Ernest Gellner made major contributions in very diverse fields, notably philosophy and social anthropology. His attacks on the orthodoxies of his time made it difficult for him to be fully accepted into either of these academic communities, but that suited him well enough: he seemed to enjoy leading a one-man crusade for critical rationalism, defending enlightenment universalism against the rising tides of idealism and relativism. His influence spread far beyond social anthropology: the fierce tone of the polemics of the 1950s against Oxford philosophers was repeated during the 1990s in tangles in the TLS with the literary critic Edward Said. For Gellner the issues were essentially the same: the vital need to refute the claim that ideas lead the world.

Ernest Gellner
R5,339 Discovery Miles 53 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gellner's political philosophy in these volumes combines the down-to-earth realism of political sociology with a rational treatment of the normative issues of traditional political thought. In these essays Gellner strives to understand the religions of nationalism, communism and democracy, returning again and again to the basic values of the liberal: social tolerance, rational criticism, human decency and justice.

The essays in this volume gather together Gellner's thinking on the connection between philosophy and life and they approach the topic from a number of directions: philosophy of morals, history of ideas, a discussion of individuals including R. G. Collingwood, Noam Chomsky, Piaget and Eysenck and discussions on the setting of philosophy in the general culture of England and America.

Postmodernism, Reason and Religion (Hardcover): Ernest Gellner Postmodernism, Reason and Religion (Hardcover)
Ernest Gellner
R5,312 Discovery Miles 53 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First Published in 1992. On questions of faith, Ernest Gellner believes, three ideological options are available to us today. One is the return to a genuine and firm faith in a religious tradition. The other is a form of relativism which abandons the notion of unique truth altogether and resigns itself to treating truth as relative to the society or culture in question. The third, which Gellner calls enlightenment rationalism, upholds the idea that there is a unique truth, but denies that any society can ever possess it definitively. Learned and stimulating, Professor Gellner's book is an important contribution to our understanding of postmodernism and the relations between Islam and the West. It will be of great interest to anyone concerned with the ideological condition of contemporary society.

Bertrand Russell; Introduction by Ian Jarvie; Ernest Gellner
R3,079 Discovery Miles 30 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Finding a powerful ally in Bertrand Russell, who provided the foreword for this book, Gellner embarked on the project that was to put him on the intellectual map. The first determined attempt to state the premises and operational rules of the movement, Words and Things remains philosophy's most devastating attack on a conventional wisdom to this day.

Ernest Gellner
R4,318 Discovery Miles 43 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems- both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.

Finding a powerful ally in Bertrand Russell, who provided the foreword for this book, Gellner embarked on the project that was to put him on the intellectual map. "Words and Things" was the first determined attempt to state the premises and operational rules of the movement. The basic charge was that Linguistic Philosophy was an aberrant, trivializing perversion of good philosophical practice, substituting, in place of honest theorizing and argument, pedantic scrutiny of intrinsically uninteresting detail. When this now-famous critique originally appeared in 1959, it created a scandal, causing a flurry of correspondence in the Times. "Words and Things" remains the most devastating attack on a conventional wisdom in philosophy to this day.

Liberalism in Modern Times - Essays in Honour of Jose G.Merquior (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Ernest Gellner, Cesar Cansino Liberalism in Modern Times - Essays in Honour of Jose G.Merquior (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Ernest Gellner, Cesar Cansino
R2,024 Discovery Miles 20 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The premature death in 1991 of the Brazilian essayist, thinker and diplomat Jose G. Merquior robbed the international intellectual community of a gifted 'friend of reason and a defender of liberty'. Several essays in this volume, directly or indirectly, broadly or personally, pay tribute to the life and work of this 'politically engaged intellectual'. Part I examines Merquiorian thought itself and - aptly enough - begins with Merquior's own incisive review of the rebirth of the liberal idea and recommitment to democracy itself. Part II ranges more widely: here, such distinguished contributors as John Hall, Ernest Gellner and Noberto Bobbio develop some of Merquior's favourite themes - liberalism as it relates to social cohesion, political stability, morality, republicanism and democracy, and the relativism and scepticism that characterize postmodern thinking. The book's application to two regions of the world is direct and obvious: to Merquior's own Latin America and to Central and Eastern Europe, where rapid political change and economic transition have brought debates on liberalism to the forefront. But in Merquior's thought there are also lessons for Western Europe and the United States, where the very familiarity of the liberal tradition can lead to a certain sterility of ideas. These various perspectives in liberal political thought are brilliantly drawn out by Ernest Gellner in the Preface - one of the last pieces he wrote before his death in November 1995.

Nations and Nationalism (Paperback, 2nd New edition): Ernest Gellner Nations and Nationalism (Paperback, 2nd New edition)
Ernest Gellner; Introduction by John Breuilly
R976 Discovery Miles 9 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From reviews of the first edition:

"Brilliant, provocative . . . a great book." New Statesman

"An important book . . . It is a new starting line from which all subsequent discussions of nationalism will have to begin." New Society

"A better explanation than anyone has yet offered of why nationalism is such a prominent principle of political legitimacy today. This is a terse and forceful work . . . the product of great intellectual energy and an impressive range of knowledge." Times Literary Supplement

"Periodically, an important book emerges that makes us, through the uniqueness of its theory, perceive history as we have not seen it before. Ernest Gellner has written such a volume. Students of nationalism will have to come to grips with his interpretation of the causes for the emergence of nationalism, since he has declared that most of the previous explanations are largely mythical." American Historical Review

First published in 1983, Nations and Nationalism remains one of the most influential explanations of the emergence of nationalism ever written. This updated edition of Ernest Gellner's now-canonical work includes a new introductory essay from John Breuilly, tracing the way the field has evolved over the past two decades, and a bibliography of important work on nationalism since 1983."

Mapping the Nation (Paperback, New Edition): Gopal Balakrishnan Mapping the Nation (Paperback, New Edition)
Gopal Balakrishnan; Introduction by Benedict Anderson; Contributions by Lord Acton, Otto Bauer, John Breuilly, …
R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In nearly two decades since Samuel P. Huntington proposed his influential and troubling 'clash of civilizations' thesis, nationalism has only continued to puzzle and frustrate commentators, policy analysts and political theorists. No consensus exists concerning its identity, genesis or future. Are we reverting to the petty nationalisms of the nineteenth century or evolving into a globalized, supranational world? Has the nation-state outlived its usefulness and exhausted its progressive and emancipatory role? Opening with powerful statements by Lord Acton and Otto Bauer - the classic liberal and socialist positions, respectively - Mapping the Nation presents a wealth of thought on this issue: the debate between Ernest Gellner and Miroslav Hroch; Gopal Balakrishnan's critique of Benedict Anderson's seminal Imagined Communities; Partha Chatterjee on the limitations of the Enlightenment approach to nationhood; and contributions from Michael Mann, Eric Hobsbawm, Tom Nairn, and Jurgen Habermas.

Nomads and the Outside World (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Anatoly M. Khazanov Nomads and the Outside World (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Anatoly M. Khazanov; Translated by Julia Crookenden; Foreword by Ernest Gellner
R801 Discovery Miles 8 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hailed by reviewers as "majestic and magisterial," Nomads and the Outside World was first published in English in 1984. With the author's new introduction and an updated bibliography, this classic is now available in an edition accessible to students.

From reviews of the first edition:

"Magisterial. . . . Combining a phenomenal erudition, a candid judgment, and a subtle sense of irony, Khazanov sets out to challenge the orthodox view of nomadic feudalism and, in the process, has produced the first comparative survey of pastoral societies that can claim to be truly comprehensive, covering their history in Eurasia, the Middle East, and Africa from the origins of pastoralism to the dawn of the modern era."--Tim Ingold, "Current Anthropology"

"This is the best study on pastoral nomadism that the reviewer has ever read. At last we have a major attempt to present the whole phenomenon in historical, ecological, spatial and structural perspective. . . . Superb scholarship. It is the kind of work that can only be produced as a result of years of specific research, much deep thinking . . . and a determination to reject cant."--John C. Wilkinson, "Geographical Journal"

"Khazanov's book on pastoral nomadism is a heroic endeavor of a kind no one has seriously attempted before. . . . Particularly valuable to western readers are the materials on the numerous peoples of Central Asia and Siberia . . . and their integration with analysis of more familiar societies such as those of North and East Africa and the Middle East. . . . The insights provided by this book are too numerous to list."--Caroline Humphrey, "Times Literary Supplement"

Spectacles and Predicaments - Essays in Social Theory (Paperback, Revised): Ernest Gellner Spectacles and Predicaments - Essays in Social Theory (Paperback, Revised)
Ernest Gellner
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of essays is concerned with philosophy, politics and society. The first group examines what philosophers such as Hegel, Wittgenstein and Chomsky have said or implied about the nature of society in general. A second group examines the cognitive predicament, questions concerning the nature of the possibility of knowledge, as handled by a thinker such as Descartes, or the Pragmatist tradition. The third group handles the political predicament and deals specifically with problems such as nationalism, the nature of the liberalisation process, the future of the welfare and consumer state and the option facing underdeveloped societies. The essays deal not only with classical theories concerning these problems but also with various recent discussions. The volume will interest many individual philosophers and social theorists and those with a more general interest in our culture and political discussions.

Culture, Identity, and Politics (Paperback): Ernest Gellner Culture, Identity, and Politics (Paperback)
Ernest Gellner
R1,128 Discovery Miles 11 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

These essays explore the relationship between culture and politics in the modern world. They range in space from Iran to Algeria, and the eastern marchlands of Europe to the Atlantic, and in time over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. But they are all inspired by a cluster of linked preoccupations with the nature of the social order now emerging in the world and the kinds of moral and political legitimation it requires and permits. The essays are also linked by Ernest Gellner's distinctive, and highly arresting, intellectual temper and style. The volume will interest a wide range of readers in the social sciences and philosophy.

Relativism and the Social Sciences (Paperback, New Ed): Ernest Gellner Relativism and the Social Sciences (Paperback, New Ed)
Ernest Gellner
R1,264 Discovery Miles 12 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Considers human diversity and change and rejects the usual solutions to problems of relativism. Presents a new mode of inquiry in its stead a mixture of philosophy, history, and anthropology that appears to be more meaningful.

Muslim Society (Paperback, New ed): Ernest Gellner Muslim Society (Paperback, New ed)
Ernest Gellner
R871 Discovery Miles 8 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why contemporary Islam is able to support austerely traditional and conservative regimes as well as revolutionary ones is the subject of this collection of essays. Professor Gellner's position is supported by a series of case studies and critical evaluations of rival interpretations.
