is that in every context there is a hierarchy of mixedness, both in terms of intimacy and identity. This hierarchy of intimacy renders certain groups as more or less marriable, socially constructed around race, ethnicity, caste, religion, skin color and/or region. Relatedly, there is also a hierarchy of identities where certain races, languages, ethnicities and religions are privileged and valued differently. These differences emerge out of particular local histories and contemporary contexts yet there are also global realities that transcend place and space. The Boundaries of Mixedness is a significant new contribution to mixed race studies for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Ethnic and Racial Studies, Sociology, History and Public Policy. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Intercultural Studies.

Fade to Black and White - Interracial Images in Popular Culture (Hardcover, New): Erica Chito Childs Fade to Black and White - Interracial Images in Popular Culture (Hardcover, New)
Erica Chito Childs
R2,689 Discovery Miles 26 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is no teasing apart what interracial couples think of themselves from what society shows them about themselves. Following on her earlier ground-breaking study of the social worlds of interracial couples, Erica Chito Childs considers the larger context of social messages, conveyed by the media, that inform how we think about love across the color line. Examining a range of media, from movies to music to the web, Fade to Black and White offers an informative and provocative account of how the perception of interracial sexuality as 'deviant' has been transformed in the course of the 20th century and how race relations are understood today.

African Americans and Whites - Changing Relationships on College Campuses (Paperback): Robert M. Moore African Americans and Whites - Changing Relationships on College Campuses (Paperback)
Robert M. Moore; Contributions by Larry J. Griffin, Andrea Malkin Brenner, Wanda Rushing, Zandria Robinson, …
R1,217 Discovery Miles 12 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Including the work of nearly 20 authors from institutions such as American University, Memphis University, University of North Carolina, and Georgia State University, this essay collection explores the changing relationship between African Americans and whites on U.S. College and University campuses. These essays investigate and chronicle the tension and social distance felt between African Americans and whites in today's higher-education community. Many facets of the educational experience are examined including student-to-student contact, affinity group formation, Greek life, and the perceived effectiveness of courses on race taught by non-minorities. Although designed as supplemental reading for undergraduate and graduate students, and experts in the field, each chapter in African Americans and Whites includes three or four provocative questions suitable for classroom discussions.

Navigating Interracial Borders - Black-white Couples and Their Social Worlds (Paperback, New): Erica Chito Childs Navigating Interracial Borders - Black-white Couples and Their Social Worlds (Paperback, New)

"One of the best books written about interracial relationships to date. . . . Childs offers a sophisticated and insightful analysis of the social and ideological context of black-white interracial relationships." --Heather Dalmage, author of Tripping on the Color Line "A pioneering project that thoroughly analyzes interracial marriage in contemporary America." --Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, author of Racism without Racists: Color-Blind Racism and The Persistence of Racial Inequality in the United States Is love color-blind, or at least becoming increasingly so? Today's popular rhetoric and evidence of more interracial couples than ever might suggest that it is. But is it the idea of racially mixed relationships that we are growing to accept or is it the reality? What is the actual experience of individuals in these partnerships as they navigate their way through public spheres and intermingle in small, close-knit communities? In Navigating Interracial Borders, Erica Chito Childs explores the social world of black-white interracial couples and examines the ways that collective attitudes shape private relationships. Drawing on personal accounts, in-depth interviews, focus group responses, and cultural analysis of media sources, she provides compelling evidence that sizable opposition still exists toward black-white unions. Disapproval is merely being expressed in more subtle, color-blind terms. Childs reveals that frequently the same individuals who attest in surveys that they approve of interracial dating will also list various reasons why they and their families wouldn't, shouldn't, and couldn't marry someone of another race. Even college students, who are heralded as racially tolerant and open-minded, do not view interracial couples as acceptable when those partnerships move beyond the point of casual dating. Popular films, Internet images, and pornography also continue to reinforce the idea that sexual relations between blacks and whites are deviant. Well-researched, candidly written, and enriched with personal narratives, Navigating Interracial Boundaries offers important new insights into the still fraught racial hierarchies of contemporary society in the United States. Erica Chito Childs is an assistant professor of sociology at Eastern Connecticut State University.
